PM’s defence adviser, Indian high commissioner discuss boosting defence ties

Two sides also discussed training and regional security

Bangladesh and India today discussed ways to deepen defence cooperation and strengthen military ties during a meeting between Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brig Gen (retd) AKM Shamsul Islam and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) disclosed the development in a release. The two sides also discussed expanding training collaboration.

The meeting was held at the Armed Forces Division in Dhaka Cantonment, reads the release.

A four-member delegation led by the Indian high commissioner called on Shamsul at his office. During the meeting, the two sides discussed the existing military relationship between the two countries and the prospects for further progress in the future, the release added.​

Bangladesh on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to promoting closer cooperation with Türkiye in defence, security, technology, research, and institutional capacity building through continued dialogue and knowledge exchange.

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Ankara hosted a high-level "strategic consultative"

session titled "Strengthening Bangladesh-Türkiye Defence Cooperation."

The session was chaired by M Amanul Haq, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Türkiye, and anchored by Brigadier General Mohammed Iftequr Rahman, Defence Attache.

The discussion featured two experts: Professor Hasan Unal of Baskent University and Dr Ahmed Dolan, CEO of Sigma International and Founder of the Diplomatic Club Ankara.

The interactive session explored strategic pathways for enhancing Bangladesh-Türkiye defence cooperation, including capacity building for security and defence, strengthening bilateral collaboration, fostering public-private partnerships, promoting private sector engagement in defence industries, and harnessing the talents of young engineers, researchers, and innovators.

The experts shared valuable insights into Türkiye’s remarkable journey in developing a strong and self-reliant defence industry, highlighting the importance of long-term strategic planning, investment in human capital, technology development, international collaboration, reverse engineering, and indigenous innovation.

The programme also included a discussion on the research questionnaire prepared by participants from the National Defence Course, National Defence College (NDC), Bangladesh, who are conducting research on Bangladesh-Türkiye defence cooperation strategies.

The discussion is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening their research by providing valuable expert insights and practical recommendations.

This discussion generated an engaging exchange of ideas with the experts and it would play pivotal role in their research findings.

The recommendations offered during the session are expected to contribute to the

formulation of more effective strategies for enhancing Bangladesh-Türkiye defence cooperation and strengthening Bangladesh's overall defence and security capacity.​
 

Bangladesh’s National Defence College delegation visits US, discusses regional security

A 24-member delegation of Bangladesh’s National Defence College visited the US for one week and held discussions on bilateral relations, regional security, defence and military cooperation.

The delegation met a series of US officials and representatives of financial institutions during its visit from September 9 to 18, according to a statement from the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington.

Defence attaché Brig Gen Mohammad Monwar Hossain Khan and minister consular Mahbubur Rahman of the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, DC, welcomed the delegation at Dulles International Airport.

The delegation visited prominent governmental, military and international institutions, including the US Department of State, the Pentagon, the National Defense University, the World Bank-IMF and UN headquarters, and exchanged views with senior officials.

The visit was part of the training for the ‘National Defence Course 2026’ organised by the National Defence College.

Lieutenant General Md Faizur Rahman, commandant of the National Defence College, led the delegation.

As one of the key events of the tour, the delegation visited the US Department of State on September 11.

Paul Kapoor, assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian Affairs, welcomed the delegation and held an exchange of views with its members.

They discussed bilateral relations, regional security, defence and military cooperation, and matters of mutual interest.

On September 14, the delegation visited the Pentagon, where Rear Admiral Stephen Aldridge, deputy director of politico-military affairs (Asia), and Jay Wise, director for South Asia (Policy), welcomed them.

They discussed Bangladesh-US defence ties, military cooperation, the regional security environment, defence policy and future avenues of collaboration.

Following its visit to the Pentagon, the delegation visited the Embassy of Bangladesh in Washington, DC.

Bangladesh ambassador to the US Tareq Mohammad Ariful Islam briefed the delegation on the activities and operations of the embassy.

An interactive meeting was also held between the delegation and embassy officials.

