India has conducted the maiden test of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) off the Odisha coast.

The test was carried out on Friday evening by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), according to The Times of India.

A defence source told the newspaper that although the launch did not appear identical to an Agni-6 configuration, the missile tested falls under the ICBM category.

The DRDO has not yet issued an official statement confirming the test.

The Indian daily had earlier reported that an ICBM-category missile test was expected.

The development comes days after DRDO chief Samir V Kamat indicated that work on the Agni-6 programme was ready to move ahead once government approval is granted.

ICBM technology is currently held by only a handful of countries, including the United States, Russia, China and North Korea, with France and the United Kingdom operating submarine-launched systems.

Experts say a successful deployment would significantly expand India’s strategic reach.

Last week, India’s ruling BJP also hinted at the Agni-6 launch in a post on X, claiming the missile would have a strike range exceeding 10,000km and feature MIRV technology.

Separately, India has also developed a glide weapon system capable of converting unguided warheads into precision-guided weapons, the daily reports.

The DRDO and the Indian Air Force jointly conducted the first flight trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation weapon off the Odisha coast on Thursday, according to India’s defence ministry.

The modular range extension kit is described as India’s first indigenous glide weapon system designed to transform “dumb” warheads into “smart” weapons.

India has actually entered in ICBM club a long ago. When India tested Agni V, Chinese experts had said that India is underreporting the range of Agni V which is 8000 k.m. to 9000 K.M. Now with composite motors, Optimized trajectory and better fuel, range/Payload might have gone up. However, India follow a strategy to convey China a message that whole China is in the range of Indian missile strike and simultaneously assure Europe that they are not on target. Missile range of India is declared accordingly. However, what is important in this test is that it carries MIRV. Indian missile has the capability to carry 6 to 10 MIRVs. This strengthens the country's deterrence. However, a risk always looms on India in the form of unstable Pakistan. Any radical and greedy general of Pakistan can be bribed by any nation to carry out Nuke attack on India. India need to clarify that if that is done, India will pursue the same response against the nation behind provocation of Pakistan. However, more important point is that India should denuke Pakistan. This should be the prime national security agenda. Pakistan cannot sustain against India for a single day in conventional war. We saw it in Op Sindoor. Two less than 1 hour conflicts bought Pakistan on its knees. Infact, at the time of second attack on 9th of May, Pakistan planes could not air born to counter India jets. Many Pakistani military establishments were hit without any sort of collateral damage.
