Iran holds nuclear talks with Europeans as tensions ratchet up
Agence France-Presse . Geneva 30 November, 2024, 00:48

Iran, Britain, France and Germany were meeting in Geneva on Friday under a shroud of secrecy to discuss Tehranโ€™s nuclear programme, amid surging tensions even before Donald Trumpโ€™s return to the White House.

In a rare show of discretion, the countries foreign ministries were providing no details on the topics to be discussed, or even the specific time and venue for the talks or how long they were due to last.

The stakes were laid bare in a warning from Britainโ€™s foreign intelligence chief that Iranโ€™s nuclear ambitions posed a major global security threat, despite its weakened position after setbacks dealt to allies Hamas and Hezbollah.

โ€˜Iranโ€™s allied militias across the Middle East have suffered serious blows,โ€™ Secret Intelligence Service chief Richard Moore said in a speech in Paris. โ€˜But the regimeโ€™s nuclear ambitions continue to threaten all of us.โ€™

Social media exchanges following a meeting in Geneva on Thursday between Iranian and European Union diplomats meanwhile hinted at the atmosphere ahead of Fridayโ€™s talks.

Enrique Mora, the EUโ€™s second highest-ranking diplomat, described on X a โ€˜frank exchangeโ€™ with Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Kazem Gharibabadi, two deputies to Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi.

He said the discussion had revolved around โ€˜Iranโ€™s military support to Russia that has to stop, the nuclear issue that needs a diplomatic solution, regional tensions (important to avoid further escalation from all sides) and human rightsโ€™.

Gharibabadi also described the encounter on X as โ€˜frankโ€™, decrying that โ€˜Europe has failed to be a serious playerโ€™ on the nuclear issue, after the Washington in 2018 broke off an international agreement and unilaterally reimposed sanctions on Tehran.

Iranโ€™s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs also urged the EU to โ€˜abandon its self-centred and irresponsible behaviourโ€™ on a range of issues including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

Fridayโ€™s meeting takes place in the context of extreme tension in the Middle East between Israel and Iran and its allies.

This week a fragile ceasefire took effect in Lebanon after a year of conflict with Israel which has dealt a heavy blow to Iran-backed Hezbollah, while Hamas is reeling amid the war still raging in Gaza.

And on January 20, Trump, who pursued a policy of โ€˜maximum pressureโ€™ against Iran during his first term, returns to the White House.

Iran hopes to mend relations with Europe, while also maintaining a firm stance.

In an interview with The Guardian newspaper published Thursday, Araghchi warned that frustration in Tehran over unmet commitments, such as lifting sanctions, was fuelling debate over whether the country should alter its nuclear policy.

Fridayโ€™s talks have been overshadowed by the European countries teaming up with the United States to have Iran censured by the UN atomic watchdog for its lack of cooperation on nuclear issues.

The IAEA chiding provoked a defiant response from Iran, which slammed the move as โ€˜politically motivatedโ€™ and in response announced the launch of โ€˜new advanced centrifugesโ€™ designed to increase its stockpile of enriched uranium.

This โ€˜is clearly going in the wrong directionโ€™, a German foreign ministry spokesman told reporters Friday.

Iran insists on its right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, but according to the IAEA, it is the only non-nuclear-weapon state enriching uranium to 60 per cent.

The IAEA said in a report that Iran planned to install 6,000 new centrifuges at its sites in Fordo and Natanz, aimed at up to five per cent enrichment.

While far lower than the current levels it is enriching at, that is higher than the 3.67 per cent limit Tehran had agreed to in the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

That deal between Tehran and major powers aimed to give Iran relief from crippling Western sanctions in exchange for limiting its nuclear programme to prevent it from developing a weapons capability.

Tehran adhered to the deal, but in 2018, during Trumpโ€™s first presidency, Washington unilaterally pulled out of that agreement and slapped heavy sanctions back on Iran.

