President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called upon all to work together to build a democratic, just, humane, and secure Bangladesh through eliminating corruption, discrimination, and all conspiracies, being inspired by the spirit of November 7.

He made the call in a message on the eve of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day to be observed on Saturday.

The President also called upon all to stay united in commitment to safeguarding national independence and sovereignty, rise above all political differences.

Fakhrul extended heartfelt greetings and felicitations to all citizens of Bangladesh and paid profound tribute to the valiant soldiers and patriotic people who participated in the epoch-making revolution of soldiers and people on November 7, 1975.

“The historic November 7 remains an unforgettable day in our national life and a defining moment in the history of Bangladesh,” he said.

At a critical juncture marked by subservient misrule, corruption, anarchy and hegemonic conspiracies, the united revolution of soldiers and people restored the country's independence and sovereignty, thwarting all conspiracies against the nation, he added.

Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, the Proclaimer of Independence, was freed from captivity.

“With the overwhelming support of the people, he was entrusted with the solemn responsibility of governing the state and steering the nation out of crisis. At this moment of profound crisis, he emerged as a saviour of the nation,” said Fakhrul.

The President said the solidarity of soldiers and people represented an unprecedented national awakening inspired by the spirit of independence.

“Our Armed Forces have consistently demonstrated unity and solidarity in safeguarding the country's independence, sovereignty and the rights of its people,” he said.

The same spirit was rekindled during the mass uprising of 2024, he mentioned.

The unwavering unity of students, women and men, members of the Armed Forces, and people from all walks of life brought an end to sixteen years of fascist rule, he added.

“Our beloved motherland was once again saved from the peril of becoming a subservient state,” he said.

Fakhrul said the significance of this revolution and solidarity in the national life is immeasurable.

In its aftermath, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman restored multiparty democracy, the rule of law, freedom of expression and freedom of the press; laid the foundations for economic emancipation and social peace, he said.

“He freed the country from a submissive foreign policy and guided by the principles of Bangladeshi nationalism, led the nation towards development, progress and prosperity. He fostered national unity and established good governance at all levels,” said Fakhrul.

“Our national independence and sovereignty have repeatedly faced conspiracies, democracy has been trampled upon and fascist misrule has tightened its grip on the nation,” he said.

“Through the collective efforts of our people, Bangladesh has once again embarked upon the path of democracy under the leadership of an elected government,” he said.

To sustain this journey, the president said, it is imperative to further strengthen democratic institutions and all other institutions of the state.

Mutual respect, dialogue must guide efforts to resolve national challenges with the National Parliament remaining at the center of the process, he said.

To fulfill the aspirations of November 7, the state shall be governed by the philosophy of ‘Bangladesh First’, placing the interests of the country and its people above all else, he said.

Fakhrul said national interest, equality, justice and democratic practices shall receive the highest priority.

He wished every success to all programmes marking the Great National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

November 7, 1975, a defining date in determining Bangladesh’s course: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has wished that the revolutionary spirit of November 7 serve as the inspiration and guiding force for building the future of Bangladesh.

He made the wish in a message on the occasion of the Historic National Revolution and Solidarity Day to be observed on Saturday.

The premier said on November 7, 1975, the soldiers and people of Bangladesh united to thwart all conspiracies against the country's independence and sovereignty.

The historic November 7 was a defining moment in the nation's history, when the friends and foes of Bangladesh were clearly identified, he said.

He said a saying deserves particular consideration in discussing Bangladesh's Liberation War and the various historic milestones of the nation: “Those who remain preoccupied with the past are blind in one eye, while those who forget the past are blind in both eyes.”

It is, therefore, neither appropriate to remain absorbed in the past all the time nor is it wise to ignore the lessons of history while charting the course for the future, said Tarique Rahman adding that both approaches would be historical mistakes.

“I believe that the historic November 7, 1975 was a defining date in determining Bangladesh's course,” he said.

Those who sought to turn Bangladesh into a subservient state, those who wanted to deprive the people of their democratic and political rights and establish one-party authoritarian rule and those who sought to undermine the glory of the armed forces, the symbol of the nation's valour, courage and honour, were defeated through the historic revolution of the patriotic soldiers and people on that day, he said.

The Prime Minister said history bears the witness that the defeated forces of November 7, 1975 later united under the banner of the Grand Alliance and turned the country into a subservient state following a prolonged course of conspiracy.

Tarique Rahman said they carried out the planned massacre of military personnel at the BDR Headquarters in Pilkhana, undermining the glory and dignity of the armed forces.

They also deprived the people of their voting rights and democratic and political freedoms, establishing a fascist regime in the country, he said.

Finally, after more than a decade and a half, the country was freed from fascism through a bloody mass uprising led by brave students and people, at the cost of thousands of martyrs, said the premier.

“The War of 1971 was fought to achieve independence. The struggle of 2024 was to safeguard the independence of the country and its people,” said Tarique Rahman.

