Although the idea began as a pagan thing + the imaginary birthday of Isa AS. Though some holly-rollers of late (especially in the US) are also trying to hijack Christmas into a religious Christian idea. It is purely about the spirit of giving selflessly with an open heart and asking for nothing in return. Whether your gift cost nothing or a million. An expression of love, joy, kindness, good wish and a kindred spirit. To quote a much cliche'd expression - it's the thought that counts.
