Brother @steppeWolff I see all this Indian rejoicing with a Tamil-Brahmin guy playing chess well - but Tam-Brams are only worth being called "Indian" when they win something.

Otherwise South Indians are a butt of jokes and derision in North India (even overseas in the Indian diaspora), just like people of the seven-sisters (Nagas, Manipuris) are always being called "Cheeni" and beat up at every opportunity in Delhi and Mumbai.

I've known dozens of Tam-Brams in my work-life in the US, and almost all were subjects of cruel ridicule while working and spending time with North Indians (targeted for their specific Southern Andhra or Tamil accents and elements of Southern culture such as head-bobbing etc.).

The only people they'd find halfway similar to their own culture (humble, quiet, well-educated, self-effacing, non-confrontational) were Bengalis, like myself and would easily make friends with as personally evidenced by me.

Now that South India is doing economically better than North India, Tamils, Keralans, Karnataka and Andhra people are all of a sudden - "stars" and North Indians are flocking to these states to earn a living.

I find the hypocrisy rather breath-taking.
