Russia Delays S-400 Air Defense System Delivery To India By 2 Years

India will receive the remaining two squadrons of S-400 air defense systems from Russia by August 2026, a delay of two years.

Russia delivered the first three squadrons by 2023, promising to deliver the rest by 2024.

“The production of S-400 Triumf anti-aircraft missile systems is being carried out according to schedule,” Interfax quoted the head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation Dmitry Shugaev as saying.

“The delivery of the equipment of the S-400 Triumf system is expected to be completed within the agreed time frame.”

Delayed Delivery

The Ukraine war, however, delayed the delivery, according to the Asian News International.

“The Russian side has informed that they will now supply the two remaining squadrons of the highly capable air defense systems by August 2026,” the outlet quoted an unnamed defense source as saying.

Indian Air Defense Systems

India bought the system in 2018 for $5.4 billion, receiving and operationalizing the first three squadrons along its borders with China and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the South Asian nation has inducted the indigenous short-to-medium range air defense systems MR-SAM and Akash and the Israeli Spyder.

It is also working on a long-range surface-to-air missile system under the project Kusha.

The S-400

An upgrade of the S-300 family of air defense systems, the S-400 is capable of countering a range of aerial threats up to 400 kilometers (248 miles) away.

Russia inducted the system into service in 2007.

The Indian armed forces have received their first batch of 24 Russian Igla-S man-portable air defense systems and 100 missiles, Indian news portal The Print reported Monday.
In November, India and Russia signed a contract for the supply of 120 systems and 400 missiles. Although the first systems were supplied from Russia the remaining ones will reportedly be produced in India.
The Indian military is currently using the outdated Igla-1M portable air defense systems, according to the article in The Print.
Observers have praised the quality of Russian armaments, which have proven their effectiveness against Ukraine's western-supplied weapons throughout the Donbass conflict.
"There truly is no exaggeration whatsoever when Russia's tank-building tradition is described as the most advanced in the world," said Brian Berletic, a geopolitical analyst and former US Marine. "Russia for many years worked on making itself more self-sufficient in general... This clearly paid off when Western sanctions in 2022 failed to have the crippling impact Washington, London, and Brussels had hoped for, and instead backfired on the West itself."

In a significant development aimed at bolstering the firepower of the Indian Air Force's fighter aircraft, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is gearing up to conduct the inaugural test of the Astra Mark 2 air-to-air missile. This missile boasts a strike range of 130 km and has the capability to target adversaries beyond visual range.
The Astra series of air-to-air missiles are part of the Astra program, which aims to enhance the aerial combat capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. The Astra Mark 1 missiles, a predecessor to the Mark 2, have already been successfully inducted into both the Indian Air Force and the Navy.