Just as people from all walks of life took to the streets in 2024 to defend the freedom of the country and its people, the soldiers and civilians had also united and taken to the streets in 1975 to thwart all conspiracies against the country's independence and sovereignty, he added.

“Our foremost commitment on this year's November 7 should be to ensure that no one can ever again deprive the country and its people of their rights or turn Bangladesh into a subservient state. National unity is essential to fulfill this commitment,” he said.

Given Bangladesh's socio-economic, geographical and political realities, preserving national unity requires us to embrace wholeheartedly the spirit of the soldiers' and people's revolution of November 7, he said.

Tarique Rahman said the Liberation War of 1971, the soldiers' and people's revolution of November 7, 1975 against subservient forces, the anti-autocracy movement of 1990, and the anti-fascist mass uprising of 2024 - all these revolutions and uprisings at different junctures in our history have been driven by one common aspiration: to build a self-reliant, secure and welfare-oriented state in an independent Bangladesh by ensuring all democratic and political rights of the people.

“On this historic day, commemorating the November 7, 1975 revolution of the soldiers and people, who were fought to thwart conspiracies against Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty and to protect the democratic rights of its people, let the resolute voice of the patriotic and democracy-loving people ring out: Neither Delhi nor Pindi, nor any other country; Bangladesh comes first,” he said.

He wished every success to all programmes organised nationally to mark November 7.

Bangladesh observes National Revolution and Solidarity Day today, marking the 51st anniversary of the historic events of November 7, 1975.

The day is being observed officially after 19 years as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led government has restored it as an annual public holiday and a Category A national observance, with programmes planned across the country.

November 7 was a public holiday from 1976 to 1995. The Awami League government scrapped the holiday in 1996, while the BNP-led government restored it in 2001 after assuming office.

The military-backed caretaker government abolished the holiday again in November 2007.

After returning to power in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections in February, the BNP-led government decided at a cabinet meeting on October 5 to restore the day as an annual public holiday and officially observe the day.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages on the eve of the day.

In his message, the president called on people to work together to build a democratic, just, humane, and secure Bangladesh by eliminating corruption, discrimination, and conspiracies, drawing inspiration from the spirit of November 7.

He also urged people to rise above political differences and remain united in safeguarding national independence and sovereignty.

In his message, Tarique Rahman said the revolutionary spirit of November 7 would serve as an inspiration and guiding force for building the future Bangladesh.

He said soldiers and civilians had united on November 7, 1975 to thwart conspiracies against the country’s independence and sovereignty.

As part of the official programmes on the occasion, the national flag will be hoisted atop government, semi-government, autonomous and private buildings and educational institutions across the country and at the Bangladesh missions abroad.

Major roads and road islands will be decorated with national flags. Discussions will be held at district and upazila levels, while educational institutions will arrange drawing and essay competitions.

State-run television and radio channels and private broadcasters will air special programmes on the events of November 7, 1975. The Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will organise cultural programmes.

The ruling BNP will observe the day through a seven-day programme from November 5 to 11. Party

chairman Tarique Rahman and senior leaders will place wreaths at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia at 8:30am today.

The party will bring out a procession from its Nayapaltan office at 3:00pm today, while its district and metropolitan units will organise rallies.

The armed forces and agencies under the home ministry will ceremonially hoist the national flag, hold milad mahfils, arrange special feasts and darbars. The Cadet Corps will stage a display at Dhaka Army Stadium.

The prime minister, meanwhile, unveiled a commemorative postage stamp, a first-day cover, and a data card on Wednesday.

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway has waived tolls from 6:00am to noon today.

BNP student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has organised a photography exhibition at Dhaka University and will hold a discussion tomorrow.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka North unit held a discussion in the capital on Friday, where party amir and opposition leader in the Jatiya Sangsad Shafiqur Rahman called for observing the day with dignity, stressing national unity, independence, sovereignty, and democracy.

The National Citizen Party will hold a discussion at its central office at Banglamotor at 11:00am today under the title ‘Sepoy-People’s Uprising: Looking Back in the Context of the Present’.

The Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh has also decided to endorse the government’s decision to observe 7 November 2026 as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

Special prayers will be offered at mosques and other places of worship across the country, seeking peace, prosperity, and progress for the nation on the occasion.

Improved diets will be served at hospitals, prisons, orphanages, and other state-run institutions. Children’s parks under city corporations and municipalities will remain open without any charge throughout the day.

The day commemorates the events of November 7, 1975, amid political and military upheavals following the assassination of the country’s founder president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 that year.

After Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad assumed the presidency, Brigadier General Khaled Mosharraf staged a military coup on November 3 and detained then army chief Major General Ziaur Rahman at his residence.

In the early hours of November 7, soldiers and civilians staged a revolt, demanding Zia’s release. The uprising secured his release. Khaled Mosharraf, Colonel ATM Haider, and several other army officers were killed at the time.

JASOD leader Colonel Abu Taher helped mobilise the soldiers. He was later arrested and hanged on July 21, 1976.

The events paved the way for Ziaur Rahman’s eventual rise to power. He later became president and founded the BNP in 1978.
