PTI founder Imran Khan categorically rejected on Thursday helping PPP scion Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari form a government in the Centre post-February 8 elections, Express News reported.

The former premier’s remarks come a day after Bilawal, vying for the post of prime minister, in an interview with Reuters, said he “preferred forming a government with independent candidates”.

Bilawal’s strategy is informed by the PTI’s current circumstances that have rendered its candidates incapable of contesting elections under the party’s name or using its electoral symbol.

The apex court, on January 13, set aside the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) January 10 order, effectively depriving the PTI of its iconic election symbol of a cricket bat in a major blow to the former ruling party ahead of the February 8 general elections. This leaves the party with the option of having its candidates contest upcoming elections as independents.

Informally addressing the media following the cypher case hearing at Adiala jail, where the ex-PM is currently incarcerated, Imran asked Bilawal to “ask those for help with whom you remained in government for 16 months”.

Imran dubs cipher trial a ‘joke’ over appointment of state defence team

Deploring the appointment of state defence counsels in the cipher case, former prime minister Imran Khan on Saturday said the trial was nothing less than a “joke” because the prosecution and defence team both belonged to the government.

“The prosecution team and defence counsels both belong to the government,” Imran said during the hearing today. “This is a joke.”

An order of Friday’s hearing issued today, available with Dawn.com, stated that Malik Abdur Rehman was appointed as Imran’s state defence counsel while Hazrat Younis would defend former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Authored by Judge Abual Hasnaat Muhammad Zulqarnain, the order noted that the defence counsel on January 16 had agreed to conduct the cross-examinations but did not appear in the next two court hearings.

“Despite several opportunities given to the learned counsels for accused persons, this court is left with no choice but to appoint defense counsels for the accused persons to conduct cross-examination of the prosecution witnesses (PWs),” the order stated.

“They will represent the case and will conduct cross-examination on the PWs. All the remaining PWs be summoned and the PWs present in court today are bound [..] to come up on Jan 27, 2024,” it added.

The cipher case pertains to a diplomatic document that the Federal Investigation Agency’s charge sheet alleges was never returned by Imran. The PTI has long held that the document contained a threat from the United States to oust Imran as prime minister.

Last year in December, Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb had restrained the special court from proceeding against the suspects — including Qureshi — till Jan 11, noting that there were “legal errors” in the case.

The decision had come on Imran’s petition challenging the trial — being conducted at Adiala Jail — and subsequent developments, including the framing of charges and a gag order on the media.

The special court had begun the cipher trial afresh last month at the Adiala district jail after Imran and Qureshi were indicted for a second time in the case on December 13.

The former premier and Qureshi, who is also behind bars, were first indicted in the case in October. Both had pleaded not guilty. The IHC had termed the government’s notification for a jail trial “erroneous” and scrapped the entire proceedings.

In December, the Supreme Court had approved the post-arrest bails of Imran and Qureshi. While Imran remains incarcerated in other cases, Qureshi’s expected release was also stalled as he was manhandled and re-arrested in a fresh May 9 case.

Yesterday, the FIA prosecutor asked the special court to close the defence counsel’s right to cross-examination, alleging that the defence side was applying delaying tactics to prolong the trial.

Hearing

During the hearing of the case earlier today, senior PTI lawyers were not present so which cross-examination of witnesses couldn’t take place again.

However, assistant lawyers Usman Gill and Khalid Yousuf Chaudhry were in attendance. The state defence counsels appointed by the court for Imran and Qureshi, Advocates Rehman and Younis also turned up.

At the hearing’s outset, a heated argument occurred between Imran and the judge with the PTI founder and Qureshi expressing shock at the government lawyers representing them in court.

Imran and Qureshi expressed no-confidence in the ability of the lawyers to defend them with the latter throwing the case file at the government lawyers.

Judge Zulqarnain reminded Imran and Qureshi that their lawyers did not appear before the court despite being given three chances.

