US President Donald Trump has said that officials from the United States and Iran are expected to meet next week, in what could mark the resumption of diplomatic engagement following recent hostilities between Tehran and Israel, Al Jazeera reported.

“I’ll tell you what, we’re going to talk with them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement, I don’t know,” Trump was quoted as saying during a press conference at the NATO summit held in the Netherlands.

Trump reportedly suggested he was not particularly keen on restarting negotiations with Tehran, asserting that recent US strikes had destroyed Iran’s nuclear programme.

“The way I look at it—they fought, the war is done,” he was quoted as saying.​
