Lt Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman named new army chief
Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman, OSP, SGP, psc, Chief of General Staff (CGS) has been promoted to general and appointed as the Chief of Army Staff.
According to a press release from ISPR, he has been appointed as the Army chief for three years from June 23.
He will replace current army chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed.
Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman assumed the duties of Chief of General Staff of Bangladesh Army on January 1, 2024.
An alumnus of Bangladesh Military Academy, the general was commissioned in the Corps of Infantry on December 20, 1985.
Having an illustrious and colourful career of more than three and half decades, Lieutenant General Waker brings with him an enormous amount of experience of holding key command, staff and instructional appointments.
In his distinguished military career, Lieutenant General Waker commanded an Infantry Battalion, the only Independent Infantry Brigade of Bangladesh Army and an Infantry Division.
His key staff appointments include staff officer at an Infantry Brigade, School of Infantry and Tactics and Army Headquarters.
He was a distinguished instructor at 'School of Infantry and Tactics', 'Non-commissioned Officers' Academy' and Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations Training'.
Lieutenant General Waker served as the military secretary in Army Headquarters.
Prior to joining as the CGS of Bangladesh Army, he performed as principal staff officer of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Armed Forces Division under Prime Minister's Office.
Lieutenant General Waker is an alumnus of the Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur and Joint Services Command and Staff College, UK.
He holds a master degree in Defence Studies from National University of Bangladesh and Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King's College, University of London.
As the head of the Armed Forces Division, he was directly involved with the UN Peacekeeping Affairs of Bangladesh Armed Forces.
He was also nominated as a Gender Champion and Gender Advocate of Bangladesh for UN Peacekeeping Affairs.
By virtue of his appointment as principal staff officer, he also headed the 'Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention' as chairman.
Under the Blue Helmet, Lieutenant General Waker completed two tours of duty as observer and staff in UNAVEM (Angola) and UNMIL (Liberia) respectively.
As the CGS of the Bangladesh Army, he is responsible for the military operations, military intelligence, UN peacekeeping affairs, budget, and many other affairs of the army.
Lieutenant General Waker had the rare privilege of commanding the National Victory Day Parade for three consecutive times.
He was awarded the coveted 'Army Medal of Glory (SGP)' and Extraordinary Service Medal (OSP) for his remarkable contributions in the modernization of the army.
He frequents as a keynote speaker in different seminars and symposiums both at home and abroad.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) yesterday protested a report published by various media outlets titled, "Army Chief faces anger by young army officers at a meeting that day."
In a rejoinder, ISPR said the news was published based merely on a report in the Indian newspaper "The Week", which was motivated and misleading. It is advisable to contact ISPR for an accurate presentation of any internal information related to army affairs, said an ISPR press release.
In fact, the meeting was a regular internal meeting of the Bangladesh Army, held in a very cordial and conducive atmosphere, and ended amicably. An attempt has been made to tarnish the glorious image of the Bangladesh Army before the public by spreading such news about the patriotic and professional army.
The Bangladesh Army, according to the ISPR release, always expects responsible and objective reporting from the media. Every member of the army performs their duties with strong loyalty and fidelity to the chain of command, which they have constantly demonstrated and continue to demonstrate.
In the future, the statement said, the Bangladesh Army expects the media to reflect the statements of all parties concerned in order to disseminate objective news.
A special request has been made not to create confusion in the public mind and unintentionally help spread rumours by reporting the news solely on the basis of misinformation spread by any foreign media, said the release.
The Bangladesh Army is determined to provide all-out cooperation to the news media in disseminating objective and constructive news.

Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan has assumed the duties of Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division as of Thursday (August 22, 2024).

Army officer stabbed to death by robbers in Cox’s Bazar
A lieutenant of the Bangladesh Army was killed during an operation by joint forces in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar early today, police said.
The army officer, Lt Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon, was posted at Ramu Cantonment in Cox's Bazar.
The operation was being conducted against criminals, including those who held illegal arms, reports our Cox's Bazar correspondent.
Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Rahmat Ullah confirmed that Lt Tanjim was killed by robbers in Dulahazra union during a joint forces' operation.
In a statement, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said a team of the Bangladesh army was responding to intelligence reports of robbery going on in Purba Maizpara village of Dulhazra union.
At around 4:00am, a group of seven or eight robbers, sensing the presence of the army patrol, tried to escape when Lt Tanzim Sarwar Nirjon gave chase after them.
The robbers attacked Lt Tanzim at this time and stabbed him in the neck, severely injuring him and leading to tremendous blood loss, the statement reads.
He was immediately rescued and taken to Malumghat Memorial Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead, according to ISPR.
Hailing from Tangail, Lt Tanzim Sarwar Nirjon was a former student of Pabna Cadet College. He received his commission in the Army Service Corps (ASC) from Bangladesh Military Academy on June 8, 2022, after the completion of the 82nd Long Course.
ISPR also informed that three robbers were arrested from the location, with one locally made firearm, and six rounds of ammunition. Three others were apprehended on suspicion of robbery as well.

