The holy Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated in Bangladesh on June 7 (Saturday) as the crescent moon of the Zilhaj month of 1446 Hijri was sighted in Bangladesh's sky on Wednesday evening.

The decision was taken at a National Moon Sighting Committee meeting at the Islamic Foundation's (IF) conference room at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the city this evening.

National Moon Sighting Committee and Religious Adviser AFM Khalid Hossain chaired the meeting, it said.

The Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated on the 10th day of Zilhajj month of the Hijri calendar as Hazrat Ibrahim (AS), on this day, some 4,500 years ago, offered to sacrifice his beloved son Hazrat Ismail (AS), who willingly submitted to the will of his father to please Almighty Allah.

But the Almighty Allah in His benign mercy spared Hazrat Ismail (AS) and instead sent a ram to be sacrificed.

BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today extended his greetings and congratulations to the countrymen ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha and urged everyone to share the joy of Eid.

In a message, he also wished the Muslims all over the world including Bangladesh for continued happiness and comfort, UNB reports.

"Eid-ul-Azha means the festival of sacrifice. The main theme of this festival is sacrifice. It is said in the holy book, the Al-Quran, neither meat nor blood reaches Allah, but the pure desire of your heart reaches."

He added: "The pure desire of people around the world is to get close to Allah. People sacrifice animals to get close to Allah. The holy Eid-ul-Azha returns every year with a great message of self-purification, self-satisfaction and self-sacrifice".

"Despite the impact of rising commodity prices, social injustice and various crises, the hearts of the country's Muslim population are filled with the enormous joy and excitement of Eid. The people of the country have gone through a difficult period of fascism for a decade and a half. After the fall of the fascist clique on August 5 last year, people will celebrate Eid-ul-Azha in a somewhat relaxed atmosphere in the country," said Tarique Rahman.

"During the fascist period, due to the illegal power and greed of the evil forces of obedience, the state and society suffered a final decline in ethics, morality, religious and social values. Now, all of us must work together to reflect the will of the people everywhere to eliminate mountain-like inequality in the current changed situation. So that terrible situations like reckless looting, corruption and money laundering do not repeat," he said.

He said animal sacrifice is a means of purification and purity. Sacrifice has been made essential for the Muslims in line with the tradition of testing patience and faith, he said, adding that the spirit of sacrifice of Eid-ul-Azha creates unity, solidarity and harmony in the society.

"If we reflect the main lesson of sacrifice in our lives and strive for human welfare, then we will surely be able to gain the satisfaction and closeness of the Almighty Allah, the Most Gracious. Believers must be dedicated to that effort," he said.

The acting chairman of BNP said Eid-ul-Azha is the second of the two biggest religious festivals of the Muslims in the world.

"The festival is universal. The festival inspires people to be kind to each other," he said.

In the current economic situation, he said, it will be difficult for everyone to enjoy the joy of Eid properly.

"The intensity of inflation, the abnormal increase in the prices of food items, the acute crisis of water, gas and electricity in households have plunged people into boundless misery. Low-income people are living in suffocating conditions. We all have to take care that no one goes hungry on the joyous day of Eid. Everyone has to share the joy of Eid in one row," he said.

He wished Eid-ul-Azha would bring happiness, peace, prosperity in everyone's lives and may harmony and camaraderie be created in the society.

Celebrating Eid-ul-Azha in its true spirit

Eid-ul-Azha, the second of the two great festivals of the Muslim Ummah, is primarily a festival of sacrifice. But this festival assumes a unique spiritual significance with the performance of hajj scheduled for the 10th day of the twelfth and final month of Dhu al-Hijja on the Islamic calendar. Hajj performed in Makkah is mandatory for all the devout Muslims who are physically, mentally and financially capable of doing so. Sacrifice of animal is integral to the performance of Hajj. Although the celebration is slated for the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijja, it is carried forward to the following three days. However, the difference of time by a day or two in moon sighting from different locations on the planet, which is the basis of lunar months, actually sets the dates for celebrations of both Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha. This is what actually explains celebration of the two great festivals on different dates.