At this, Qureshi interjected saying: “This is not a government drama and it will not go on like this. What value will the trial have like this?”

The judge maintained that it was easy for him to put an end to the right of defence, however, Judge Zulqarnanin said that he still granted the accused persons with state defence counsels.

“I am tired of ordering your lawyers to appear before the court,” he added. “The Supreme Court had stated that the court can cancel the bail awarded to the accused persons if hurdles are created in the trial.”

Here, Qureshi said a mockery was made out of the Supreme Court’s decision, highlighting that he was picked up in another case as soon as he was released.

Judge Zulqarnain then asked Qureshi what was the point of delaying the case.

“No one stays happy in jail,” Qureshi replied. “I want to present my lawyers. I don’t trust government lawyers.”

The judge told Qureshi to call his lawyers to the court.

“Prosecution-named lawyers will be carrying out our defence,” he said. “This only proves that the decision has already been taken against us.”

Gul informed the court that former caretaker Punjab chief minister Najam Sethi recently said that the verdict of the cipher case would be announced by February 5.

“Najam Sethi should be summoned to the court and asked where he obtained that information from,” Qureshi told the judge. At this, the judge asked Qureshi whether he trusted Sethi more or the court.

FIA prosecutor Rizwan Abbasi urged the court to cancel the bail of Imran and Qureshi in light of the Supreme Court verdict. Here, Judge Zulqarnain told the prosecutor that he would look into the bail matter himself.

Imran and Qureshi also got a chance to talk to media persons inside the courtroom. However, as the hearing continued further, journalists were later asked to leave the courtroom.

At this, the judge said he provided them with whatever relief could be given.

“Whether it’s providing you with the cipher or meeting with the lawyers, I accepted all your requests,” he said. “I have 75 requests on record pertaining to meetings.”

Imran pointed out that the meetings did not take place despite the judge’s order.

The ex-premier deplored how he did not have the right to fight the case through his lawyers. “The case proceedings should be conducted in Urdu,” Imran said. “We don’t understand the English spoken by government lawyers.”

The PTI founder termed the case proceedings as conflicting with the demands of a transparent trial, adding that such a trial had never taken place in the country’s history.

Qureshi said the Kot Lakhpat jail had never been disrespected like this before. He said justice was being denied. “Neither is there present the fear of Allah, fear of the Constitution, or the fear of law.”

The PTI founder contended before the court that their lawyers were not being allowed to enter the jail.

“If Shah Mahmood Qureshi wants to present his arguments, he can do it himself too,” the judge said. “It was easy for me to deprive you of your right to defence.”

Accepting the request of the accused persons, the court ordered the Adiala Jail superintendent to allow the defendants to meet their lawyers.

The cross-examination of nine more witnesses was completed today by the government lawyers. In total, the cross-examination of 13 witnesses has been completed so far.

The hearing was adjourned till Monday when the cross-examinations of 12 more witnesses will begin.

PESHAWAR:
The Peshawar High Court on Thursday dismissed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) petition seeking holding the general elections 2024 under the supervision of the judiciary.

A division bench of the PHC comprising Chief Justice Ibrahim Khan and Justice Shakeel Ahmad announced the verdict that was reserved on Dec 18, 2023.

The petition, filed by a lawyer associated with the PTI, had raised questions over the transparency of the election slated for Feb 8, following the appointment of election supervisors from civil bureaucracy.

What new depths will the state plumb as it makes clear its antipathy towards Imran?

For now, we may only spectate as institutions bend to the will of those who think that no elected leader deserves a free pass.

Double down

TWO verdicts in two days. A 14-year sentence for ‘corruption’ to accompany a 10-year sentence for ‘divulging state secrets’. First, his top lieutenant, and now his spouse also convicted and jailed.

And still, former prime minister Imran Khan’s troubles are far from over. What new depths will the state plumb as it makes clear its antipathy towards him?

