Coldplay’s India tour ended with a bang, as the British rock band performed two sold-out shows at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad over the weekend. The concerts, attended by over 1.3 lakh fans on January 26, left an indelible mark, with attendees and social media users alike calling it a show to remember.

Mumbai vs Ahmedabad: Fans Draw Comparisons

While the tour began with three concerts in Mumbai, including back-to-back shows at DY Patil Sports Stadium, many fans felt the Ahmedabad leg was far superior. A fan who attended all three shows wrote, “I attended three shows on this tour—two in Mumbai and one in Ahmedabad. The Ahmedabad show was the clear winner in scale, energy, and organisation.”

Another user added, “Seems like Coldplay concert in Ahmedabad had a much better vibe than the Mumbai one.”

Some fans praised the infrastructure and management, saying, “The lights, infrastructure, and crowd are perfectly syncing with the vibe. Not far when artists will prefer this venue over others after this concert.”

One attendee tweeted, “Glad I didn’t get Mumbai tickets. Scale of Ahmedabad very tough to match. Truly magical.”

The event wasn’t just about music; fans on social media reacted to every element of the experience. A fan quipped, “Ahmedabad mogged Mumbai crowd. Insane vibes lol.”

Another wrote, “India does have world-class infrastructure for live concerts; you just need good team management!”

The concert also caught the attention of prominent personalities. Business tycoon Anand Mahindra shared a clip from the show, calling it a turning point for India’s live entertainment scene. “The world discovered that India is the new frontier of live entertainment… Coldplay. Ahmedabad,” Mahindra tweeted.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw lauded the event’s global benchmark, while Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi praised the state police and event organisers for smooth logistics.

The Ahmedabad concert featured stunning visuals, pyrotechnics, and LED wristbands that turned the stadium into a glowing sea of light. Coldplay thrilled fans with hits like Yellow, Viva La Vida, and My Universe.

Adding a patriotic touch, Chris Martin performed Vande Mataram and Maa Tujhe Salaam on the piano. Cricket star Jasprit Bumrah’s surprise appearance and Martin’s shoutout to him sent fans into a frenzy.

The Coldplay concert in Ahmedabad drew massive crowds to the Narendra Modi Stadium for an unforgettable night of music. However, the excitement came with some unexpected hurdles for attendees, including a spike in hotel prices throughout the city. Mumbai resident Prayush Jain took to Threads to share his experience after facing a last-minute hotel booking cancellation. Despite planning his trip months in advance and securing a reservation through the popular travel platform Agoda, Jain was shocked to find out just 24 hours before check-in that his booking had been cancelled.

In his post, Jain explained that he initially booked the accommodation in November, the same day Coldplay tickets went on sale. Agoda showed no signs of cancellation until he personally contacted the hotel to confirm his stay. The hotel informed him that the booking had been cancelled and a refund would be issued.

“We booked the hotel in Ahmedabad via Agoda for Coldplay in November when the tickets came on the same day. On the Agoda until today 24 hours before checking in, it did not show that the booking was cancelled. I called the hotel to confirm the booking, and the hotel said they have cancelled the booking and Agoda will refund the money," Jain wrote on Threads.

Later, Jain reached out to Agoda but he was left disappointed with their response. While the company assured him of a refund, they provided no further assistance. Jain expressed frustration over the lack of accountability and pointed out that booking a new room would cost him five times the original price.

“We called Agoda to address this issue, and it was hilarious for us to hear their words. They said, we would refund the amount, and we cannot do anything more than that. No accountability nothing. Agoda is this how you do business and that’s how you partner with hotels? It is not about the refund, but you are canceling just 1 day before checking in. The hotel is asking me to pay 5 times the booking price to provide room," Jain wrote in his post.

In the comment section, many users shared their similar experiences with the platform.

One user commented, “Oh my god the same happened with me while attending a conference in Bangalore. Agoda showed zero responsibility and countless hours later I was left stranded in a new city. I had to pay 3 times the amount to get a room in the hotel nearby. *&*&*&*& behaviour."

“Same experience with two hotels in Mumbai (for Coldplay). Agoda and Agoda India absolutely no support or quality control," another shared.

Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour wrapped up its India leg with a spectacular performance in Ahmedabad on January 26. Following their electrifying shows in India, the band—Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion—will now head to Hong Kong, South Korea, the US, and Canada. The tour is set to conclude at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium on September 8.

Coldplay fans from all across the country descended upon Ahmedabad over the weekend to attend the band’s concert on January 25 and 26, and many were surprised by the city’s infrastructure. In fact, the city earned rave reviews on social media for hosting two Coldplay concerts in two days.

Here are five things you should know about the Ahmedabad real estate market and the infrastructure growth in the city.

1) Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat

Ahmedabad is traditionally known for its rich culture and heritage. It is also an industrial and manufacturing hub with businesses rooted in textiles, chemicals and petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and automobiles.

According to real estate consultant ANAROCK, Ahmedabad is the seventh-largest metropolis in India and the largest in Gujarat. In the 19th century, the construction of railways and textile mills began an economic boom that established it as an important trade and commercial centre in the country.