In a statement, he said the miscreants attempting to put the interim government in trouble have revealed their true intentions through this incident.
Tarique called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and ensure exemplary punishment for them.
"Miscreants have persistently engaged in terrorist activities to destabilise the country. These conspiratorial elements are involved in various nefarious acts to place the interim government in a difficult position," he stated.
The BNP leader noted that the brutal murder of Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjan while on duty on Monday night was part of this ongoing plot.
"The miscreants demonstrated their intent by killing a young army officer. If these individuals are not suppressed decisively, the safety of the nation will remain severely threatened," he observed.
Tarique warned that conspirators are lying in wait to exploit the situation and create chaos in the country.
In light of this, he urged people from all walks of life to unite in combating miscreants to ensure peace, stability and security, and establish democracy.
The BNP acting chairman strongly condemned and protested the murder of Tanjim Sarwar.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate of the Bangladesh Armed Forces has confirmed the detention of six individuals directly involved in the killing of Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar of the Bangladesh Army.
This announcement comes in the wake of the tragic incident that occurred during an operation to prevent robbery, UNB reports.
Lieutenant Tanzim, aged 23, was martyred around 3 am on Tuesday, while conducting a mission based on intelligence information in a remote area of Chakaria of Cox's Bazar.
Following the incident, the Bangladesh Army conducted a combing operation in the area, resulting in the arrest of six suspects associated with the killing. The authorities recovered significant evidence from the detainees, including two locally-made firearms, 11 rounds of various types of ammunition, a knife believed to have been used in the murder, a pickup truck, and a motorcycle.
Preliminary interrogations revealed that four of the detainees were directly involved in the crime, while the remaining two assisted by providing critical information. The suspects have been identified as Md Babul Prakash (44), Md Helal Uddin (34), Md Anwar Hakim (28), Md Arif Ullah (25), Md Ziabul Karim (45), and Md. Hossain (39).
Among them, Md Babul Prakash has been identified as the main financier of the operation and has provided a preliminary confession, admitting that he fatally stabbed Lieutenant Tanzim.
In addition, the second-in-command of the robber gang, Md Helal Uddin, along with driver Md Anwar Hakim, armed member Md Arif Ullah, and informants Md. Ziabul Karim and Md. Hossain, have all admitted to their direct involvement in the incident. The Bangladesh Army's operation to apprehend other involved members of the robber gang is ongoing.
The six detained individuals have been handed over to the Chakaria Police Station, and the process of filing a case at the police station by the army personnel is currently underway.

Interim government’s chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus directed the army selection board to promote those officers who have succeeded in providing competent leadership, irrespective of political ideology.
The CA said this while inaugurating the ‘Army Headquarters Selection Board-2024’ at the Army Headquarters in the capital on Sunday.
In the 1st phase under this promotion board, eligible officers for the ranks of colonel and lieutenant colonel in Bangladesh Army will be considered for promotion, an ISPR press release said.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, the Chief Adviser welcomed all to the new Bangladesh achieved through the student-people revolution.
He remembered with deep respect all who were killed in the anti-discrimination student movement in July-August. He also recalled all the brave soldiers of the armed forces, including Bangladesh Army, who participated in the Great War of Liberation.
The nation will always remember with respect the self-sacrifice of martyrs of the armed forces, the Chief Adviser said.
He directed the members of the Selection Board to give emphasis on professional competence, leadership qualities, standards of discipline, honesty, trustworthiness and loyalty, and the overall suitability of the officers for their promotion.
The officers with honesty, integrity and other leadership qualities deserve higher promotion, he said.
Highlighting the contribution of Bangladesh Army, he said the Army stood by the country’s people at the time of crisis and saved the country from an unstable situation by expediting the process of forming an interim government.
As a result, the chief adviser said, Bangladesh Army has once again been recognised as a symbol of trust by the people of the country.
On arrival at the venue, Chief Adviser Prof Yunus was welcomed by Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the chief adviser’s special assistant on defense and national solidarity, and the Chief of General Staff and Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division.
The Chief of Army Staff expressed gratitude to the Chief Adviser for inaugurating the selection board despite his busy schedule.
The defense secretary and senior officers of the army were present at the inauguration ceremony.
At the end of the ceremony, Chief Adviser Prof Yunus participated in a photo session with the army officers and wrote his comments on the visitors’ book.

Two major generals were promoted to lieutenant general, including Faizur Rahman, the director general of DGFI. Rahman has now taken on the role of QuarterMaster General (QMG) at Army Headquarters.
The 24 Infantry Division (Chittagong Cantonment) GOC, Major General Md Mainur Rahman, has been promoted to lieutenant general and appointed as the GOC of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC).
In addition, Major General Mohammad Jahangir Alam has taken over as the new director general of DGFI.

During the visit, the army chief met UN high officials related to the peacekeeping missions at its headquarters as well as high-ranking military and civil officials of the US and Canada, including the USA army chief.
On October 17, the army chief joined a bilateral meeting at UN headquarters in New York with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare, Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights Ilze Brands Kehris, Assistant Secretary General for Middle East, Asia, and Pacific Affairs Mohammed Khaled Khiari, and Director of Office for Peacekeeping Strategic Partnership General Jai Menon.
The army chief visited the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in New York and paid a courtesy call on the permanent representative.
On October 22, the army chief paid a courtesy call on US Chief of Staff of the Army General Randy A George at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.
Besides, Bangladesh Army Chief paid a courtesy call on US Assistant Secretary of Defence for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Dr Ely Ratner.
He also called on US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu.
During the visit to Canada, the army chief met Lieutenant General Stephen R Kelsey, vice-chief of the defense staff of Canada.
Besides, the army chief also paid a courtesy call on Citizenship and Immigration Affairs member at the Canadian Parliament's standing committee Salma Zahid.
Moreover, High Commissioner-designate of Canada to Bangladesh Ajit Singh and Bangladesh High Commissioner to Canada Nahida Sobhan paid a courtesy call on the army chief, added the press release.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Bangladesh Army conducted the drive in Rangmahal area of Chakaria around 10:35am yesterday and arrested Kamal.
During primary interrogation, the arrestee admitted his involvement in the killing, the release added.
Lt Tanjim, 23, was stabbed to death during a drive to prevent a robbery in the upazila in the early hours of September 24.
Later, the army filed a case with Chakaria Police Station in this connection.
With the latest arrest, a total of 12 people have been arrested in connection with the murder. Three of them directly took part in the killing, the release said.
The army will continue to conduct operations to arrest the other robbers involved in the killing, the ISPR statement added.
Born in Tangail, Tanjim was a student of Pabna Cadet College. He was commissioned in the Army Service Corps from the Bangladesh Military Academy on June 8, 2022, after completing the 82nd Long Course.