The days leading up to the Feb 8 elections may hold more ‘surprises’. For now, we may only sit and spectate as facts, procedures, laws and institutions bend to the will of those who think that no elected leader deserves a free pass — until they decide they do.

Mr Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been convicted for under-declaring the value of a jewellery set they received as a gift while the former was still in office. The verdict has been delivered via an accountability court judge who, just days before the last general election, had also convicted this year’s front-runners in the Avenfield reference.

That judgement was overturned in November last year. Most commentators believe this one will not last too long, either. Incidentally — or perhaps by design — the same judge is also supposed to hear a similar case involving items retained from the state’s gift repository. The matter involves several cars allegedly retained by Messrs Nawaz Sharif, Yousuf Raza Gilani and Asif Ali Zardari in violation of Toshakhana rules.

Govt stopped from putting PTI leaders in Fourth Schedule

Bureau Report
February 1, 2024

PESHAWAR: A Peshawar High Court bench on Wednesday stopped the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government from placing the names of former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser and five other former lawmakers of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf in the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Wiqar Ahmad also asked the government to respond to the petitions of Mr Qaiser, former MNA Junaid Akber and former MPAs Iftikhar Mishwani, Zahir Shah Toru, Shakeel Khan and Liaqat Ali against the Fourth Schedule move by Feb 20.

The petitioners have challenged the home department’s “ongoing process” to place their names in the Fourth Schedule on the recommendations of the administrations of Mardan, Swabi and Malakand districts.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, who was handed down a 14-year jail sentence in the Toshakhana case along with his wife Bushra Bibi a day earlier, said that verdicts against them were coming from "elsewhere" and their “puppets” were merely announcing them.

The verdict came just a day after a special court, established under the Official Secrets Act, awarded Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi 10 years imprisonment in the high-profile cypher case.

Speaking to journalists following a hearing of “un-Islamic” marriage case, Khan lashed out at the judges making the decisions, saying that they were turning the justice system into a spectacle.

“We will show the public in a press conference that necklace [in Toshakhana case] based on which the conviction was made,” he added.

Imran said that the necklace was not in Toshakhana (gift depository) and that a Saudi envoy himself had brought it to his residence, adding that Bushra Bibi had nothing to do with the case.

Regarding allegations against him, Khan clarified, "I did not enter politics to strike deals or seek personal benefits. Including Bushra Bibi in cases was a move to tarnish my reputation.”

On Bani Gala being declared “sub-jail”, Khan stated, "I just found out that Bushra Bibi was moved to Bani Gala last night. We did not request or seek any special treatment for her."

Will prefer death over striking a deal: Imran

After his conviction in Iddat case, PTI chief Imran Khan said he has neither accepted nor would accept in future any deals with the powers that be, saying, going as far as saying that he would “choose death over making a deal with anyone”.

In a brief chat with court reporters after the verdict, he said, “I have not made a deal, nor will I ever make one.”

He said that his party’s top leadership was targeted right after the announcement of the election schedule.

“Now, election candidates are not even being allowed to run their campaigns,” he rued.

Iddat case created to ‘humiliate’ me and Bushra Bibi: Imran

Following his conviction in Iddat case, PTI founder Imran Khan told court reporters that the case against him was created to “humiliate and disgrace” both him and his spouse, Bushra Bibi.

“This marks the first instance in history where a case related to Iddat has been initiated,” he said.

Imran said it was also the first time that someone was sentenced 14 years imprisonment in a Toshakhana case.

Changing only the government will not solve the problem. It is the whole system that must be replaced with a pro-people system. We need a whole new motherboard with a new processor and operating system for Pakistan. It will never happen if we wait for anyone to do it. The people have to take responsibility for their own country. Leadership will come by itself when people know what they have to do. However, how things have been running since 1947 is a real tragedy.

His political party is effectively banned, his speeches are barred from television, and he faces at least 14 years in prison. But as the Pakistan election results show, Imran Khan cannot be suppressed.