Now, all great festivals are generally marked by mammoth congregations. Hajj is certainly one such congregation. Even the prayer offered to the Almighty Allah brings together thousands and, in some select Eidgahs of Bangladesh, tens of thousands of followers of Islam. If Eid-ul-Fitr is preceded by the practice of a month-long siam or self-abnegation, Eid-ul-Azha transcends this lesson to yet another humanitarian and spiritual cause. The core theme ingrained in these two religious obligations is of course unreserved and total submission to Allah, the benevolent. This sacrificial ritual is incorporated into Islam from the unrivalled example of prophet Ibrahim's willingness to make the supreme sacrifice. At the command of Allah the merciful, Prophet Ibrahim was about to slaughter his son Ismail as a complete surrender to the supreme being's will. It was, however, the ultimate test not only the prophet but also his son were put to by the Almighty. Both came out of the test in flying colours as they responded unhesitatingly to the call of duty to Allah.

In today's mundane world, no one is asked to sacrifice his son. Then where does lie the significance of the sacrifice? It is in the purity of mind that remains steadfast against all distractions and seductions. One has to offer to Allah what one holds dearest to his bosom. This also is a lesson in renunciation for the sake of complete surrender to the creator. Through this, man seeks a union with the omnipotent being. To do so one has to come clean on any mundane consideration like prophet Ibrahim and prove total submission to God's will.

Sadly, the spirit is woefully missing now. Most people are more eager for the feast than going by the religious edict. When it comes to sacrifice of animals, some take it as an opportunity for flaunting wealth by way of procuring the prized bull or ox for slaughter. Theirs is no sacrifice and it is not accepted by Allah. Apart from this clear religious message, Eid-ul-Azha's socio-economic implications are also very significant. Through sharing and distributing sacrificial meat with relatives and among the poor, the well-to-do in society can also perform a duty towards society. The money spent on the sacrificial animal also contributes to the economy by way of fostering cattle rearing by poor farmers and developing cattle farms in both rural and peri-urban areas.

The National Eidgah in Dhaka is all set to host the main Eid-ul-Azha congregation, with the preparation to accommodate around 35,000 worshippers.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Shahjahan Mia said the main congregation will be held at 7:30am on Saturday at the National Eidgah grounds on the Supreme Court premises.

In case of adverse weather, Baitul Mukarram National Mosque will be used as an alternative venue, where the main congregation will be start at 8:00am, reports bdnews24.com.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the preparations at the National Eidgah on Thursday, Shahjahan Mia said: “All arrangements for the Eid prayers have been completed. Since it’s the rainy season, we have prepared with the weather in mind to ensure no disruption.”

“To protect worshippers from rain, tarpaulins have been installed above the tents. The drainage system here is excellent, so there is no risk of waterlogging. Worshippers will be able to pray peacefully.”

Highlighting the importance of the site, he said: “As you know, the president, the chief advisor, the chief justice, judges of the Supreme Court and High Court, cabinet secretary, and other high-ranking officials, come here to offer Eid prayers alongside the general public. We’ve made arrangements keeping everyone’s comfort in mind.”

GUIDELINES FOR WORSHIPPERS

The DSCC administrator urged attendees not to bring any items that could be considered a security threat.

“We strongly request that worshippers do not bring any devices or items that could pose a security concern. You can come and pray without worry,” he said.

“There’s no need to bring your own prayer mats or water bottles either.”

Four gates have been designated for general entry, while women have a separate prayer area with separate entry and exit gates. A special gate through the Supreme Court compound will be used for VVIPs.

Members of the Special Security Force (SSF) and the Bangladesh Army began taking up positions at the site on Thursday to ensure VVIP security.

Control rooms from the DSCC, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, RAB, and a first aid centre have been set up. A team from the Fire Service will also be on standby.

“Police, RAB, and other security agencies are on full alert. There will be no compromise on safety,” said Shahjahan.

“We have made preparations for nearly 35,000 people to perform Eid prayers at the Eidgah. The VVIP gallery alone can accommodate around 250 people.”

The main gate of the Eidgah features an arch inscribed with the message: “May this Eid-ul-Azha be illuminated by the spirit of sacrifice, self-improvement, and compassion. Eid Mubarak.”

Ablution facilities have been set up with rows of water taps and access to safe drinking water. Most of the ground has been covered with tarpaulin, and mats will be laid under the tent. Ceiling fans, lighting, and a sound system have also been arranged.

With the holy Eid-ul-Azha just around the corner, all 22 designated cattle markets in the capital have witnessed a surge of the sellers and buyers.

Despite intermittent rain and muddy conditions, trading activity remains robust, with both buyers and sellers noting that prices are generally within tolerable limits.

