নৌবাহিনী প্রধান এডমিরাল এম নাজমুল হাসান বলেন, বাংলাদেশের উত্তরোত্তর উন্নয়নে ও সমৃদ্ধির লক্ষ্যে নৌবাহিনীকে যুগোপযোগী এবং প্রযুক্তি সম্পন্ন নৌবাহিনী হিসেবে গড়ে তোলা হচ্ছে যা দেশের সার্বভৌমত্ব ও নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করার পাশাপাশি সমুদ্রভিত্তিক অর্থনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ডে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা রাখতে সক্ষম হবে। একটি সক্ষম ও শক্তিশালী নৌবাহিনী গড়ে তোলার লক্ষ্যে ইতোমধ্যে নৌবহরে উল্লেখযোগ্য সংখ্যক আধুনিক যুদ্ধজাহাজ, স্পেশাল ফোর্স, হেলিকপ্টার, এমপিএ ও সাবমেরিন যুক্ত হয়েছে এবং কমিশনিং করা হয়েছে একাধিক নৌ ঘাঁটি। সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধির ধারাবাহিকতায় বাংলাদেশ নৌবাহিনী আজ একটি আধুনিক ত্রিমাত্রিক নৌবাহিনী। এছাড়াও ত্রিমাত্রিক নৌবাহিনীর সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধির লক্ষ্যে নতুন নতুন ঘাঁটি, উন্নততর জাহাজ, আধুনিক যুদ্ধ সরঞ্জাম ও প্রযুক্তি সংযোজনের কার্যক্রম চলমান রয়েছে। নৌবাহিনীর দক্ষ ব্যবস্থাপনায় শিপইয়ার্ডসমূহ নিজস্ব প্রযুক্তিতে জাহাজ নির্মাণ করছে। এরইধারাবাহিকতায় খুলনা শিপইয়ার্ডে নির্মিত পাঁচটি প্যাট্রোল ক্রাফট ইতোমধ্যে নৌবহরে সংযুক্ত হয়েছে। নৌবাহিনীতে ২টি Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) ও ৩টি Landing Craft Tank (LCT) সংযোজনের কার্যক্রম প্রক্রিয়াধীন রয়েছে এবং ২টি Utility Helicopter অতি শীঘ্রই বাংলাদেশ নৌবাহিনীতে যুক্ত হবে বলে নৌবাহিনী প্রধান আশা প্রকাশ করেন।

পটুয়াখালী'র কলাপাড়া উপজেলার লালুয়ায় বানৌজা শের-ই-বাংলা প্যারেড গ্রাউন্ডে রবিবার অনুষ্ঠিত মনোমুগ্ধকর কুচকাওয়াজে নৌবাহিনী প্রধান এডমিরাল এম নাজমুল হাসান প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত থেকে প্যারেড পরিদর্শন ও সালাম গ্রহণ করেন। নৌবাহিনীর বি/২০২৪ ব্যাচের ৪৪০ জন নবীন নাবিকের বুটক্যাম্প প্রশিক্ষণ বর্ণাঢ্য শিক্ষা সমাপনী কুচকাওয়াজের মধ্য দিয়ে সমাপ্ত হয়।

এ অনুষ্ঠানে নৌবাহিনীর বি/২০২৪ ব্যাচের নবীন নাবিকদের মধ্যে মো. এ কে এম শাহাদাত হোসেন সাদী পেশাগত ও সকল বিষয় সর্বোচ্চ ফল অর্জন করে সেরা চৌকস নাবিক হিসেবে 'নৌপ্রধান পদক', মো. শাহীনুর আলম শিমুল দ্বিতীয় স্থান অধিকার করে 'কমখুল পদক' এবং সাব্বির রহমান তৃতীয় স্থান অধিকার করে 'শের-ই-বাংলা পদক' অর্জন করেন। তাদের মাঝে নৌবাহিনী প্রধান পুরস্কার বিতরণ করেন।

