The forensic DNA laboratory of the Criminal Investigation Department on Thursday disclosed identities of five charred bodies found in a building of Milestone School and College in the capitalโ€™s Uttara after a Bangladesh Air Force jet crashed into it on July 21.

With two new deaths, the government on the day revised the death toll at 31 in the BAF jet crash from the earlier figure shared by the Inter Services Public Relations Directorate.

Till Thursday night, a total of 51 people were admitted to hospitals with 14 critically injured kept in intensive care units of two hospitals.

The number of missing people in the incident was five till Thursday, including three students and two guardians, according to the Milestone School and College authorities.

On Thursday, the advisory council of the interim government at a meeting decided that the government would give all necessary supports to the families of the victims โ€” killed and injured โ€” in the crash incident.

Decision was also made to extend state honours to two deceased teachers of the educational institution โ€“ Maherin Chowdhury and Masuka Begum โ€“ in the incident.

Maherin and Masuka saved lives of a number of students during the jet crash, but lost their lives in the process, according to media reports.

A probe committee, formed by the Milestone School and College authorities, is scheduled to submit the report on the incident today.

Following the crash, seven charred bodies remained unidentified at the Combined Military Hospital.

Members of the CIDโ€™s DNA lab collected a total of 11 DNA samples from the unidentified bodies and body parts on July 22, said a press release issued by the CID.

Identities of five bodies have been confirmed by analysing the profiles of a total of 11 members of five families.

From six samples, the identity of Lamia Akhter Sonia, daughter of Md Babul and Mazeda, was confirmed.

The identity of Afsana Akhter Priya, daughter of Md Abbas Uddin and Minu Akhter, was confirmed from two samples.

The identities of Wakia Ferdous Nidhi, daughter of Md Faruq Hossain and Salma Akhter, Raisa Moni, daughter of Shahabul Sheikh and Mim, and Mariam Umme Afiya, daughter of Abdul Qadir and Umme Tamima, were confirmed from one sample each.

On Thursday, Mahiya, 15, another student, died at about 4:30pm in the ICU of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery with 50 per cent burn injuries, said the instituteโ€™s residential physician Shawon Bin Rahman.

Before her, according to a health and family welfare ministry press release, Mahtab, 15, who sustained 85 per cent burn injuries, passed away in the ICU of the NIBPS at about 1:52pm on the same day.

Till now among the deceased, 27 were children, including many under 12 years of age, two were schoolteachers, and one was the aircraftโ€™s pilot.

On the day, the Directorate General of Health Services under the health and family welfare ministry published updates about the deceased and injured patients till 9:00pm.

According to the updates, 31 people were killed in the BAF jet crash incident and 51 others were undergoing treatment till Thursday night.

Of them, 13 victims died and 42 were undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, 15 died and eight undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital, one each died at Dhaka Medical College, Lubana General Hospital and Cardiac Center and United Hospital Limited and one was undergoing treatment at Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital.

As per the directorate, six patients were in the ICU at the Combined Military Hospital.

National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery director professor Mohammad Nasir Uddin at a press briefing on Thursday night said that among the admitted patients at the institute, eight victims were in the ICU with six in critical condition.

Replying to a query, he said that he heard that a five-member specialist team from China was scheduled to reach Bangladesh on Thursday to assist in the victimsโ€™ treatment.

Till 5:00pm on Thursday, a total of 23 bodies were handed over to families.

Meanwhile on July 21, the ISPR in a press release said that 20 people were killed and 171 others were injured in the accident.

The following day, the ISPR gave updates that 31 were killed and 165 others were injured till July 22. After that the ISPR did not give any update on the statistics.

On Thursday, a senior official of the ISPR, said that the health ministry would provide the details of the death, injured and unidentified bodies to the media from now on.

The Milestone School and College authorities on Thursday issued a statement saying that so far 20 students, two teachers and two guardians had been killed in the incident and five, including three students and two guardians, remained missing.

