Bangladesh must not give India train transit

During Sheikh Hasina's recent Delhi visit, a significant development took place that might throw Bangladesh's national security under the proverbial bus.

Dhaka, in principle, has agreed to the Indian Railways' proposal of using rail transit through Bangladesh. If it becomes functional, Indian trains will run between Sealdah and Haldibari of West Bengal through Bangladesh. This is an unprecedented measure as, at no point in Bangladesh's history, has a transit of this kind been given to a foreign entity.

A report published by The Times of India on Sunday confirms Indian intentions. The plan is to connect India's restive northeastern states with the rest of the country. These provinces, known as the seven sisters, can be called an exclave as they are connected to the mainland through a narrow 22km-wide strip of land that is sandwiched between Bangladesh and Nepal.

Currently, Bangladesh Railway is connected to the Indian Railway network at five operational interchange points. But no Indian train passes through Bangladesh's sovereign land.

Giving train transit to India is alarming on many counts. We still do not know if these trains will transport only civilian goods. There is a risk that India will ship military personnel and hardware through Bangladesh. This will put Bangladesh at loggerheads with China, especially in a region close to Doklam where China and India fought hand-to-hand combat not long ago.

Should a war break out between China and India, these trains carrying military hardware will become legitimate targets. Not only that, but it will also force Bangladesh to get embroiled in a conflict that is hardly related to its national security. China-India skirmishes are not Bangladesh's headache; they have never been so and they should not be made into one in the future.

Giving rail transit will witness the end of Bangladesh's geopolitical neutrality, and the country will be seen as a military-strategic ally of India. This will not bode well for Dhaka's future partnership with Beijing. In simple terms, Bangladesh will be seen as taking sides with Delhi in the ongoing geo-strategic tussle that is fought on many fronts between India and China.


Not only that, but giving train transit to India in a volatile and restive region is not a good idea at all. Not long ago, in 1931, Japan launched a false flag operation in Mukden, north-central China. On September 18, 1931, Japanese Army Lieutenant Suemori Kawamoto detonated some dynamite close to the Japan-owned South Manchuria Railway. The idea was to blame Chinese dissidents who were fighting the Japanese Army. Japan used this as an excuse to make a full invasion and the eventual Japanese occupation of Manchuria that established a Japanese puppet state in the region.

Apart from this kind of risk, it is not understandable why Bangladesh would want to give India such benefits while Indian security forces routinely kill ordinary Bangladeshis on its border. These are crimes against humanity. Crossing the border illegally is not punishable by death in the eyes of the law of any civilized society. These incidents have become so rampant that they have even grabbed the attention of international human rights organizations. They are widely published and India, at the height of its arrogance, does not even care to apologize for carrying out these murders.

Not only that, but Indian ruling party's prominent politicians regularly belittle Bangladeshis and use inhumane metaphors to describe them. Only six years ago, in an election rally, India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah called the so-called illegal Bangladeshis 'terrorists' and 'termites'. Racist and xenophobic as his comments are, the irony, however, does not escape us—thousands of Indians illegally work in Bangladesh on visit visas in the country's burgeoning industrial sector. This has given birth to brewing social tension in Bangladesh where the local graduates see their jobs robbed by illegal Indian immigrants.

To make matters sad to tragic, India is the country that has been forever dilly-dallying when it comes to signing the Teesta Treaty. India's big-brotherly attitude has led to protests and discontent in Bangladesh. A Boycott India Movement is thought to be gaining momentum. In view of this situation, why Dhaka has agreed to the train transit proposal is befuddling to many.

The Awami League government should move away from this disastrous decision. Bangladesh's national security is not up for sale.

Giving rail corridor to India suicidal: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday said that prime minister Sheikh Hasina included Bangladesh in the Indian 'quorum' through an agreement with India, saying that it is suicidal for Bangladesh to give rail corridor facilities to India.

'Railway facilities through Bangladesh and similar deals are a threat to the independence of our country,' BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference at the party chairperson's Gulshan office.

He said that the agreements, made under the guise of reconciliation with India, would make Bangladesh a subservient to India for life.

