India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has urged the country’s armed forces to analyse the ongoing conflicts between Israel-Hamas, Russia-Ukraine, and the current state of affairs in Bangladesh to prepare India for the “unexpected”.

He made the remarks on Thursday during a joint commanders’ conference in India’s Lucknow, according to the Indian newspaper The Telegraph, reports bdnews24.com.

Singh underscored the need for a thorough analysis in light of the recent circumstances in the India-China border and neighbouring countries “which are posing a challenge to peace and stability in the region”.

He also emphasised on a coordinated and proportionate response to provocation for any challenges India may face during future wars.

“Despite global volatility, India is enjoying a rare peace dividend and it is developing peacefully. However, due to the increasing number of challenges, we need to remain alert,” he was quoted as telling the commanders.

“We need to focus on our present, keep an eye on the activities happening around us at present, and focus on being future-oriented.

“For this, we should have a strong and robust national security component. We should have a fail-proof deterrence,” Singh was quoted saying.

He also highlighted the significance of using artificial intelligence to develop electronic and space warfare.

“These components do not participate in any conflict or war directly. Their indirect participation is deciding the course of warfare to a great extent,” he added.

While referring to India as a ‘peace-loving’ nation, he stressed that the Indian armed forces need to be ready for war to “preserve peace”.

His comments have stirred curious reactions in Bangladesh as they come in the context of the collapse of the government of Sheikh Hasina who has fled to India.

Former prime minister Hasina has long been regarded as one of India’s closest allies.

There has been a growing surge of anti-India sentiments and rhetoric in Bangladesh, especially since the massive July-August protests that overthrew the Hasina government.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said India is a "peace-loving nation" but the armed forces need to be "prepared for war in order to preserve peace."

Speaking at the maiden Joint Commanders’ Conference in Lucknow on the second and final day of the apex-level military leadership meeting, Singh commended the armed forces for their invaluable contribution in safeguarding national interests and advancing the vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” and appreciated the efforts being undertaken for furthering jointness and integration among the three Services.

In line with the theme of the conference, “Sashakt aur Surakshit Bharat: Transforming the Armed Forces,” Singh stressed upon the significance of evolving joint military vision and preparing for the type of challenges the country may face in future wars, while emphasizing on synergized, swift and proportionate response to provocations.

Referring to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Hamas conflicts and the current unstable situation in Bangladesh, the minister exhorted the commanders to analyze these episodes, predict the problems that the country may face in the future, and stay prepared to deal with the "unexpected."

Singh emphasized on the need of a broader and deeper analysis by the top military leadership in view of the situation along the northern border and the happenings in neighbouring countries, "which are posing a challenge to peace and stability in the region."

"Despite global volatility, India is enjoying a rare peace dividend and it is developing peacefully. However, due to the increasing number of challenges, we need to remain alert. It is important that we keep our peace intact during Amrit Kaal. We need to focus on our present, keep an eye on the activities happening around us at present, and focus on being future-oriented. For this, we should have a strong and robust national security component. We should have fail-proof deterrence," Singh added.

The minister also asked commanders to identify and include the right mix of traditional and modern warfare equipment in the armed forces arsenal.

Singh stressed on capability development in space and electronic warfare, describing them as integral to tackle modern-day challenges.

He also urged the military leadership to focus on increasing the use of latest technological advancements in the fields of data and artificial intelligence.

"These components do not participate in any conflict or war directly. Their indirect participation is deciding the course of warfare to a great extent," Singh said.

Voicing concern over Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's remarks, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday urged the neighbouring country to respect Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty.

Talking to reporters after placing a wreath at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave, he also reminded India that the people of Bangladesh would not accept it well if it maintains contact exclusively with Sheikh Hasina and her party, adopting a one-sided approach, reports UNB.

“What the Indian Defence Minister said after a meeting with military commanders was alarming. There are questions in the public's mind about whether his comments are intended as provocation,” the BNP leader stated.

He questioned whether the Indian minister's remarks were part of India’s efforts to comfort Sheikh Hasina and assist her in regaining her dominion. “If not, then why is the Defence Minister speaking in this manner?”