Independent candidates affiliated with the former prime minister’s Pakistan Tehereek-e-Insaf (PTI) party secured the most parliamentary seats in last week’s nationwide election, the election commission announced Sunday.

It is a stunning victory for an incarcerated Khan who, two years ago faced a dramatic ouster as prime minister and most recently faced a military-led crackdown analysts say was designed to thwart the cricket icon’s return to power.

“You kept my trust, and your massive turnout has stunned everyone,” an AI-generated video of Khan shared by the PTI that mimicked his voice, said to his millions of followers shortly after his victory. “Now show the strength of protecting your vote.” Khan’s team has previously used AI to deliver his speeches from behind bars.

• PTI founder says will approach Supreme Court against ‘rigged’ polls; thanks supporters for ‘two-thirds’ majority
• Names Gandapur for KP CM, yet to decide on PM slot

ISLAMABAD: As his opponents cobble up a coalition to rule for the next five years, PTI founder Imran Khan on Tuesday revealed that the former ruling party was willing to talk to all political parties except for the PPP, PML-N and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-P).

The remarks by the former premier came at a time when his rivals — despite failing to secure a majority in the lower house of parliament — have decided to enter an alliance, likely to be led by the PML-N, with the help of erstwhile Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) partners. Mr Khan appeared before a judge in cases registered against him in connection with the violence on May 9.

Speaking to reporters at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Imran Khan revealed that the PTI information secretary had been tasked to approach the political parties, except for the ones mentioned above, to initiate a dialogue.

In response to a question about whether the PTI would form the federal government, Imran Khan said that his party’s priority was to challenge the results of the polls in the Supreme Court. He said he had never witnessed such a rigged election and urged all political parties, calling out rigging, to form a joint front.

No political revenge upon returning to power: Imran

Feb 16, 2024
Former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan declared on Friday that his party will adopt a "Fatah-e-Makkah" approach upon returning to power, vowing not to seek political vengeance.

"We will not take any political revenge, but we will take the country and the nation forward for the sake of the development of the country and the nation," he stated, as conveyed by PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan following a 30-minute long meeting with Imran Khan at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.

PTI ready to talk to establishment: Raoof Hasan

Updated Feb 16, 2024
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson Raoof Hasan affirmed the party's readiness for dialogue with the establishment, emphasising that the purpose of contacting political parties is not to form an electoral alliance but to bring all political forces together on a unified platform.

Speaking on the Express News programme 'Center Stage' on Friday, Hasan highlighted that PTI's founder, Imran Khan, has consistently advocated for engaging with all political parties. He emphasised that if political parties engage in positive politics, there is no harm in holding meetings and fostering collaboration.

"The purpose of contacting political parties is not at all electoral alliance; our aim is that all political parties come together on one platform," stated Hasan during the programme.

PTI leader and senior lawyer Salman Akram Raja was arrested on Saturday in Lahore as the party protested alleged rigging in the February 8 elections.

Surrounded by security personnel and media persons, Raja said he stood "with the people of Pakistan" as the police dragged him towards their vehicle.

Later in the day, Raja, taking to X, said that he has been released.

On February 15, PTI chairman Barrister Gohar announced the initiation of nationwide protest demonstrations for Saturday (today) against perceived rigging in the general election.

He invited all political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan, Grand Democratic Alliance, Awami National Party, and others, who believe their mandate was stolen, to join the protest for democracy, rule of law, and freedom.

PTI, JI unite against poll rigging

Last night, in a significant development, a delegation from the PTI met with leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, where both parties expressed their concerns over the alleged rigging in the recent general elections and announced a joint protest against the perceived irregularities.

PTI leader and former speaker of the National Assembly, Asad Qaiser, addressed the media after the meeting, stating that the two parties had a one-point agenda at this time – to protest against what they termed as "rigged" elections.

Qaiser emphasised that the level of rigging alleged in this election is unprecedented, prompting the need for collective action among parties that have raised their voices against it.

