Jamaat, allies threaten street movement if constitution reform council session not convened

The alliance led by the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday called on the Bangladesh National Party-led government to convene today a session for the Constitutional Reform Council to implement the July National Charter or else, the alliance said, they would wage a street movement.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the alliance liaison committee at the Jamaat central office at Mogbazar on Saturday.

After the meeting, Jamaat central leader Hamidur Rahman Azad said that the government must convene a session for the Constitution Reform Council by today, or else they would wage a movement for implementing the reforms.

Hamidur Rahman said that a referendum along with the Jatiya Sangsad election was held on February 12 for the implementation of the July Charter and 70 per cent of the voters had voted for ‘yes’ in favour of the implementation of the July Charter.

So, two separate sessions — one for the Jatiya Sangsad and the other for the Constitution Reform Council — must be convened, but the BNP-led government had convened only the JS session, Hamidur Rahman Azad resented.

The BNP MPs did not take the oath as members of the Constitution Reform Council according to their party decision.

‘Before the Jatiya Sangsad election they took a stand in favour of the referendum, but now they oppose it, which is a ‘U turn’ betraying the people, Hamidur Rahman Azad said, criticising the ruling party’s decision taken at the eleventh hour not to take the oath for the reform council.

He said that they had been anxious so far for not convening the session for the reform council while according to the provision it should be convened within 30 days of the election being today the last date for convening the session.

Leader of the House and prime minister Tareque Rahman must take the responsibility if the session was not convened, he affirmed.

Hamidur said that they would hold a meeting with the top leaders of the alliance partners on March 28 and the movement programmes would be announced after the meeting.

Alliance liaison committee members Ahmed Abdul Kader, Mostafizur Rahman Iran, Maulana Jalaluddin, Rashed Prodhan, and others attended the press briefing.

A total of 297 newly-elected representatives to the 13th Jatiya Sangsad of Bangladesh were sworn in as Members of Parliament on Tuesday.

Under the Implementation Order of the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) 2025, the MPs were also required to take a further oath as members of the Constitution Reform Council.

However, 212 MPs elected under the banner of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and as seven independent candidates did not take the additional oath.

In contrast, 77 MPs elected from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies were sworn in both as Members of Parliament and members of the Constitution Reform Council.