While cattle markets officially opened last Tuesday, animals began arriving well in advance. The markets, which typically remain operational for five days—including Eid day—are currently at their busiest.

A visit to the cattle market near Dhaka Polytechnic Institute revealed an abundant supply of cows, goats, and sheep, with a high demand for small to medium-sized domestic breeds.

While prices were slightly lower earlier in the week, they have risen marginally in the last 24 hours. Still, most buyers and traders agreed that the rates remain reasonable.

Domestic cows—especially those raised on local farms with natural feed—are the most preferred choice this year.

Indian cattle are largely absent from the markets, according to traders Mostafa Matabbar, Russell and Rafiq, who spoke to BSS.

“Buyers are opting for local farm-raised cows, and the supply is strong,” said Matabbar. “There’s plenty of demand, especially for medium-sized cows.”

Salam Bepari, who brought cows from Pabna to the Amulia cattle market, spoke about the intense labor involved.

“From transporting to feeding and negotiating with buyers—we hardly get a moment to rest,” he said.

Despite the challenges, market-goers like Shariful Islam, a student at Dhaka University, expressed satisfaction.

“Compared to previous years, prices seem a bit lower,” he said at the North Shahjahanpur Rail Gate cattle market.

Goats remain a popular option, with prices ranging from Tk 10,000 to Tk 20,000.

At Gabtoli, the capital’s largest permanent cattle market, Mizanur Rahman, a buyer, observed that small cows were in highest demand.

Small-sized goats are priced between Tk 10,000 to Tk 15,000, medium-sized goats between Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 and large goats range from Tk 30,000 to Tk 50,000.

The market adjacent to the Brothers Union Club under DSCC is also bustling. Cows and goats have spilled over into nearby alleys due to high volume.

Tariqul Islam, a buyer at the market, said: “There’s a good supply of sacrificial animals in all sizes and affordable prices this year.”

Field visits on Wednesday morning showed ongoing preparations, with pandals being constructed using bamboo, ropes and tarpaulins to shelter the animals from the weather. Traders and workers remained busy managing the incoming livestock.

In a rare attraction, camels brought from Rajasthan, India, were spotted at the Gabtoli market, drawing large crowds and content creators eager to capture the moment.

At Merul Badda’s Kacha Bazar, leaseholder Mahmudul Hasan said local cattle dominate this year.

“The market is full and buyer turnout is high. If the weather is good, we expect brisk sales this afternoon and Friday.”

City Corporation officials confirmed that due to court orders, no markets were allowed to set this year in Aftabnagar and Meradia, though overall supply and management remain smooth.

Security has been heightened across all sites to ensure a safe and orderly experience for buyers and traders alike.

We must uphold the spirit of Eid-ul-Azha
Let safety, empathy, and civic duty mark this extended holiday

VISUAL: STAR

As Muslims around the world prepare to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha, it is a time to reflect on the values of sacrifice and gratitude that this festival embodies. These principles resonate deeply especially when millions in Gaza are facing hunger and death under Israeli attacks, and hundreds of Rohingya children are being denied their right to education. Closer to home, some workers are returning to their villages without receiving salaries or bonuses. Then there are the road accidents that have become a tragic routine during every Eid, as tens of thousands of people travel from cities to spend the holidays with loved ones.

Although, like during Eid-ul-Fitr earlier in the year, bus, train, and launch journeys have so far been relatively smooth, several road accidents and at least one robbery on the highway have already occurred, despite increased patrols by law enforcement. However, the responsibility of ensuring safety on highways and river routes does not rest solely with the authorities—it is shared by passengers, transport owners, and drivers alike. Passengers, too, must avoid overcrowded or unfit vehicles, while owners and drivers must prioritise safety over profit, avoiding reckless driving. Law enforcement officials must also remain vigilant.

Another critical aspect that calls for both responsible behaviour and proper planning is the sacrifice of animals. As we celebrate this act of devotion, we must not lose sight of our duty to show kindness to all living beings. Sacrificial animals should not be subjected to unnecessary cruelty. In cities and municipalities, we must ensure that animal waste and other refuse from our households and neighbourhoods are properly disposed of, and that streets, footpaths, and house premises where animals are kept or sacrificed are thoroughly cleaned.