The July-August uprising and the role of the military have opened a new dimension of involvement and challenges to support the interim government of Bangladesh.
As we look forward to the future, the army’s continued contributions will be crucial in ensuring national integrity, stability and prosperity. The next decades will call for the army to further redefine its role to meet modern challenges while it remains true to commitments regarding democracy and civil rights. The challenges of the modernisation of military and development will always require practical debates and ensure aspiration of people for the national interest and security.
Historical context and evolution
EMERGING from the struggle for independence in 1971, the army has shown a remarkable adaptability over the decades, evolving to meet changing national and global scenarios. In a nation of 170 million people, the army’s role extends beyond defence to nation-building and governance and fostering a stable democratic environment. The July-August uprising and the role of the military have opened a new dimension of involvement and challenges to support the interim government of Bangladesh.
As we look forward to the future, the army’s continued contributions will be crucial in ensuring national integrity, stability and prosperity. The next decades will call for the army to further redefine its role to meet modern challenges while it remains true to commitments regarding democracy and civil rights. The challenges of the modernisation of military and development will always require practical debates and ensure aspiration of people for the national interest and security.
Historical context and evolution
EMERGING from the struggle for independence in 1971, the army has shown a remarkable adaptability over the decades, evolving to meet changing national and global scenarios. Its expansion from national defence to peacekeeping, disaster management and infrastructure development underscores its ability to contribute significantly to nation-building and socio-economic development, reassuring us of its readiness to face future challenges. The army’s contribution has ranged from rebuilding after natural disasters to aiding national infrastructure projects such as the construction of the Padma bridge.
This shift from purely military functions to multi-faceted roles, including social face, has been crucial in reinforcing its position as a reliable institution in times of national need. The July-August uprising has changed the dynamics of the socio-political landscape and has created scopes for a new role of the army. We are still going through different critical national challenges which demand an active and passive role of the army for the development of national integration. Under the present situation, the involvement of retired army officers and men will be very crucial.
Infrastructure and socio-economic development
THE army has made significant strides in nation-building by participating in infrastructure projects and socio-economic initiatives. It has been actively involved in developing roads, bridges and public buildings, often stepping in when civilian agencies are overwhelmed or lack the capacity. The completion of large-scale projects such as the Padma bridge has underscored the army’s technical expertise and project management capabilities. Alongside its infrastructure projects, the army is deeply engaged in social welfare activities, providing healthcare services, education and emergency response during natural disasters.
Its presence in remote areas has helped to bridge the gap in services delivery, fostering a sense of community and contributing to equitable development and national unity. The army opens schools in far-flung areas and medical camps to meet the needs of civilians. Such efforts are essentially required for installing the spirit of access to service, specifically in areas that have conventionally been left behind in development. In addition, the army can be involved in agricultural development projects for better food security, which is quite important for a country continuously going through natural disasters and increasing population demands. Such initiatives may include farmer training in modern techniques and access to all essential resources that could directly affect rural livelihoods and contribute to building greater national economic resiliency.

During the visit, he laid the foundation stone of two residential buildings - ‘Senaneer’ and ‘Swapnachura’ - to be built in the Ramu Cantonment. These will help resolve the accommodation problem of Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), officers and army personnel of other ranks, said a release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) this evening.
Meanwhile, wife of army chief Begum Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman inaugurated ‘Proyash’, the specialised educational institution, at Ramu cantonment in Cox’s Bazar as the chief guest.
Besides, she unveiled the new plaque of ‘Shaheed Lieutenant Tanzim Cantonment Public School and College’, which was earlier named as ‘Ramu Cantonment Public School and College’
Shaheed Lieutenant Tanzim Sarower made his supreme sacrifice in the service of the motherland on September 24, 2024, which has become a bright example of patriotism, self-sacrifice and heroism for future generations, the release added.
Senior military officers of the Army Headquarters and Ramu Cantonment, family members of martyred Lt. Tanzim, JCOs, soldiers of other ranks, civil and military officers, employees, teachers and students of ‘Shaheed Lt. Tanzim Cantonment Public School and College’ also attended the ceremony.

Turkey delivers the first batch of Tiger Guided Multiple-Launch Rockets to Bangladesh
Turkish defense giant Roketsan has delivered the first regiment of its powerful TRG-300 series Tiger Guided Multiple-Launch Rocket (GMLRS) systems to the Bangladesh Army.
Photos of the shipment being transported by heavy equipment transporters (HETs) by road were snapped up by netizens in Bangladesh today.
Earlier in the year the Bangladesh Army Chief of Staff (CAS) General Aziz Ahmed disclosed the delivery of Turkish origin GMLRS and Chinese light tanks would be completed by the middle of the year.
The Bangladesh Army is in the midst of a large scale modernization that has witnessed procurement of military hardware from Europe, China and US.
In recent years Turkey has secured itself as one of the major defense equipment suppliers to the Bangladesh Army and Air Force. It is also trying to develop cooperation with the Bangladesh Navy, naval shipyards and the Bangladeshi defense industry.
Turkey's own defense industry export agency disclosed the country's arms manufacturers exported nearly $60 million of military hardware to Bangladesh in April 2021.
This is largely accounted for the sale of three regiments of Type B MLRS (Tiger Missile System). Each regiment includes 18 firing units and associated support vehicles.
The Tiger Missile System (Type B) is designed to hit potential targets such as artillery systems, air defense systems, radar sites, assembly areas, logistic facilities, C3 facilities and other high priority targets. It is combat proven and has the capability to function in all weather, terrain in day or night. The system is characterized by its high accuracy precision strike capability and anti-jamming functionality.
The 300mm diameter rockets have a warhead weight of up to 670 kg and effective radius of over 80 m. It is accurate to less than 10 m and its guidance is achieved by GPS, GNSS aided INS.
The Tiger missile system utilizes Russian Kamaz 65224 series 6×6 high-mobility chassis.
Turkey has exported this system to several other friendly nations already including Azerbaijan, which used it in combat.