In the incident, 48 people including 38 students, seven teachers, two staff and one guardian were injured, said the educational institutionโ€™s authorities.

The educational institutionโ€™s public relations officer Shah Bulbul confirmed that the probe committee which formed on July 22 would submit report today.

At the advisory council meeting on Thursday, decision was also made to hold special prayers at all religious institutions today for the jet crash victims.

The religious affairs ministry on Thursday night issued an order requesting all religious institutions across the country to hold special prayers for the crash incident victims today.

A coordination cell was formed by the BAF on Thursday at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (Room: 811, 01769993558) and Combined Military Hospital (01815912617) to provide different supports, including treatment to the injured people.

My heart goes out to these folks.

To worry about playground injuries to your third grader is one thing, but this ??

May Allah rest their souls in Jannah. :-(

If the Air Force does not move their training facilities outside of Dhaka, that will be serious business now.

No, Iran let the US bomb. Trump fukkin rang up khamenei 2 days in advance and told him to get everything (HEU/ centrifuges) out and then told khamenei heโ€™s not going to do any damage and in return Iran can bomb AL-Udeid in Qatar after the US evacuates all aircraft and personnel.

Then khamenei and Trump pulled down their panties and touched their dicks with one another and kissed and made up like good girl friends.

This is what actually happened.
well. I understand. At that time, the Chinese Air Force was patrolling Japanese airspace. Xi called Biden and said, 'bro. I want to patrol Japanese airspace'. Biden said, 'Wait, bro, I ordered USFJ to evacuate Japan first'.

Milestone School and College in Dhakaโ€™s Uttara should be relocated as it lies within the approach area of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and poses safety risks, the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) has said in a report.

โ€œThe institution may be technically legal, but its location is operationally unsafe,โ€ said BIP Joint Secretary Tamjidul Islam, presenting the report, at a press conference at Plannersโ€™ Tower in Dhakaโ€™s Banglamotor.

The report warned against allowing schools, colleges, mosques, or madrasas in the approach zone and recommended green or agricultural use instead.

It also noted that while RAJUKโ€™s Detailed Area Plan regulates building height, it lacks guidance on land use.

BIP President Adil Muhammad Khan said the area where Milestone now stands was originally a water body when the Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan was drafted in 1995.

Questioning why RAJUK did not object to the filling of low land for Milestone, the planner said neither RAJUK nor the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) fulfilled their responsibilities.

โ€œEven the builders of the structures did not fulfill their own commitments,โ€ he added.

At least 33 people have died and over 150 have been injured after a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into the school on Monday.

BIP General Secretary Sheikh Muhammad Mehedi Ahsan called for a high-level review of public structures in the approach area .

He suggested that those concerned approved unsafe development should be identified and held accountable so that similar incidents may be prevented in the future.

Their ventilators have been removed, and they are now able to breathe on their own. We hope to discharge four to five patients tomorrow, Saturday. We expect to discharge some patients every day.โ€

โ€œToday, medical teams from Singapore, China, and India held meetings with us to discuss the treatment management of these patients, and they also visited the patients,โ€ he added.

Professor Nasir Uddin said, โ€œI personally handed over the bodies of the two deceased today to their families. One of them was Ayman (Tasnim Afroze Ayman), who is from Shariatpur. The body will be buried in Shariatpur after holding janaza at Uttara. We have informed the civil surgeon there, and he will arrange the burial. What did pilot Tawkir do exactly before his jet crashed in Uttara
Prothom Alo special correspondent Bayezid Ahmed prepared this article speaking to former assistant chief of the air staff and former chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority, Air Vice Marshal (Retd) M Sanaul Huq.

Deceased Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam.

Flight Lieutenant Tawkir Islamโ€™s mission was one of the sorts where he was supposed to fly for a maximum of 15 to 20 minutes over the runway. It was a short mission, as this was his first solo flight.