Protests in Karachi, Peshawar

In Karachi, hundreds of PTI workers and supporters gathered outside the Election Commission of Pakistan’s Sindh office in the city’s Saddar area.

The protesters chanted slogans against the alleged rigging and demanded the judiciary and state institutions to intervene and fix the “flaws” in the results.

The charged crowd, including women and children, carried party flags and danced to the tunes of party songs.

They claimed that the mandate of Karachi was “stolen” on Feb 8 and that it could lead to “disastrous repercussions”, like damaging the democracy and affecting the parliamentary system.

The party’s Sindh chapter president, Haleem Adil Sheikh, and other senior leaders addressed the demonstration and vowed to keep raising their voices against the “rigged” elections“.

Any move to harass PTI leaders and supporters will not stop them from exercising their democratic right to protest, the speakers vowed.

In Peshawar and other areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI workers, including the newly elected lawmakers, staged rallies.

The rally in the provincial capital was addressed by PTI provincial president and chief minister-designate Ali Amin Gandapur and other leaders.

In his speech, Mr Gandapur said his party would not seek revenge but would reform institutions responsible for the “political witch-hunt” of his party workers and leaders.

“Reforms are necessary for the bright future of our children,” Mr Gandapur said, without specifying which institutions he aims to reform.

Amid cheers from the protesters, the PTI leader said those who resisted reforms would be punished as per law.

Holding a portrait of the PTI’s founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, he said that the party’s next government in KP would ensure rights for women and vowed to revive the Sehat Card health insurance programme.

Imran wants IMF programme halted over 'election fraud'

Feb 22, 18:08
Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan will write a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the alleged rigging during the February 8 general elections, his party officials said.

Speaking to journalists outside Adiala Jail after a meeting with Imran Khan, PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and party leader Senator Ali Zafar confirmed Khan's plan to dispatch the letter to the IMF today.

Zafar underscored the significance of good governance, asserting, "IMF, European Union have their own mandate, and good governance is the merit of IMF." He went on to claim that international organisations refrain from engaging with countries lacking democratic practices.

PTI to hold intra-party elections on March 3

Feb 22, 2024
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will hold a fresh round of intra-party elections on March 3 as per the schedule released by the party.

According to the schedule, nomination papers for the intra-party elections can be submitted on February 23 and 24, with the scrutiny of documents scheduled for February 25.

Decisions regarding the candidacy papers for PTI intra-party elections will be finalised by February 27, while the polling is scheduled for March 3. Polling will take place in all provincial secretariats, including the central office.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar and General Secretary PTI Omar Ayub did not join the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). Both Gohar and Ayub will be part of the assembly as independent members, revealed sources.

Gohar is a candidate for the post of chairman, while Ayub is a candidate for general secretary.

Previously, on February 2, a day after PTI announced the schedule for fresh inter-party polls, the party opted to postpone them until after February 8.

The decision was attributed to the commitments of members in their respective constituencies and alleged "unlawful blocking of PTI venues by the administration".

Ahead of the polls, the Supreme Court had stripped the party of its symbol, upholding the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision to declare PTI's internal polls as "unconstitutional."

Consequently, the party lost its iconic 'bat' electoral symbol, compelling its members to contest elections as independent candidates under different symbols. Furthermore, PTI forfeited the right to reserved seats for women and minorities.

In the aftermath of the general elections on February 8, a significant number of PTI-backed independent candidates emerged victorious. However, due to the altered political landscape, the party had to forge an alliance with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) to secure reserved seats.

SIC races to get its share of reserved seats

Feb 22,
The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), seeking the allocation of reserved seats in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies after the PTI sealed its alliance with the council.

The ECP was requested to allot the seats on the basis of the inclusion of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidates in their party.

A request, in this regard, drafted by SIC Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza was submitted with the polls supervisory body through a PTI representative.

On Monday, the PTI announced that its independent candidates would join the SIC to form governments at the Centre, in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a bid to secure reserved seats. The development came almost 10 days after the Feb 8 polls.