‘The issues are regularly reviewed with other law enforcement agencies,’ said colonel-staff of military operation directorate under the army headquarters colonel Intekhab Haider Khan while briefing reporters at Dhaka Cantonment Thursday noon.
When his attention was drawn to secretariat fire, colonel Intekhab said that the incident just occurred, and they had yet to receive detailed information. However, the army was working on the security of important establishments.
In response to another question, he said that how long the army would serve in the field was a matter of the government’s decision. ‘The army is working to maintain law and order according to the government’s decision. Therefore, the army’s withdrawal depends on the government’s decision.’
He also said that the army had taken training to take pressure while maintaining law and order. However, the army was working in coordination with other law enforcement agencies to keep law and order.
In response to another question regarding security risk in the Cox's Bazar area, colonel Intekhab said that there was no threat to the sovereignty of the country of security at the moment.
‘The army in the area has always on alert. If there ever is a security threat, the army is ready to take action accordingly. Moreover, the Border Guard Bangladesh and Coast Guard and the law enforcement agencies are working on the Rohingya infiltration.’
When asked about the arson attack on Tripura community in Bandarban district, he said that the incident occurred due to a land dispute and no other reason.
‘Though incidents related to law and order has occurred there has been no deterioration. In this regard, the army is continuing to work in coordination with the police and others to keep the law and order situation tolerable,’ he said.
Earlier in a written statement, colonel Intekhab said that members of Bangladesh army had recovered 28 illegal fire arms and 424 rounds of ammunition, conducting drives across the country in the past one month since November 28.
During the period, the army played an active role in controlling 67 unstable situations and 13 main road blockades arising from such situations in various industrial areas of the country, mainly in Gazipur, Ashulia and Savar areas. In addition, they have been working to keep the factories running in coordination with all concerned, including the police, BGMEA, owners, workers and the concerned ministries. As a result, all but one of the country’s 2,093 garment factories are currently operational.
Apart from the industrial area, the army members have also controlled 45 different types of disorderly situations in the last one month. Of which five were related to educational institutions, three to government organisations/offices, seven were political conflicts and 30 were other types of incidents. In addition, on December 19, the army members provided direct assistance to the police in the attempted robbery at Rupali Bank in Keraniganj, which made it possible to quickly bring the incident under control without any incident.
Besides, 200 suspected drug dealers or people associated with drugs have been arrested in joint operations along with recovery of a good amount of illegal drugs, such as yaba, phensedyl, illegal liquor, etc. Around 1,405 people involved in various types of crimes were also arrested from different parts of the country during the joint drives.
The army personnel worked with law enforcement agencies and religious leaders to ensure that the recently concluded Christmas celebrations of Christians across the country. This year, 4,241 churches across the country celebrated Christmas without any incidents.
In addition to these tasks, the army is also continuously performing its duties of maintaining communal harmony in the country, ensuring the security of foreign diplomats and embassies, maintaining peace and order in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and providing security to the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals camp areas in Cox’s Bazar.

The online story, which is a series of 22 photos with captions claims, among other things, that the Pakistani army is set to arrive and train their Bangladesh counterparts, which the Inter Services Public Relations Department said was presenting "wrong and baseless information" about the Bangladesh army.
The online report titled, "Urdee-te Bangali Gonohotyar Rokter Chhite! 53 Bochhor Por Bangladesh-e Phirchhe Shei Porajito Pak Fouj" (which roughly translates to 'Uniforms bloodied in Bengali genocide! Defeated Pak army returns to Bangladesh after 53 years") paints a grim picture of Bangladesh, which the report claims is firmly falling into the grips of Pakistan claiming that a Pakistani major general is set to train Bangladeshi officers as Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus, who has been anti-Indian from the outset, is warming up to Pakistan.
The official mouthpiece of the defence forces of Bangladesh, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in its release that Bangladesh Army conducted itself with full professionalism and was a firm proponent of international cooperation. "As such Bangladesh military maintains cordial relationship with the armed forces of a number of countries."
The statement also points out that Bangladeshi armed forces have had regular exchange programmes with other armed forces so as to increase mutual cooperation and skills at the same time.
It should be mentioned that there is no plan for any Pakistani army unit to provide training at any cantonment of Bangladesh. "This claim is baseless and has no bearing with the facts."
Any uninformed, unsolicited, and objectionable opinions on sensitive defence matters are unwarranted, the ISPR said.
In violation of proper journalistic practices, the aforementioned newspaper did not seek any comments or clarification from Bangladesh's ISPR before publishing the report, it mentioned.
The Bangladesh Army is committed to ensuring transparency and providing accurate information, the press release said.

