Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Australia's government of fuelling antisemitism in the lead-up to Sunday's shooting in Sydney.

Fifteen victims have died following the attack on a Jewish festival at Bondi Beach.

Mr Netanyahu says: "Antisemitism is a cancer that spreads when leaders are silent and do not act."

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has laid responsibility for the deadly Bondi shooting attack at the feet of Anthony Albanese, accusing the Australian leader of pouring "fuel on the antisemitism fire" by recognising a Palestinian state.

It is not the first time Mr Netanyahu has criticised Mr Albanese, in a repeat of previous allegations of weak leadership levelled by the Israeli prime minister.

Netanyahu says Albanese has 'betrayed' Israel​

The Israeli prime minister has launched an extraordinary personal attack on Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, saying he has "betrayed" Israel.

In a fiery address overnight, Mr Netanyahu said "antisemitism is a cancer" and that it "spreads when leaders stay silent".

"I call upon you to replace weakness with action, appeasement with resolve. Instead, prime minister, you replaced weakness with weakness and appeasement with more appeasement," Mr Netanyahu said.

"Your government did nothing to stop the spread of antisemitism in Australia. You did nothing to curb the cancer cells that were growing inside your country.
"You took no action. You let the disease spread and the result is the horrific attacks on Jews we saw today."

Mr Albanese avoided hitting back at Mr Netanyahu, when asked for his response to the comments.

"This is a moment for national unity," he told reporters in Sydney, flanked by the New South Wales premier and police commissioner.

"This is a moment for Australians to come together. That's precisely what we'll be doing.

Mr Netanyahu praised the actions of a bystander, believed to be a Sydney greengrocer, who intervened and wrestled a gun from one of the attackers and was later taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"We saw an action of a brave man — turns out a brave Muslim man, and I salute him — that stopped one of these terrorists from killing innocent Jews," he said.

"But it requires the action of your government, which you are not taking. And you have to because history will not forgive hesitation and weakness. It will honour action and strength.

"That's what Israel expects of each of your governments in the West and elsewhere. Because the disease spreads and it will consume you as well."

The Israeli prime minister also said his country would "fight those who try to annihilate us".

Trump praises hero citizen who disarmed suspect​

US President Donald Trump praised the man who intervened.

"In Australia, you probably read, it's been a very, very brave person who went and attacked frontally one of the shooters and saved a lot of lives," Mr Trump said in Washington DC.

"A very brave person, who's right now in the hospital pretty seriously wounded. So, great respect to the man that did that.
"To Australia, the prime minister, to everybody that we know so well, that we get along with so well, we have a great relationship. That's a terrible situation going on over there."

In August, Mr Albanese and ASIO chief Mike Burgess tied at least two incidents on Australian soil to an Iranian operation fuelling antisemitic attacks, expelling the Iranian ambassador as a result.

Months later, Israel's spy agency Mossad named a man it claimed led the unit within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, now a listed terrorist organisation under Australian law, recruiting foreign nationals to carry out attacks around the world.

Israel's Channel 12 is reporting that Mossad warned Australian security agencies a month ago about "terrorist infrastructure" being used to plan attacks in Australia, and that Australian authorities would be investigating Iranian ties.

"As a matter of principle, Iran condemns the violent attack against civilians in Sydney, Australia," Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmaiel Baqaei said on X.

"Terror violence and mass killing shall be condemned, wherever they're committed, as unlawful and criminal."

Israeli foreign minister says 'real change' needed in Australia​

Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong spoke to her Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa'ar, in the hours after the attack, and cancelled her planned trip to China and Japan.

Mr Sa'ar said he expressed Israel's sorrow over the attack, but also continued the government's criticism of Australia.

"I said that since [October 7] there has been a surge in antisemitism in Australia, including violent incitement against Israel and Jews in the digital and public spheres, including comparisons of Israel to the Nazis and to the Holocaust, as well as the burning of synagogues and Israeli flags, and marches featuring explicit expressions of hatred," he posted on social media platform X.

"I also said that security for the Jewish community in Australia will be achieved only through a real change in the public atmosphere.

"Calls such as 'Globalise the Intifada', 'From the River to the Sea Palestine Will be Free', and 'Death to the IDF' are not legitimate, are not part of the freedom of speech, and inevitably lead to what we witnessed today."

Israeli authorities have frequently and repeatedly blamed criticism of the Israeli government and military's actions in places such as Gaza for fuelling antisemitism.