For Tehran, the goal of Fridayโ€™s talks is to avoid a โ€˜double disasterโ€™ scenario of renewed pressures from both Trump and European governments, according to political analyst Mostafa Shirmohammadi.

I'm not one to dispute ki that sorta behavior is cringe af.

I am, however, quite offended, ki aap mujhe bhi us camp me daal rahay ho.. je kya baat hui ?

It should be quite obvious to anyone that Trump is going to be a yuge and tremendous factor for your beloved I-ran going fwd.

I remain quite sanguine about the near future but, he might come across as quite boisterous at times but at his core he a proper "talk softly but walk with a big stick" (or however that quote goes) sorta man.

He's not a neocon. Him stuffing his cabinet with some hard-nosed hawks is part of a two pronged political strategy.

1. that he sorta placates doubters at home (in the DC swamp, specifically)

2. textbook 'Art of the Deal' bluster.

He's not some random irrelevant small timer ranting on twitter, POTUS hai, his words carry weight.

I think it is a golden opportunity for Iran to make good deals, tremendous oil deals, get relief from sanctions and military pressure and move toward normalization.

It is the xutia ayatullahs who need to check into rehab to cure their 'entity' addiction. They're on VERY shaky ground, don't have a single ally of note, I mean.. Houthis, Hizbullas and Ham-ass ? .. Qaher 313 fightar zets ? .. and you want to escalate, right now ?? with Trump on his way to the resolute desk ? .. pagal ho gaye hain ye ayetulleh bc

ek second me phod deni hai inki.. na navy, na airforce.. all they have is manpower in the form of troops and these fuss zihadi groups mentioned above.

Pleaj thinking rationally, bhai.

Oh bhai your leaders have put your life into the hands of these hillbillay yet again. You will regret this horrible decision down the road very badly.

You think they care about yous? No! Theyโ€™ll pit you against the Chinese and youโ€™ll get all fukked up from that just like the last time with Nehru.

Itโ€™ll be a bad awakening yet again.

They got no use for yous except for yous to fukk around with China.

Nothing else!

And more importantly theyโ€™ve got nothing else on offer either. Let me ask youโ€ฆโ€ฆ.what do you actually need from them other than legitimacy?

@vsdocโ€ฆ..iss ko samjha bhai heโ€™s like a teenager.

What are you even on about ?

The American people decided for themselves to put Trump back in office, I'm but a humble albeit keen observer of US presidential elections, and a bit of a Trump fan, have been so since his Apprentice TV show which my girlphraand way back in the day in mid 2000s was obsessed with.

We even fired a crooked thief maid that way.. "you're fired, get out of here" :ROFLMAO:

Years later, I watched that famous press conference when he came down the elevator in his building (had long since split from girlie) .. and was over the moon excited to see him run for office, he'd been teasing for DECADES !

Total boss man, I knew he'd win.. everyone laughed at me.. but srsly, bro.. I got on the Trump train back in 2015, watched him destroy the field in those epic primaries, and greatly enjoyed when he won after beating crooked Hillary ! :D

You think they care about yous? No! Theyโ€™ll pit you against the Chinese and youโ€™ll get all fukked up from that like the last time with Nehru.
I'm under no such illusion. The US is no great friend of India, and Trump is very very transactional in his dealings.

Itโ€™ll be a bad awakening yet again.
I'm always awake, sota hi nahi.

bhai, nothing.. what legitimacy ? we got plenty of cred and legitimacy as is.

India - US relations, Trump or no.. does not figure in my calculus when I'm looking at what Trump might do in the middle east.

Which is what this thread is about ?

Stop clubbing me in with the rest of these online Indians.

Also, just so you know, full beef eating irreligious guy here.. gun to my head, I'll still have an impossible time telling you when I last went to a temple or pooja or any of that xhit. lol

Detachment, bro.. is the key. Apart from family and the Indian test cricket team.. nothing much really bothers me.
