National Citizen Party convener and opposition whip Md Nahid Islam on Wednesday demanded the impeachment and arrest of president Mohammed Shahabuddin for the latter’s alleged inaction during the July 24 mass killing.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the graves of the Pilkhana massacre victims at Banani Military Graveyard, the NCP leader accused the president of failing to act as the nation’s guardian during the atrocity.
‘The president cannot evade responsibility for the mass killing during the July uprising. He must be impeached in the first session of parliament and subsequently arrested for his role in the atrocities,’ Nahid said.
‘On behalf of the anti-quota student movement, we even went to the president’s residence, Bangabhaban, demanding quota reform. His silence and inaction allowed this atrocity to occur, making him complicit,’ he said.
Reflecting on earlier efforts to remove the president, Nahid said that political divisions had previously prevented consensus, even though public demand for change had been strong during the interim government’s tenure.
At that time, the president was retained in office due to the need for national stability and constitutional continuity, he said.
Nahid said that with the new government in place and a fresh Parliament formed, the removal of the president was now only a matter of time.
The NCP leader also referenced the 2009 BDR mutiny, which claimed 74 lives, including 57 army officers, and alleged that, through the deliberately orchestrated 2008 election, the Awami League, upon coming to power, initially targeted the Bangladesh Army to weaken the institution crucial for safeguarding the country’s democracy and sovereignty.