Chief of Army Staff General Wakar-Uz-Zaman has vowed to develop the Bangladesh Army into a well-trained, well-disciplined and modern force as he addressed the ‘President Parade’ at the Bhataiary BMA Parade Ground in Chattogram today, Tuesday.
The Army chief also asked the newly commissioned officers to be entrusted with the sacred responsibility of protecting the country's hard-earned independence and sovereignty by taking the oath.
The ‘President Parade’ was held on the occasion of commissioning the officer cadets of the 87th BMA Long Course and 59th Special Course of Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA) in Chattogram amid a colourful ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, the army chief thanked the Commandant of the Academy, all officers concerned , JCOs, NCOs, soldiers and civilian officials for making the programme a success, said a release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Tuesday evening.
The Chief of Army Staff inspected the parade and took salute in the “President Parade” event as the chief guest. He also distributed awards among meritorious cadets.
After three years of rigorous military training, a total of 213 officer cadets of 87th BMA Long Course and 14 officer cadets of 59th BMA Special Course and four trainee officers received commission in the Bangladesh Army through this wonderful parade.
There are 207 male and 24 female commissioned officers in the Bangladesh Army, the ISPR release mentioned.
Battalion Senior under Officer Abdullah Al Arafat of 87th BMA obtained the prestigious ‘Sword of Honour’ as the best cadet in the Long Course and the ‘Chief of the Army Gold Medal’ for his outstanding performance in the military affairs.
After the formal oath taken by the graduating cadets to protect the independence and sovereignty of the country, their parents and visiting guests also adorned the new officers with the rank-badges.
Earlier on his arrival at the BMA parade ground, the army chief was received by General Officer Commanding, Army Training and Doctrine Command, General Officer Commanding, 24 Infantry Division and Area Commander Chattogram Area and BMA Commandant.
Commandant of friendly country Sri Lankan Military Academy, local and foreign high military and civil officials, parents and guardians of newly commissioned officers and media personalities witnessed the colorful ‘President Parade’.

Police have submitted a charge sheet accusing 18 people in connection with the murder of army officer Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon in Chakaria's Dulahazara nearly four months after the incident.
Investigating officer Arup Kumar of Chakaria Police Station submitted the charge sheet this afternoon to the Senior Judicial Court Judge Anowarul Kabir in Chakaria, said plaintiff's lawyer Ahsan Sezan.
He said the court accepted the charge sheet after a review and issued arrest warrants against the accused who are absconding.
So far, 12 people have been arrested in connection with the case filed by the army with Chakaria Police Station following the incident on September 23.
According to an ISPR press release, the incident took place around 4:00am on September 23, when an army team responded to intelligence reports of a robbery in Purba Maizpara village of Dulahazara union. As the robbers tried to flee, Tanjim chased them. The robbers then attacked him, stabbing him in the neck and causing fatal injuries.
Tanjim was taken to Malumghat Memorial Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The army says it has not faced any significant challenges in maintaining law and order over the past six months, and it has been working in close coordination with the law enforcement agencies to ensure stability.
Col Shafiqul Islam, colonel staff of the Directorate of Military Operations at the Army Headquarters, made the remarks while providing updates on the efforts to ensure law and order at a press conference at the Officers' Mess in Dhaka Cantonment yesterday.
The briefing focused on 50 days' activities of the army from December 28 to February 16.
"In the current situation of the country, the army is working tirelessly to protect the nation's sovereignty, ensure the people's safety, and their properties, safeguard important state assets and installations, and maintain overall stability," Col Shafiqul said.
Pointing to an improvement in law and order, he said that incidents of mob justice, extortion, mugging, theft, and murder have significantly reduced.
Comparing the average data from the last two months with the previous two months, the army official said cases of extortion decreased from 250 to 110, that of theft from 850 to 600, and incidents of murder from 350 to 120. However, he did not provide any data on mob justice.
"Our operations are ongoing. We have identified certain hotspots and are keeping the areas under surveillance 24/7. The situation will further improve in the near future."
In joint drives over the last 50 days, 334 drug dealers or those involved in drug-related activities have been arrested, and a significant number of illegal drugs, including yaba pills and Phensedyl, have been seized, the army official said.
Overall, 2,142 individuals involved in various criminal activities have been arrested across the country during this period, Col Shafiqul said.
He added that 172 illegal weapons and 527 bullets were recovered during the period.
The army played an active role in controlling 88 incidents of unrest, including 30 road blockades, in various industrial zones like Gazipur, Ashulia, and Savar.
Col Shafiqul said that as a result, 2,097 garment factories in the country, except a few such as Beximco Group, Southern Designers Ltd, Shadhin Garments (Pvt) Ltd, and Self Innovative Fashion Ltd, are in operation.
Besides industrial areas, army personnel brought under control 42 different types of chaotic situations, of which, 14 were related to educational institutions, three to government agencies or offices, nine to political conflicts and 16 to other types of incidents.
In addition to maintaining law and order, the army has also arranged treatment for 3,859 individuals injured during movement by Students Against Discrimination. Of them, 41 are undergoing treatment in different CMHs.
When asked about the involvement of current and former army personnel in two robberies in Mohammadpur and Banani, Col Shafiqul described them as isolated and regrettable incidents. He assured that high-level investigation committees have been formed, and that active members of the army would be tried under military law, while former members would be tried under civilian law.
Asked about derogatory and negative comments about the army on social media by a few vloggers living abroad, Col Shafiqul said, "Everyone has the right to express their opinions on social media. We are not obstructing anyone from doing so. However, we leave it to you [people] to judge the opinions based on who is expressing it, why, and how much objectively they are expressing it."