The population of Ahmedabad is over 88 lakh and the per capita income is ₹4.04 lakh, and the city contributes around 20% to the GDP of Gujarat, according to Colliers India, a real estate consultancy firm

Ahmedabad has several companies, such as TCS, IBM, Capgemini, Amazon, Wipro, etc.

2) Ahmedabad’s bullet train project

The Ahmedabad to Mumbai Bullet train project is being constructed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). The NHSRCL, in December 2024, had commenced the critical phase of rail welding for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project in Gujarat, marking the final stage before track laying for the 508-kilometre route designed for speeds of 320 kilometres per hour, according to a report by HT.com

The bullet train route is expected to have 12 stations starting from Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

3) Land prices boom in Ahmedabad

Land prices, particularly at Shela in the western outskirts of Ahmedabad, have risen from ₹2,000 per sq ft to around ₹7,500 per sq ft and are expected to go above ₹17,000 per sq ft by 2035, according to Colliers India.

Ahmedabad was featured last week on India's list of top 30 emerging cities with rising land and real estate prices. According to Colliers India, land prices in the micro markets of Ahmedabad have been on an upward trajectory. Prices have been increasing because of initiatives like the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, Dholera SIR, and Smart City initiatives.

4) Residential capital and rental values in Ahmedabad

According to ANAROCK data, the Ahmedabad real estate market sells around 40,000 units annually, and the supply is around the same.

Out of the total supply, around 80% is in the affordable and mid-segment range, followed by high-end and luxury. According to the ANAROCK data, apartments up to ₹40 lakh are considered to be in the affordable range in Ahmedabad. The mid-segment is between ₹40 lakh and ₹80 lakh. The high-end segment is ₹80 lakh to ₹1.50 crore. ₹1.50 to ₹2.50 crore is considered a luxury, and all apartments above ₹2.50 are in the ultra-luxury segment.

According to an ANAROCK report, the average per sq ft rate of apartments in Ahmedabad was ₹6,000 as of July 2024. Typical 1,2 and 3 BHK apartments are available in the range of ₹5,000 to ₹40,000, depending on the area and several other factors, according to local brokers.

5) Ahmedabad’s proximity to GIFT city

Gift City, also known as Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

The Gift City is spread over 880 acres and includes a special economic zone (SEZ). GIFT City is broadly divided into an SEZ with financial institutions and banks and a non-SEZ area with commercial office spaces and residential buildings. Property consultants say around 30% of the total 880 acres is operational, and around 30% of the total area is reserved for residential projects.

According to ANAROCK, property prices in GIFT City have increased by almost 74% in the last five years. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, land prices in the area were around ₹4,300 per sq ft and increased to ₹7,500 per sq ft by the end of Q1 2024.

Residential rentals have also jumped by 40% from ₹25,000 per month to ₹35,000 per month as of Q1 2024. Commercial office space rentals in GIFT City have seen a 32% increase, while residential capital values have risen by 74%—from ₹4,700 per sq ft in 2019 to nearly ₹8,200 per sq ft by Q1 2024.

Coldplay Ahmedabad goes big!

Coldplay Ahmedabad goes big!
Move over, Bieber – Coldplay just rewrote the rulebook for concerts in India! The British rock legends lit up Ahmedabad on Republic Day (January 26, 2035) like never before, pulling off the biggest concert in the country’s history. That’s right, the “Beliebers" are going to have to sit this one out because Coldplay’s Ahmedabad stop smashed the attendance record.

Coldplay held a total of five gigs in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. On Monday, January 27, the band shared on X (formerly Twitter) that their final concert in Ahmedabad saw 1,34,000 people in attendance live. With this, Coldplay becomes the largest ticketed concert in India ever. Before this, this title was held by singers Diljit Dosanjh and Justin Bieber, with 50,000 people in attendance.

With a crowd so massive it could probably be seen from space, the band turned Narendra Modi Stadium into a galaxy of lights (and loud cheers). Fans sang along to every hit, from Fix You to Viva La Vida, waving their glowing wristbands and screaming their lungs out.

Chris Martin-led Coldplay performed five shows in India as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour. The first three gigs were in Mumbai followed by two shows in Ahmedabad.

Interestingly, this is the biggest concert ever for Coldplay as well. It surpassed the 83,000 mark from their Sydney gig in November last year.

It should be noted that the Narendra Modi Stadium is a cricket ground with a seating capacity of over a lakh in the stands alone. Apart from that, there were fans on the ground as well which made the band have an audience of about 1.4 lakh for the concert.

Meanwhile, both Diljit Dosanjh and Justin Bieber had performed in much smaller stadiums. The latter’s gig was held at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai in 2017. On the other hand, Diljit had 50,000 people attending his concert at Sector 34 Ground in Chandigarh in December 2024 as part of the Dil-Luminati Tour.

Even your cities have Islamic names.

Ahmedabad, the largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat, was historically known as Karnavati before it was renamed by Sultan Ahmed Shah in the 15th century. The city has a rich and vibrant history, and its previous name, Karnavati, holds significant cultural and historical importance.

Some folks are trying to change the name back to the Hindu name, and given enough momentum, it might happen.
