A political consensus must be reached to decide whether the Awami League will be allowed to participate in the next elections or not, said Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur today.

"The government also has to play a role here. The Election Commission alone cannot take the decision regarding the matter," Nur told reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the EC office.

"A kind of consensus among political parties has already been established during the last meeting with the chief adviser. Political parties also agreed that the Awami League and its allies should be able to participate in the elections," he said.

Asked, Nur said that his party believed that the national election should take place first.

"However, small-scale local elections can be held before the national election, because people are not receiving services like birth registration. How much [work] can a single bureaucrat do? At least the elections of city corporations, municipalities, or upazilas can be held," he added.