The army says it has not faced any significant challenges in maintaining law and order over the past six months, and it has been working in close coordination with the law enforcement agencies to ensure stability.
Col Shafiqul Islam, colonel staff of the Directorate of Military Operations at the Army Headquarters, made the remarks while providing updates on the efforts to ensure law and order at a press conference at the Officers' Mess in Dhaka Cantonment yesterday.
The briefing focused on 50 days' activities of the army from December 28 to February 16.
"In the current situation of the country, the army is working tirelessly to protect the nation's sovereignty, ensure the people's safety, and their properties, safeguard important state assets and installations, and maintain overall stability," Col Shafiqul said.
Pointing to an improvement in law and order, he said that incidents of mob justice, extortion, mugging, theft, and murder have significantly reduced.
Comparing the average data from the last two months with the previous two months, the army official said cases of extortion decreased from 250 to 110, that of theft from 850 to 600, and incidents of murder from 350 to 120. However, he did not provide any data on mob justice.
"Our operations are ongoing. We have identified certain hotspots and are keeping the areas under surveillance 24/7. The situation will further improve in the near future."
In joint drives over the last 50 days, 334 drug dealers or those involved in drug-related activities have been arrested, and a significant number of illegal drugs, including yaba pills and Phensedyl, have been seized, the army official said.
Overall, 2,142 individuals involved in various criminal activities have been arrested across the country during this period, Col Shafiqul said.
He added that 172 illegal weapons and 527 bullets were recovered during the period.
The army played an active role in controlling 88 incidents of unrest, including 30 road blockades, in various industrial zones like Gazipur, Ashulia, and Savar.
Col Shafiqul said that as a result, 2,097 garment factories in the country, except a few such as Beximco Group, Southern Designers Ltd, Shadhin Garments (Pvt) Ltd, and Self Innovative Fashion Ltd, are in operation.
Besides industrial areas, army personnel brought under control 42 different types of chaotic situations, of which, 14 were related to educational institutions, three to government agencies or offices, nine to political conflicts and 16 to other types of incidents.
In addition to maintaining law and order, the army has also arranged treatment for 3,859 individuals injured during movement by Students Against Discrimination. Of them, 41 are undergoing treatment in different CMHs.
When asked about the involvement of current and former army personnel in two robberies in Mohammadpur and Banani, Col Shafiqul described them as isolated and regrettable incidents. He assured that high-level investigation committees have been formed, and that active members of the army would be tried under military law, while former members would be tried under civilian law.
Asked about derogatory and negative comments about the army on social media by a few vloggers living abroad, Col Shafiqul said, "Everyone has the right to express their opinions on social media. We are not obstructing anyone from doing so. However, we leave it to you [people] to judge the opinions based on who is expressing it, why, and how much objectively they are expressing it."

A monument was constructed under the supervision of the Border Guard Bangladesh, said a press release from the Inter Services Public Relation Directorate.
Sinha was shot dead at a police checkpoint in Baharchhara on July 31, 2020. The unarmed ex-army officer, who had served in the Special Security Force and as a UN peacekeeper in Ivory Coast, was killed in what was later determined to be an unlawful act by law enforcement personnel.
Born on July 26, 1984, in Chandpur's Faridganj, Major Sinha was the son of a freedom fighter. He joined the Bangladesh Army through the 51st BMA Long Course in 2003 and was commissioned on December 22, 2004. Known for his skill and dedication, he had a distinguished military career before taking early retirement.

An army personnel was killed in a road accident in Dhaka's Uttara area last evening.
The deceased is Md Nur Alam, a soldier in Dhaka's Army Aviation.
The incident occurred around 3:00pm on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in front of the Armed Police Battalion headquarters, according to police.
Sheik Rakibul Islam, inspector (investigation) of the Airport Police Station, quoting witnesses said Nur Alam was trying to cross the road when an unidentified vehicle hit him and he fell on the road. At that time, another vehicle ran over him.
He died on the spot.
His body was recovered and taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, after which army personnel transferred it to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
The vehicles involved in the accident have not yet been identified.
No arrests have been made so far.

The Bangladesh Army on Monday said that it did not receive any direct communication or intent from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the matter stated by UN human rights chief Volker Türk.
The Inter Services Public Relation Directorate clarified the Bangladesh Army’s position in a statement on Monday, five days after the OHCHR chief had told BBC’s HARDtalk programme that the regime change in Bangladesh came after they had warned the Bangladesh Army that if they got involved, they would not be a troop contributing country anymore in the UN peacekeeping missions.
‘As a result, we saw changes,” said Volker Türk in the interview while speaking about the Bangladesh regime change last year when Professor Muhammad Yunus took over as chief adviser of the interim administration.
He said that there was massive repression during the protest against the then Sheikh Hasina government.
Professor Muhammad Yunus assumed power on August 8, three days after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5, 2024 amid a student-led mass uprising.
‘If any such concerns were raised, they were conveyed to the erstwhile Government of Bangladesh and not directly to the army leadership. The Bangladesh Army operates within the framework of national security directives and adheres strictly to the rule of law and human rights principles,’ said the ISPR regarding the remarks by Volker Türk.
The ISPR said that Volker Türk’s remarks, taken out of context by certain quarters, appear to misrepresent the role of the Bangladesh Army and potentially undermine its reputation, sacrifice and professionalism.
The Bangladesh Army remained committed to people, upholding its legacy of neutrality and integrity, the ISPR statement read, adding that historical events, such as the democratic transition of 1991, reaffirm this dedication. During the July-August 2024 protests, the army once again stood by the people, ensuring public safety without bias or external influence.
‘As the second-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping, it is globally recognised for its professionalism and dedication. Notably, while peacekeepers receive a tiny portion of foreign earnings, the majority—around Tk 27,000 crore earned over 23 years—has significantly contributed to the national economic growth,’ said the ISPR statement.
It said that the Bangladesh Army deeply values its partnership with the OHCHR and remains steadfast in its commitment to serving both the people of Bangladesh and the global community.
The ISPR further said that any concerns regarding its role could be best addressed through open dialogue and constructive engagement.

