BRAC University held a daylong programme at its Merul Badda campus in Dhaka on Monday (April 27), marking the 90th birth anniversary of its founder, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, says a media statement.
The event commemorated the late development leader’s lasting contributions and also coincided with the formal launch of the university’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar unveiled the Silver Jubilee logo, marking the beginning of the year-long observance. The university was founded on June 16, 2001.
The programme paid tribute to Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s legacy and values, which organisers said continue to guide efforts towards building a more just, inclusive and compassionate society.
Titled “Celebration of Abed Bhai’s Life and Legacy”, the day began with a photo exhibition showcasing the founder of BRAC and his contributions to social development in Bangladesh and beyond.
In parallel, the Sir Fazle Hasan Abed Open Rated Chess Tournament 2026 saw participation from more than 300 players from across the country, honouring his commitment to nurturing human potential.
A friendly six-a-side football match titled “জীবনের জয়গান ফুটবল ম্যাচ” was also organised between students of BRAC Secondary School of Purbogangabordi (Faridpur Sadar) and BRAC University. The initiative reflected Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s emphasis on inclusivity, youth empowerment and community building.
In the afternoon, students presented cultural performances including music, dance and artistic displays inspired by his ideals and legacy. The segment was moderated by Khairul Basher, Director of the Office of Communications.
The programme concluded with the presentation of awards for the football tournament by Board of Trustees Chairperson Tamara Hasan Abed, member Salahdin Irshad Imam, Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar, Treasurer Ariful Islam and Registrar Dave Dowland.
“We have a year-long extensive list of celebrations, recognitions, togetherness…building bonds with ourselves, the ecosystem, with partners abroad…we will be involving everybody,” Tamara Hasan Abed said.
BRAC Institute of Languages Advisor Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed and Student Life Joint Director Tahsina Rahman were also present.