'As a result, the national security of Bangladesh has been threatened,' he said, adding that the people will not accept such an agreement which has been involved in the conspiracy of creating a deep trap of India's slavery agreement for a long time.

Fakhrul termed the recent agreements and understandings between Bangladesh and India as a 'new version of slavery'.

He said that the agreements of the prime minister's visit to India are the new version of Awami League's continuous slavery. 'The corridors being given in the name of connectivity and rail communication will seriously threaten sovereignty,' he added.

He said that Bangladesh is being used as India's security protection zone for geopolitical reasons.

He said that India has been given privileges, which the people will not accept.

Commenting that Bangladesh has turned into India's market, the BNP leader said that the prime minister's gratitude to India rather than the interests of Bangladesh is clear to the people.

He said that failure to share Teesta water from India and prank with people is unfortunate for the nation.

Fakhrul thinks that the people of the country will not benefit from the railway agreement to give the corridor to India. 'Giving rail corridors is suicidal as the issue of Bangladesh-India border is not comparable with Europe,' he observed.

He said giving a rail corridor to India was a more dangerous surrender.

'To provide rail transit, the interests of Bangladesh must be protected according to international standards. This rail corridor will not benefit Bangladesh,' he added.

Fakhrul presumed that the details of the 10 agreements and memorandum of understanding, finalised during Hasina's visit to India, would not be revealed like previous times.

He said that one cannot be optimistic about getting Indian loan assistance.

'And encouraging the people of the country to seek treatment in other countries is nothing but destroying the medical system,' he said.​
 

Govt lying about rail corridor, MoUs with India: BNP

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that the government was deceiving the people of the country by spreading lies about granting India a rail corridor and the 10 memorandums of understanding signed in New Delhi recently.

Speaking to reporters at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, he also accused the government of conspiring to make Bangladesh reliant on India through different anti-state agreements.

'They (the government) have never told the truth to the people of Bangladesh. They have always tried to make people fools by resorting to lies. The meaning of the signed MoUs is that they will make Bangladesh dependent on India within a very short time,' Fakhrul said.

He said that the most dangerous thing was that the rail corridor the government was granting India would not serve any purpose for Bangladesh.

'They (India) will use our land for their railway tracks. There will be no benefit for Bangladesh there… They've given (India) a partnership in air, land, and waterways. We don't have any objection to the partnership and connectivity. What has Bangladesh gained is the main question. We haven't gained anything,' the BNP leader observed.

Fakhrul said that Bangladesh also still did not get a fair share of water from the Teesta and other common rivers.

'The border killings have not stopped. No step has been taken to reduce the trade deficit. So, we're speaking the truth about the MoUs. We're not hatching any conspiracy. Rather, the illegal regime is plotting to make Bangladesh dependent on others,' he observed.

Earlier, Fakhrul, together with the new office bearers of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, paid homage to Zia by placing wreaths at his grave.

They also offered a munajat seeking the salvation of Zia's departed soul.

Fakhrul alleged Awami League established fascism with one-party rule in Bangladesh by destroying all the machinery.

He said that the country's people were now not getting justice due to the lack of the rule of law. 'People are also going through ordeals due to financial constraints. Overall, Bangladesh has become a failed state,' he said.

He said that the pro-BNP lawyers today took a vow by paying homage to Zia for making the highest sacrifice for the restoration of the rule of law and democracy.

Replying to a question, Fakhrul said that their party was always against any form of local and international terrorism and extremism.

He, however, alleged that the Awami League government had been harassing its opponents and jailing them in the name of curbing extremism.​
 

Indian Railways pushes North-East connectivity via Bangladesh and Nepal

Indian Railways aims to connect the North East with the rest of the country through Bangladesh and Nepal, reducing travel time to the region, according to government sources.

These routes will bypass the 'Chicken Neck' region in the Siliguri area of West Bengal. The Railway Board has sanctioned a Final Location Survey (FLS) for approximately 1275.50 km, reports The Hindu BusinessLine.

"FLS for 14 new railway connectivity routes connecting Bangladesh, Nepal, and alternate routes towards the North-East have been sanctioned," an official in the Railway Ministry stated.