In a statement on Tuesday, ISPR stated that Indian media outlets, notably The Economic Times and India Today, recently published baseless and fabricated reports about the possibility of a military coup in the country, amid a breakdown in the chain of command within the Bangladesh Army.
Expressing concern, ISPR said that these reports are entirely false and clearly part of a deliberate disinformation campaign aimed at undermining the stability of Bangladesh and damaging the reputation of its armed forces.
The statement emphasised that the Bangladesh Army is well-organised, united, and committed to performing its constitutional duties under the effective leadership of the Army chief.
It was also noted that The Economic Times has repeatedly published such fake news, raising serious questions about their motives and credibility. Additionally, several online portals and controversial television channels have joined in spreading these falsehoods, which the Bangladesh Army considers to be nothing more than an attempt to create confusion between the military and the public.
The statement urged Indian media to refrain from publishing unsubstantiated news. It also requested that these media outlets contact ISPR for proper comments and information before publishing reports related to the Bangladesh Army.

Army chief leaves Dhaka for Russia, Croatia
Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman left Bangladesh for Russia yesterday morning on an official visit.
Following his stay in Russia, Gen Waker will travel to Croatia on April 10, according to a press release from the Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate.
During the visit, he will hold courtesy meetings with senior military and civil officials of both the countries and exchange views on enhancing bilateral cooperation in defence and related sectors.
He is also expected to visit several military installations and arms-manufacturing facilities, the ISPR said.

The government and the Bangladesh Army are respectful towards the dignity and just demands of former army men and are committed to taking positive action in this regard, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
In a press release on Wednesday evening, the ISPR noted that the army headquarters has taken the former army members’ appeals to review the decision on their penalty with utmost importance.
According to the release, some former army personnel recently submitted appeals requesting reconsideration of disciplinary actions taken against them. Taking into account the humanitarian and administrative reality, a high-level council has already been formed to review these appeals. The council is now in operation.
As of now, a total of 802 applications have been received. Of these, 106 have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for final disposal, while the remaining 696 are undergoing verification and evaluation, the ISPR said.
Although the process is time-consuming, the Bangladesh Army is working in this regard, with “utmost sincerity and a strong sense of responsibility.”
There are provisions for due award and punishment as per the army act, to maintain military discipline. “The Bangladesh Army believes that every issue can be resolved peacefully through mutual respect, empathy, and adherence to due process,” it added.
In this context, the ISPR urged all concerned to refrain from engaging in any negative activities and advised patience, discipline, and tolerance in all situations.
Earlier on 7 May, a group of dismissed army personnel under the banner of ‘Shohojoddha’ held a press conference and placed three demands, including their reinstatement into service. They warned of launching a hunger strike along with their families if their demands were not met within seven working days.
Their demands are the immediate reinstatement of all personnel dismissed during the previous Awami League government, full financial and pension benefits for those who cannot be reinstated, and reforms to the British-era laws in the army.

Dismissed soldier Md Naimul Islam has been arrested on the charges of instigating sabotage and causing disorder, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) today, Saturday.
The ISPR said that since 5 August last year, Naimul had been collaborating with several other dismissed or discharged ex-military personnel to make provocative statements in the media and plot subversive activities.
"He planned a large-scale act of sabotage disguised as a protest rally at the entrance of Dhaka Cantonment on 18 May, and had been actively causing incitement through social media platforms," reads the statement.
To deter such disorderly conduct, a team from the army attempted to make contact with Naimul around 2:00 pm today in the Khilkhet Bott Tola Bazar area.
However, Naimul, along with several associates, allegedly launched a sudden attack with locally-made weapons on the military personnel present, said the ISPR.
A nearby army patrol team quickly intervened, leading to the arrest of Naimul and two of his associates, the statement added.
The ISPR also mentioned that Naimul had previously been dismissed from service due to multiple disciplinary violations, including allegations of demanding dowry from his wife, and committing both physical and mental abuse.
Legal proceedings are currently underway against him, it said.

China will be the first country the Bangladesh Army chief, General Waker-uz-Zaman, will visit by the end of June this year after making it clear to the Mohammad Yunus-led interim regime that there should be no “humanitarian corridor” to Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
While the details of his forthcoming visit to China are being worked out by different directorates within the Army, it is learnt that the Gen Zaman’s trip to Beijing will take place following a formal invitation from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Gen Zaman’s visit is aimed at greater defence hardware acquisitions from China, which has traditionally been the principal supplier of weapons and air assets to the Bangladesh Army and the Bangladesh Air Force. For this reason, the Bangladesh Army’s Directorate of Weaponry and Systems (DWE&S) is coordinating with other directorates on the visit.
Representatives of the directorates of Infantry, Army Aviation, Artillery, Signals, Ordnance, Engineers, Armoured, Military Operations, Military Operations, Military Intelligence and Military Training will meet at the DWE&S conference room to chalk out the details of Gen Zaman’s visit.
On May 13, Bangladesh Army’s Master General of Ordinance Branch Major General Abu Bakar Siddique Khan and other senior officers met a four-member team of executives of China Vanguard Co Ltd to discuss plans to acquire HQ-17AE surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), JSG radars and FK-3 medium-range-surface-to-air missiles (MSAMs).
It could not be confirmed whether Gen Zaman will sign agreements on the acquisition of the SAM and MSAM and JSG radars. Sources said that he will meet senior PLA officers and discuss avenues for greater defence cooperation between China and Bangladesh.
Exactly a year ago, Bangladesh and China held their first-ever joint military exercise ‘Golden Friendship-2024’, which aimed to fine-tune peacekeeping and counter-terrorism operations and involved mixed groups training on scenarios like anti-hijacking and camp elimination.
There were reports last year that China transferred various military technologies to Bangladesh, which is said to have started an initiative to build a domestic defence industrial base.
So far, Beijing’s technology transfer has been to the Bangladesh Ordnance Factories and Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory Ltd for small and medium-sized weapons such as rifles, rocket launchers, MANPADS (Man-Portable Air Defence Systems), and light utility vehicles.
In October 2024, the PLA sent two warships to the Chittagong port for a goodwill visit. However, China delivered to the Bangladesh Navy two Type 035G Ming-class diesel-electric submarines in 2016.
These submarines, originally commissioned by the Chinese Navy, were upgraded and retrofitted – at Dalian Liaoning South Shipyard – before being transferred to Bangladesh. The submarines, commissioned as BNS Nabajatra and BNS Joyjatra on March 12, 2017, are now based at Pekua, which is about 68 km south of Chittagong.
More recently, Bangladesh Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus’ March 2025 visit to China and his offer to his hosts to develop an old airbase at Lalmonirhat raised eyebrows in New Delhi. The Bangladesh Air Force is reportedly interested in procuring the China-made J-10C fighter aircraft or the JF-17 variant, though its senior management may not be averse to the Eurofighter that is manufactured by a consortium of European companies.

