Theres a thing called "Planform Alignment". Stealth aircraft aim for planform alignment where all edges and surfaces reflect radar waves away from the radar source. The J-20's canards are designed with this in mind. J-20's design aligns the canards with other surfaces to some degree, reducing the frontal radar cross-section (RCS) impact.Canard thing is real, I'm no expert but others who are have made their views known. Made sense to layman me.
Plus; The J-20 has canards that are positioned in such a way that they are less visible from certain angles, especially head-on. When not deflected, they contribute less to the RCS.
Plus design characteristics depend on the intended roles. J20 is a supercruising air superiority fighter and bomb truck. Canards offer it agility.
And anyways most western analysts still rate its stealth above than Su 57. Both radar and IR signatures.