The survey includes around 500 km of new railway lines connecting Bangladesh and about 367 km of gauge conversion. In Nepal, over 200 km of new lines will be laid, while in the North East, another 212 km of lines will be constructed.

Segment-wise break-up

Nearly 250 km of new lines will be constructed along the West Bengal–Bangladesh–Meghalaya route, covering the Balurghat–Hili–Gaibandha–Mahendraganj–Tura–Mendipathar segment. Additionally, two sections of the West Bengal–Bangladesh route will see the construction of 80 km and 60 km of new railway lines, respectively.

In another segment connecting West Bengal to Assam via Bamanhat in Bangladesh, 38 km of new railway lines will be laid. For the Balurghat–Hili–Parbatipur–Kaunia–Lalmanirhat–Mogalhat–Gitaldaha section, an existing India–Bangladesh trade route, 18 km of new lines will be constructed.

The proposed Belonia–Feni–Chottogram trade route will feature 38 km of new railway lines.

Gauge conversion will take place in all these sections. Other significant segments include two West Bengal–Bangladesh–Tripura routes: the Gede–Darsana–Akhaura–Agartala route will require 100 km of gauge conversion, and the Petrapole–Benapole–Nabharon–Jessore–Rupdia–Padmabila–Lohagara–Kashiani–Shibchar–Mawa–Nimtala–Gendaria–Dhaka–Tongi–Bhairab Bazar–Akhaura–Agartala route will require 120 km of gauge conversion.

Other new routes

Improved connectivity between India and Nepal will include the construction of 190 km of new lines between Biratnagar and New Mal, along with 12.5 km of new lines in the Galgalia–Bhadrapur–Kajali Bazar section, according to a source.

In West Bengal, 170 km of new railway lines will be constructed in the Kumedpur–Ambari Falakata segment to improve connectivity in the Chicken Neck region. In Bihar's Purnea district, around Forbesganj, 18 km of new tracks will be laid to enhance connectivity to Bangladesh's Lakshamipur. Additionally, 25 km of new lines will be built to improve connectivity between Bengal and Bihar through the Chicken Neck region.

"These projects will speed up trade connectivity and enhance passenger services in the region," said a Railway official.​
 

Govt creating issues to divert attention from anti-state treaty: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday said that the government was creating various issues to divert people's attention form the anti-state agreement with other countries.

'The rail corridor agreement with India is a threat to Bangladesh's sovereignty as the government of India will carry military equipment by train and the country will use Bangladesh to deal with its eastern states,' BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said while addressing a prayer session for recovery of its ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia in the capital's Rampura.

Rizvi ridiculed the Awami League-led government as an issue lover.

He said that this government brought out one issue after another, all of which it did to divert attention from the anti-national agreement.

Addressing prime minister Sheikh Hasina, he asked whether or not she was already aware of the corruption by the National Board of Revenue officials before the corruption of its officials Matiur and Faisal was revealed and also about the question papers leak.

'So what do your detectives do? Are they solely busy in making the opposition leaders and activists disappear?' he said.

Criticising the government, he said that whenever the citizens of the country were tortured and killed at the border this government did not protest.

'The government is providing a rail corridor through Bangladesh for India's benefit. India will use the land of Bangladesh to deal with the political crisis there. In other words, they are trying to cast Bangladesh into the perpetual international conspiracy and game,' he alleged.

He also said that the government was plotting to kill former three-time prime minister Khaleda Zia. Khaleda Zia never compromised with any dictator in politics, Rizvi said.​

All the Indian Govt. is after is to neuter Bangladesh completely. This new Indian railway through a foreign country (Bangladesh) is an attack on our sovereignty. Plain and simple.

I see no other example in the whole world where a country allows another country to build a railway through its sovereign territory in such a militarily sensitive area.

Total and utter BS which this woman DOES NOT understand the gravity of.

Would India allow us to build a railway to connect with the Chinese border near Sikkim??

When will this woman "Buy a backbone" and learn to play hardball like Modi does??

Just because she sold off her own political existence to India does not give her the right to sell us off as a country to India.

Your observation regarding Indian geo-political game with Bangladesh about Chicken's Neck is correct. I think Sheikh Hasina should take a short course on Geo-politics from you (y)