The briefing took place at the Officers' Mess in Dhaka Cantonment, where Brigadier General Md Nazim-Ud-Doula, Director of Military Operations, and Colonel Md Shafiqul Islam, Colonel Staff of the Directorate of Military Operations, spoke on national security and other current issues.
In response to a question about the proposal of a humanitarian corridor in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, Colonel Md Shafiqul Islam said, “The army will not be involved in any activity that compromises the country’s security.”
Addressing concerns raised by media reports about big disagreements between the government and the military, Brigadier General Nazim-Ud-Doula said, “There’s been speculation that there are serious differences between the government and the military. The way it’s being portrayed in the media is not accurate. We are working harmoniously and in mutual understanding. There is no room for misinterpretation.”
Calling on the public to view these matters with a calm and simple perspective, he added: “We should not assume the government and military are operating in conflict or thinking separately. That is not the case. The government and military are working together, and we strongly believe this cooperation will continue in the future.”
According to the Army Headquarters, in the last 40 days, the army has recovered 241 illegal firearms, 709 rounds of ammunition and since last August, a total of 9,611 illegal firearms and 285,761 rounds of ammunition have been seized.
In the past one month alone, 1,969 individuals involved in various crimes were arrested. In total, 14,266 people have been apprehended so far, including members of juvenile gangs, listed criminals, kidnappers, smugglers, fraudsters, syndicates, extortionists, robbers and muggers.
It was also said in the briefing that in the past 40 days, 487 drug dealers were arrested in joint operations and since August, 4,400 individuals involved in drug-related crimes have been apprehended. A large quantity of illegal drugs was recovered, including yaba, Phensedyl, cannabis, and illegal alcohol, helping restore peace and safety in affected communities.
During the briefing, officials discussed special measures for managing traffic during Eid-ul-Azha. To ensure smooth and secure travel for holiday-goers, the Bangladesh Army will run a two-week special operation before and after Eid.
Key actions include round-the-clock patrols at major highways, bus terminals, rail stations and launch terminals and establishing checkposts at key points to control speeding, preventing black market ticket sales, running awareness campaigns to ensure public safety. These efforts aim to ensure a peaceful and safe Eid for all, similar to previous Eid-ul-Fitr operations.
Regarding concerns around livestock markets during Eid-ul-Azha, the army said that these markets often become hotspots for extortion and robbery. Markets located on main roads cause traffic jams and public inconvenience.
The army will conduct regular patrols and special operations to prevent criminal activities and ensure public safety at the markets.

The article by Northeast News is a clear example of deliberate disinformation propagated by segments of the Indian media seeking to destabilise Bangladesh’s internal cohesion and undermine its armed forces, says a press release of Inter Services Public Relations.
“The insinuation that the Bangladesh Army supports insurgent actors, is not only baseless but malicious. Such speculative reporting, devoid of evidence, reflects a broader agenda to sow discord and mislead the public,” says the ISPR.
“The Bangladesh Army has always upheld the highest standards of professionalism and remains resolutely committed to protecting the nation’s sovereignty, integrity, and constitutional order. There will be no compromise on national interest—now or ever. This narrative is not journalism; it is part of a sustained smear campaign. Khalilur Rahman will be accompanied by Siraz Uddin Miah, Principal Secretary to Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus. The duo will be in China between June 27 and 29, once the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit ends.
Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Khalilur Rahman and Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus’ Principal Secretary Mohammad Siraz Uddin Miah will visit China on June 27, the very day that the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s meeting at Qingdao ends, Northeast News has reliably learnt.
Khalilur Rahman, who is currently in the United States, will be in China till June 29 and is expected to have “consultations” on Dhaka-Beijing cooperation.
What is, however, surprising is that Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman’s visit to Beijing now stands cancelled. Gen Zaman was invited to visit China by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) top brass.
Indian Defence Minister Rajnath and NSA Ajit Doval will reach Qingdao on June 25 to attend the SCO defence ministers’ meeting, which will be attended by his Pakistani counterpart, Khwaja Asif. However, it is unlikely that Singh and Asif will meet, considering the level of hostility between New Delhi and Islamabad in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor.
Singh may meet China’s Defence Minister, Admiral Dong Jun, on the sidelines of the SCO summit.
There is no official word on whether the Indian and Bangladeshi NSAs will meet before the departure of the former to New Delhi.
However, Khalilur Rahman’s visit is being seen by Bangladeshi strategic analysts as important as he is expected to discuss the now-aborted “humanitarian corridor” issue. Conceived by the United Nations, the “humanitarian corridor” was to be close to the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.
Khalilur Rahman, who has been maintaining clandestine ties with the Arakan Army leadership, had earlier strongly advocated the use of the “humanitarian corridor” supposedly for sending humanitarian assistance to the Rakhine State. But he had to abandon the proposed “humanitarian corridor” plan in the face of strong objections and disapproval by the Bangladesh Army in general and Gen Waker-uz-Zaman in particular.