This Eid-ul-Azha marks the first in which municipal and city corporations are being overseen by administrators rather than elected representatives. Many of these administrators are also juggling responsibilities in other government departments. However, this must not be used as an excuse for delays in post-Eid cleanliness drives. On the contrary, swift waste disposal should be treated as a top priority, especially as monsoon rains could worsen the stench and spread of blood, creating ideal conditions for the breeding of dengue mosquitoes. We also hope that the efforts of Dhaka South City Corporation will not be disrupted, as they were for 21 days when supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain staged protests at Nagar Bhaban.

We wish everyone a safe and joyful Eid.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will celebrate Eid-ul-Azha at her Gulshan residence “Feroza” in Dhaka, where she will exchange Eid greetings with members of the party’s Standing Committee.

BNP Standing Committee member AZM Zahid Hossain said one sacrifice will be performed at Feroza and another will take place in Gabtali, Bogura in the names of Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman, and their family members, according to bdnews24.com report.

TIME WITH EXTENDED FAMILY

On Eid day, Khaleda will spend the afternoon with her relatives.

Zahid said, “Her elder sister Selina Rahman, younger brother Shamim Eskandar, and their family members will come to Feroza to exchange Eid greetings with her.”

“She will have lunch with her relatives,” he added.

Zahid mentioned that in the evening, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other standing committee members will visit Feroza to exchange Eid greetings with the former prime minister.

TARIQUE CALLS KHALEDA

Zahid explained that Khaleda’s eldest son, the BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is celebrating Eid a day earlier, on Jun 6, due to time zone differences.

He has performed Eid prayers with the party members at a London Eidgah.

He said Tarique called his mother in the morning to wish her Eid greetings. Khaleda also spoke with her daughter-in-law and granddaughters.

Zahid confirmed that Tarique, his wife Zubaida Rahman, their daughter Zaima Rahman, as well as the late Arafat Rahman Coco’s wife Syeda Shamila Rahman and daughters Zahia Rahman and Zafia Rahman, are all celebrating Eid together in London.

Zubaida left Dhaka on Thursday and reached London later that night. Shamila had returned to London around a week and a half earlier.

Khaleda returned to Dhaka from London on May 6 after completing her medical treatment, accompanied by both of her daughters-in-law.

EID GREETINGS TO THE PEOPLE AND THE BNP

Zahid said the BNP chairperson has extended her Eid greetings to the people of Bangladesh and to BNP activists living abroad.

As part of Khaleda’s personal medical team, he said her condition is stable, with daily health checks carried out as recommended by the medical board.

CONCERN FOR THE PUBLIC AND EID CELEBRATIONS

Zahid said on the occasion of Eid, Khaleda wishes for everyone to be able to celebrate the festivities properly.

“She often says that Eid only finds meaning if the people are able to smile—if their burdens are eased, even slightly.”

The BNP chief celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr nearly two and a half months ago with her son in London. That celebration, shared with her two daughters-in-law and grandchildren, was her first Eid celebrated with family in over 15 years.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Friday extended his warm greetings to the nation on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Azha.

In a statement, the president said, “Eid Mubarak! On the occasion of one of the most significant religious festivals of the Muslims, Eid-ul-Azha, I extend my heartfelt greetings and felicitations to the people of Bangladesh and to all Muslim brothers and sisters around the world.”

Highlighting the spiritual essence of the festival, President Shahabuddin said Eid-ul-Azha embodies the profound lesson of ultimate sacrifice. “Prophet Ibrahim (AS) set an unparalleled example of unwavering devotion and love for Allah by offering to sacrifice his beloved son, Prophet Ismail (AS). This historical event holds immense significance for humanity and remains deeply instructive for us all,” he added.

He said the act of ‘Qurbani’ inspires a spirit of selflessness, strengthens the bonds of sharing joy and sorrow with relatives and neighbors, and fosters social harmony among the rich and the poor alike, reports UNB.

“Many underprivileged and impoverished people in our society live in hardship and distress. We must uphold the ideals of equality and fraternity exemplified by Eid-ul-Azha and share its joy with them,” the President added.

Shahabuddin also expressed the hope that the teachings of sacrifice will be reflected in the personal, social and national life of all.

“Alongside animal sacrifice, may we also cleanse our hearts of hatred, envy and malice—this is my prayer to Allah. May this holy Eid-ul-Azha bring welfare and prosperity to all,” he said.
