The Rapid Action Battalion will fully cooperate with the International Crimes Tribunal if it seeks information on ‘crossfire’ incidents, said its newly appointed director general Md Ahsan Habib Palash.

Responding to a question at a views exchange event with journalists at the RAB Media Centre in the capital Dhaka on Sunday, Palash said, ‘If our cooperation is sought regarding any matter related to the [tribunal’s] judicial process, we will provide full assistance. We will provide whatever information we have.’City & Local Guides

On March 31, ICT chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said that the tribunal would investigate incidents of ‘crossfire’ that had taken place since 2007.

On January 4, the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, formed by the past interim government, submitted its final report to the government with a recommendation for disbanding the elite force citing its alleged human rights violations, including ‘crossfire’ incidents since its establishment in 2004.

Responding to another question, Palash said that any decision on restructuring, reforming and disbanding the force depended on the government.

He, however, stressed the necessity of a force like the RAB, saying, ‘I actually think that such an organisation [RAB] is necessary.’

Addressing an allegation that the RAB was used politically in the past, Palash said that the force proved in the past one and a half years that it could function properly if it was managed correctly.

‘I think that the government is trying to involve us in constructive work and I hope that the RAB will be guided correctly. We have already received certain directives from the government in this regard,’ he mentioned.

On December 10, 2021, the United States Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the RAB for human rights abuses.

Asked about the issue, Palash said that if anyone reviewed the time frame and reasons for the incidents since the formation of the RAB, they would see that those occurred due to certain ‘deviations and slips’.

‘If we can repair those, I think that the imposed sanctions will not be there,’ he hoped.

The DG also mentioned that the elite force was aware about the resurgence of pirates in the Sunderbans, extremist groups in char areas in Sirajganj and teenage gangs across the country and the force was extensively working on the issues.