Earlier in the morning, he had already completed a check ride. He had already completed a mission that day, supervised by his commanding officer. That was like a test. Once Tawkir was assessed and deemed fit, only then he was cleared for the solo mission.

Now, what does the commanding officer typically do during such a flight? Thereโ€™s a mobile hut or van-like setup located next to the Air Traffic Control tower beside the take-off site, and a pilot is always there equipped with the same radio communication equipment.

During such important missions, the commanding officer himself goes to the hut, and in this case the commanding officer was present there. The commanding officer has a radio on hand and is able to hear everything in the cockpit and can communicate if necessary.

So, Tawkir took off as planned. This type of mission is conducted within visual range so he was visible the entire time. His commanding officer himself kept eyes on him. The air traffic controller also monitored him. The controller might not be a pilot, but the commanding officer is. The commanding officer was the one who cleared him for the flight.

He saw everything was in order and there were no issues with the flying. Tawkir completed the first circuit, then a second. Then he was supposed to complete a third circuit and go for landing, thatโ€™s it.

At that moment, during the third circuit, the commanding officer noticed something unusual while Tawkir was flying in from the direction of Uttara or Tongi. He had taken off towards the direction of Nikunja and was now returning from the opposite direction. He was not supposed to land yet, was supposed to continue flying.

When Tawkir was still three to four kilometres away, the commanding officer was looking and it appeared that Tawkir might to be losing altitude. He can see it clearly through the binoculars. The aircraft was already flying low at an altitude of 1,500 feet at a speed that takes ten seconds to cover a kilometer in distance. That is not at all fast for us pilots for we fly even at supersonic speeds.

So, Tawkir was approaching at a speed more towards the slower side, and the commanding officer could see that the aircraft was gradually descending. But it wasnโ€™t supposed to descend, it was meant to maintain a steady altitude.

Thatโ€™s when the Commanding Officer radioed Tawkir, saying, โ€œCheck your height.โ€ To that, he responded saying โ€œRogerโ€, the usual reply for pilots that means โ€˜copiedโ€™.

The officer initially assumed that perhaps Tawkir had descended unintentionally. He just may have dropped to 1,200 or 1,300 feet from 1,500 feet. But then he noticed the aircraft wasnโ€™t ascending back up, rather it continued descending. At that point, he realised the aircraft was coming down dangerously fast.

The commanding officer then said, โ€œEject, eject,โ€ twice giving Tawkir the command to eject. Every military aircraft is equipped with an ejection seat, allowing a pilot to escape instantly if needed, and it takes just one second for the pilot to get out.

Our training as pilots teaches us that a pilot should only eject when they feel they can no longer land the aircraft safely. When an aircraft is headed for destruction or the pilotโ€™s life is at risk, the action the pilot goes for at that moment is ejection.

So, when the commanding officer saw the aircraft descending in a dangerous manner, he gave the final command himself saying, โ€œEject!โ€ He said it twice. But there was no response from Tawkir.

That likely means the pilot was fully focused on trying to regain control of the aircraft, which is not unusual. Iโ€™ve experienced such moments myself while trying to control an aircraft under stress.

In that situation, I didnโ€™t respond to radio calls until I regained control of the aircraft. Only after that I replied to the commanding officerโ€™s message. Had I crashed, I wouldnโ€™t have been able to answer and no one would have known what had happened in those critical moments.

So, in my opinion, this tragic crash at the Milestone School and College in Uttara was caused by a mechanical failure. I donโ€™t believe the pilot was at fault here in any way. Many have been saying without proper knowledge, that the aircraft was too old and defective.

But I would argue that the aircraft was fully functional, and the pilot was fit for dutyโ€”otherwise, he would never have been cleared for a solo flight. The FT-7 fighter jet was manufactured in China in 2013 so, they are not that old.

Finally, I would say Flight Lieutenant Tawkir tried his best to regain control of the aircraft, but failed. The result was a devastating crash that led to the heartbreaking loss of so many young students. We must accept this tragedy as fate.