নৌবাহিনী প্রধান নবীন নাবিকদের উদ্দেশ্যে তার ভাষণে, স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধে অংশগ্রহণকারী সকল অকুতোভয় বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধা ও নৌ কমান্ডোদের সর্বোচ্চ আত্মত্যাগের কথা কৃতজ্ঞচিত্তে স্মরণ করেন। সেই সাথে স্মরণ করেন জুলাই-আগস্টে বৈষম্যবিরোধী আন্দোলনে শাহাদাত বরণকারী সকল শহিদকে।

বাহিনী প্রধান এডমিরাল এম নাজমুল হাসান বলেন, বর্তমান বিশ্বের চ্যালেঞ্জ মোকাবিলায় একটি যুগোপযোগী নৌবাহিনী গড়ে তোলার জন্য প্রয়োজন চৌকশ ও প্রশিক্ষিত নাবিক। নৌবাহিনীর উন্নয়নের অগ্রযাত্রাকে অব্যাহত রাখতে নৌবাহিনী প্রধান নবীন নাবিক প্রশিক্ষণ বিদ্যালয় থেকে অর্জিত জ্ঞান যথাযথভাবে কাজে লাগিয়ে নিজেদের যোগ্য নাবিক হিসেবে গড়ে তোলার এবং জাতীয় নিরাপত্তা ও অগ্রগতির পথে সঠিকভাবে দায়িত্ব পালনের আহবান জানান। পেশা হিসেবে দেশ সেবা ও দেশ গড়ার পবিত্র দায়িত্বকে বেছে নেওয়ায় নৌবাহিনী প্রধান নবীন নাবিকদেরকে আন্তরিক ধন্যবাদ জানান। সেইসাথে আজকের নবীন নাবিকরা ভবিষ্যতে বাংলাদেশের সুবিশাল সমুদ্রসীমা রক্ষার পাশাপাশি নতুন বাংলাদেশ গঠনে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা পালন করবে বলে নৌবাহিনী প্রধান আশাবাদ ব্যক্ত করেন।

মনোজ্ঞ এ কুচকাওয়াজ অনুষ্ঠানে নৌবাহিনী সদর দপ্তরের পিএসওগণ, উচ্চপদস্থ সামরিক ও অসামরিক কর্মকর্তাবৃন্দ, পটুয়াখালী, বরিশাল ও খুলনা অঞ্চলের গণ্যমান্য ব্যক্তিবর্গ এবং নবীন নাবিকদের অভিভাবকগণ উপস্থিত ছিলেন।​

You are quite correct.

Anything under 500 tons displacement (typically 200~350 tons) should limit activity to within a mile or two of Bangladesh coastal areas.

These are called Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPVs). I am sure you know about these.

The minimum displacement that should be allowed to go into patrolling into the open ocean should be the size of Durjoy class (650 tons). They had plans to build more at Khulna Shipyard. maybe got stalled, who knows.

BN might be looking at alternate even larger patrol craft designs. Coast Guard patrol crafts are called Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and are way less equipped i.e. no missiles or torpedos.

Malaysia's equivalent LPCs (like Durjoy class) are called Keris class and they have (or will have) 18 of them when done. We only have four for a similar (or larger) patrolled area.

The Bangladesh Navy's "Special Combing Operation-2025," under the "In Aid to Civil Power" initiative, aimed at protecting the country's fisheries resources and biodiversity, concluded on Friday.

The operation, which began on January 12, was carried out in four phases, in coordination with law enforcement agencies, according to a press release from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Saturday.

The Navy conducted special combing operations across 16 districts, including Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Shariatpur, Barisal, Jhalakathi, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Barguna, Bhola, and Munshiganj.

The operation involved 12 ship bases of the Bangladesh Navy and numerous boats. A total of 303 operations were conducted in four phases: January 12-19, January 25-31, February 9-15, and February 21-28, 2025, the release mentioned.

Illegal nets and jatkas worth more than Tk 132 crore were seized during the operation.

Fishing nets were burned and destroyed in the presence of local authorities, while jatka fish were donated to local orphanages.

Additionally, public awareness campaigns were held in surrounding areas to discourage the use of illegal fishing nets and promote legal fish harvesting, the release added.

The Bangladesh Navy has been conducting special operations in coastal districts since 2021 to protect jatka, and currently, seven ship bases are deployed in nine districts to prevent jatka fishing.​

BNS Somudra Avijan is a training ship (frigate) and is probably the highest displacement ship ( 3250 Tonnes ) in Bangladesh Navy.

