Barren Island is only 90 kms East of the Andaman island. Sadly, monsoon has not completely withdrawn and there is a lot of moisture in the air. It'll not be visible from such distance. The volcano might be visible while flying from Kolkata to Port Blair from November onwards in my opinion, especially early morning.

No one is allowed on this island. Indian Navy though does send patrols ashore once in a way to look around.

"... the island was stark with gray sand and ash, not a trace of vegetation.
The temp was much higher than usual, the crater had wisps of smoke rising, we trekked across to the base.
Some went up to the top.
I have a piece of lava at home"

@Vsdoc Something is appeningn i the Andmans, even Narkondam volcano has shown activity in recent times.

I have never seen Barren Island but had the honour of flying around Narkondam in 2007-08. I was the pilot of a mission conducted by geological survey of India. Narkondam had multiple minor explosions in 2005 & 2006 after the 2004 Tsunami. Narkondam is further east from barren island and well clear of th population.

Explosion in barren island can cause ash deposits in Andaman islands.

Thanks for that share.

Speaking of late 2004, and the tsunami.

I was a biker, between assignments, taking a sabbatical in my professional life at the time.

Riding my Bullet 500 across India. As you know, there was no Golden Quadrilateral then. Work was going on all over the place.

I was racing along the east coast (Chennai to Tadepalligudem to Bhubaneswar) on the same path that was to be destroyed a month(?!) later.

Lucky escape. The entire East Coast was destroyed.

Islands were swept away.

Both islands are completely different, Lakshwadeep are coral islands, whih means they're totally flat terrain like Maldives. Photos lene ke liye badhiya lagta hai but you'll bored in a day or two. Just sand and sea, not vegetation, no terrain.

A&N are mountainous islands which were created by volcanos so you've cliffs near the coast, jungles ending right at the beach etc. Much more engaging. Daily flights from Kolkata and Chennai for round trip 15k.

Just rechecked the dates.

Less than a month.

The Tsunami hit on the 26th. I started from Chennai on the 15th. Reached my hometown Jamshedpur 3 days later.