Earlier on Friday, Rajnath Singh urged India’s armed forces to analyse the ongoing conflicts between Israel and Hamas, Russia and Ukraine, and the current situation in Bangladesh to prepare for the “unexpected”.

Rizvi said the people of Bangladesh are now moving freely after driving out the “monster” Sheikh Hasina from the country.

“The fear of arrest or enforced disappearance has disappeared. People are now roaming freely and sleeping peacefully. Don’t you (India) appreciate this? Don’t the Indian policymakers wish for the return of democracy in Bangladesh, for people to live in peace, and to reside in a sovereign country?” he asked.

The BNP leader also questioned whether India is unable to accept the reality that Sheikh Hasina has been ousted from Bangladesh. “If that is the case, it suggests that for you, the people of Bangladesh and their sovereignty are not truly secure. It appears that only one person, Sheikh Hasina, is deemed safe in your view. This is very unfortunate.”

Despite having many unresolved issues, he said Bangladesh respects India’s sovereignty. “Just as we respect India's sovereignty, India should also respect our freedom and sovereignty.”

Rizvi noted that the people of Bangladesh, on August 5, unitedly took to the streets, risking their lives to drive out Sheikh Hasina, just as they had previously driven out the British and ousted the Pakistanis in 1971.

“Just as the people of Bangladesh can endure oppression for a long time, they also know how to unite and show resolve against foreign invaders. India must remember that Bangladesh is a nation of heroes,” he said.

The BNP leader said Sheikh Hasina killed over a thousand people and fled to India when no other option was available, as people were heading towards her residence, Ganabhaban, defying the curfew.

“One of her ministers (Quader) had claimed that the daughter of Bangabandhu would not flee. Now, where is Sheikh Mujib’s daughter? How can those who have oppressed their own people, who have made Ayna Ghar and concentration camps to detain people for years, govern this country?” he questioned.

Rizvi said that Hasina has been staying in India because no democratic country, including the UK and the USA, is willing to grant her asylum.

Recalling that one of Sheikh Hasina's Foreign Ministers once likened India-Bangladesh relations to that of a husband and wife, he said, “When Hasina fled to India, she was received there as if she were a bride.”

Rizvi, along with members of the Nurses' Association of Bangladesh, placed a wreath at the grave of former President Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, marking the 21st anniversary of the organisation’s founding.

Surprised by Rajnath’s statement, says foreign adviser

Foreign affairs adviser Touhid Hossain speaks to the media in Dhaka on 8 September 20204. Prothom Alo

The foreign affairs adviser, Touhid Hossain, has said the recent statement of Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh took him by surprise as he sees not a slightest fear of conflict with the neighbouring nation.

While talking to the media at the foreign ministry on Sunday afternoon, the adviser said he is more surprised than being concerned with the Indian minister’s statement on the Indian forces' preparation for impending challenges.

On 5 September, Rajnath Singh, maintaining that India is a peace-loving country, called upon the armed forces to be prepared to tackle future wars.

He made reference to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas conflicts and the current situation in Bangladesh, and exhorted the commanders to analyse these episodes, predict the problems that the country may face in the future, and stay prepared to deal with the “unexpected”.

In this regard, Touhid Hossain said, “We need to understand if he made the statement for domestic consumption. Also, the way he spoke is like beating about the bush. I do not see any ground for India to be prepared for a war due to the Ukraine war. How the problems with Hamas are relevant here, and how Bangladesh can be compared with the Ukraine and Hamas issues – I do not understand it.”

Asked if the Indian minister’s statement is a type of threat to Bangladesh, the adviser said, “I still believe that he made the statement for domestic consumption. Therefore, I am unwilling to make any assumption. We will surely see what is taking place and why.”

Regarding the political asylum of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in India, Touhid Hossain said, “Usually, any country can grant political asylum to anyone. We will see if it is going to happen in this case.”

I have no respect for people like this.

This is a home minister of a nation of 1.4 Billion people. This is the best defense mind they could present to the world. I have no words.

Basically acting like a bully, thinking that their bullying will work in Bangladesh, just like in Nepal or Maldives.

I hope someone in their vishwaguru team reminds him not to play with fire.