It is ideal for having spaces to mount VLS tubes. Don't know if that will ever be done, being how old it is.

This particular ship belonged to USCG. I don't think BN has any plan to arm this ship with missiles. In my humble opinion, BN should buy Type 23 Duke class frigates from Royal navy. Type 23 frigates will be decommissioned by the Royal navy soon. BN can buy a few of these frigates at scrap price.

This particular ship belonged to USCG. I don't think BN has any plan to arm this ship with missiles. In my humble opinion, BN should buy Type 23 Duke class frigates from Royal navy. Type 23 frigates will be decommissioned by the Royal navy soon. BN can buy a few of these frigates at scrap price.

My thoughts exactly, I thought about this even a couple of years ago when they were planning replacements for the Duke Class...excellent choice (especially these having Anti-air VLS tubes)! I see in Wiki they have four ready for disposal already, HMS Monmouth, Montrose, Westminster and Northumberland.

The only problem is we have to become dependent on Harpoons if we keep the existing fitment. However there is an excellent alternative - Turkish Atmaca which we may soon be using and standardizing on for both Naval and Army use. Turkey and Bangladesh Signed 6th Cooperation Agreement | TURDEF

@Saif bhai, I feel that our existing Durjoy class LPCs essentially have no teeth. Equipped with ineffective missiles like the C704 (only 35 KM range).

When Azmat Class FACs in Pakistan are equipped with Harbah cruise missiles with 290 KM range. Here is one of the Azmat class vessels (PNS Himmat) firing a Harbah missile (courtesy Quwa.org).

We should equip our existing and future Durjoy class (roughly same size as Azmat class) with that missile (two Durjoy class were already built at Khulna Shipyard and I believe there were further plans to build another four).

I am sure Pakistan will transfer the Harbah missile technology to Bangladesh too as they did to Qatar. @PakistanProud bhai your thoughts on the matter.

290 KM range of Harbah is just shy of MTCR limits of 300 KM.

Bangladesh navy should procure the four available Duke Class frigates at the soonest. Duke Class will give us the capabilities to protect our EEZ from IN's Nilgiri class frigates. We should not buy 2nd hand Chinese frigates because they lack the capabilities to match IN's Nilgiri and Talwar class frigates. By the by, don't worry about Harpoon because we can replace it with Chinese CM-302. Replacing missile tubes is no big deal. Hope you agree with me.

Bangladesh has cancelled a $21 million deal with a Kolkata-based state-run shipbuilding firm of India for the construction of an advanced ocean-going tugboat, according to Indian media reports.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) signed a contract for a tugboat with the Bangladesh Navy in July 2024, a month before a mass uprising ousted Sheikh Hasina from power.

It says the contract was signed as India and Bangladesh agreed to strengthen defence cooperation with a long-term perspective during Hasina's visit to India in June 2024.

In a filing to the National Stock Exchange of India Limited on Wednesday (21 May), GRSE said, "...In terms of Regulation 30 and other applicable provisions of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, as amended (the 'SEBI Listing Regulations'), we wish to inform you that the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh has cancelled the order."

Several Indian media outlets, including Times of India, published stories on the matter quoting the stock market filing.

BBC Bangla also quoted GRSE's letter in its report on the matter.

The deal with the GRSE for an 800-tonne ocean-going tugboat was the first major contract under India's $500 million line of credit for defence purchases, the Hindustan Times report further reads.

The media also referred to "strained relations" between the two sides and India restricting imports of ready-made garments from Bangladesh only to Kolkata and Nhava Sheva ports.

Meanwhile, the Times of India called it a "nose-dive in bilateral ties."

According to a BBC Bangla report, the stock prices of GRSE were hit hard yesterday (22 May) morning as the news of the deal cancellation was made public. The company later recovered from the initial plunging.

The Bangladesh Navy or the Ministry of Defence has not made any statement yet regarding why the order was cancelled.

A high-ranking source in the Bangladesh government, seeking anonymity, told BBC Bangla that they have also learned about the order cancellation but could not say why or when this decision was taken.

The Indian company has also not provided any information regarding why Bangladesh cancelled the order.​
