Iran has informed the U.S. that it will refrain from responding to an Israeli airstrike on the consulate in Damascus if a ceasefire is reached in Gaza. This was reported today, April 8, by the Jerusalem Post newspaper with reference to the Iranian agency Jadeh Iran.
According to the Iranian portal, such information was received from an anonymous Arab diplomatic source. An unnamed Arab official added, "if America manages to contain the situation, it will be a great success for the Biden administration, and we can build on that."
It is noted that this information appeared against the backdrop of the resumption of negotiations on a ceasefire and the release of hostages between Israel and Hamas in Cairo, as well as because Tel Aviv continues to prepare for a possible response to the airstrike on Damascus, for which Syria and Iran blamed Israel.
An airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last Monday killed senior IRGC General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, Iran's top adviser in charge of operations in Syria and Lebanon, as well as his deputy and several other corps officers.