On September 15, the delegation visited the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Neelkanth Mishra, executive director, and Md Abdur Rahman Khan, alternate executive director, received the delegation at the World Bank.

Officials from the World Bank Group and the IMF were present and briefed the delegation on the activities of their respective institutions.

They discussed Bangladesh’s economic development, its engagement with international financial institutions, development cooperation and the global economic situation.

Towards the end of their stay in Washington, DC, the delegation visited the National Defense University and the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies.

Ambassador Roxanne Cabral, senior vice president of NDU, and Ambassador John Desrocher, director of the NESA Center, welcomed them.

Delegation leader Lt Gen Md Faizur Rahman and senior directing staff Air Vice Marshal Md Shafiqul Islam held formal meetings with the leadership of NDU and the NESA Center.

Later, the delegation attended the ‘Speaker Series’ organised by the NESA Center, which covered strategic security, regional geopolitics, defence education, leadership development and contemporary international security affairs.

On September 16, the NDC delegation visited UN Headquarters in New York.

Brig Gen Yakhya Diop, chief of staff of the Office of Military Affairs within the Department of Peace Operations, provided a detailed briefing on UN peacekeeping operations across various field missions.

It then visited the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN in New York, where it was briefed on the mission’s role, as well as Bangladesh’s major contributions and challenges in UN peacekeeping missions.

Irene Khan, ambassador and permanent representative of Bangladesh to the UN, interacted with the delegation and highlighted key aspects of Bangladesh’s involvement in UN activities.

The delegation is scheduled to depart for Bangladesh on Friday.​
 

Seoul welcomes Dhaka's interest in strengthening defence ties

South Korea has appreciated Bangladesh's interest in strengthening bilateral defence relations and expressed readiness to explore opportunities for greater cooperation in mutually agreed areas, including training, capacity-building and peacekeeping.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir held separate meetings with Korean First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Yoon-joo and Vice Minister of National Defence Lee Doo-hee in Seoul on Friday, discussing issues of mutual interest with particular focus on political and economic cooperation.

The meetings reaffirmed the shared commitment of Bangladesh and the Republic of Korea to further consolidate their long-standing partnership and expand cooperation for mutual benefit, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

With Vice Minister Park, the state minister conveyed Bangladesh's readiness to work closely with the Korean government to deepen long-standing friendly relations.

He handed over an invitation letter from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to the South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time.

Kobir appreciated Korea's remarkable transformation into a global economic and technological leader, noting its development experience continues to inspire Bangladesh.

He expressed satisfaction at regular Foreign Office Consultations and other high-level exchanges, and reaffirmed Bangladesh's support for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The state minister welcomed progress towards concluding the Bangladesh-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and hoped for its early signing.

He called for greater bilateral trade and investment, enhanced market access for Bangladeshi products, and increased Korean investment in semiconductors, electronics, shipbuilding, light engineering, high-end ready-made garments, ICT and other technology-intensive sectors.

Kobir also highlighted opportunities in agriculture, agro-processing, logistics, digital transformation, skills development and services, seeking Korean support for greater employment opportunities for Bangladeshi skilled and semi-skilled workers through the Employment Permit System.

Appreciating Korea's development partnership, he sought enhanced cooperation in climate resilience, infrastructure, human-resource development, technical and vocational education and digital technologies.

The state minister expressed appreciation for Korea's humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas and sought continued support for their early and sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues, reaffirming the importance of cooperation in multilateral fora.

During the meeting with Korean Vice Minister for National Defence Lee, the two sides discussed further strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, including training, capacity-building, UN peacekeeping and defence industry cooperation.

Kobir appreciated Korea's cooperation in training and capacity-building of Bangladesh's armed forces, police and civil defence personnel, and requested continued and expanded opportunities for specialised training.

He also encouraged the Korean side to send military personnel to participate in specialised courses offered by the Bangladesh Armed Forces.

The state minister informed the Korean side that Bangladesh is in the process of establishing a defence industrial zone and invited Korean interest in exploring investment opportunities in the initiative, with a view to promoting technology, industrial cooperation and mutual economic benefits.​
