Life in America depends on the will and education of the person because the sky is the limit, unlike in Europe. All of my close family members from Islamabad who live in the US have studied there, and all have at least a US bachelor's degree ( kids). Others have Ph. D.s, like my wife, who has a Ph.D. and two MSs. We have a big Pakistani community with professionals where we live in Florida. I have friends in Canada who have Canadian degrees, and they are also doing great. Education pays off in America. I lived in the UK/Germany for quite a long time, and there, the opportunity is very limited, especially if one is not "white European" with a European last name.

You say there is discrimination in Europe.

Also in USA too. lol.

Not jobless. The pay is low in the UK compared to what I wanted. In my profession, the low pay is different than other professions, of course. It may not be low for other professions. They are unfair on promotions too. I have been living outside Pakistan for 35 years. USA is the perfect mix for me and my family.

I think I have a lot of information about both UK and USA and can safely say the pay rate in many professions is very similar. The standard of living is also similar but it varies from job to job.

Let me make a confession. I pretend to live in Pakistan because I want to keep a low profile. But just like you, I was blessed to experience 4 continents.

Eastern Europe and parts of Africa to keep the list short, about 30 countries in total and several hundred cities in multiple trips combined. For example just in Italy, I visited Rome, Catania, Sicily, Lamezia, Venice, Milan, Vereze, Como and couple of other less popular places in at least 5 visits that I can recall from top of my head.

I was blessed to enjoy the privilege of immersing myself in these countries as a local, experiencing life through the eyes of their citizens. For example I lived in a small property in Denmark alongside my friend for few days who are sharing the property with Pakistani and Indian students who were enrolled in PHD programmes and were distributing newspaper at 2am of the night on their bicycles. I often visited friends and engaged with locals, gaining insight into their lifestyle and culture.

So after experiencing all this, I can safely say that UK is by far the best place to live in Europe if not the first world country. You can have your opinion and I respect that but in my opinion, you are comparing the worst of UK to the best of your country. It happens when you live in a country of your choice. Earning 6 figures is not a big deal as I personally know many people earning 6 figures in UK in British pounds. I unfortunately do not earn 6 figures but it is enough to pay my bills.

A gentleman mentioned that the average salary in the UK is £30,000. Please do not compare the salary of an unskilled labor worker with that of a professional. Similarly, comparing a smaller city like Bolton to the rest of the UK is like comparing Kala Shah Kaku to the rest of Pakistan. This is not the right way to judge the country.

An electrician earns about £100,000 if he has 3-5 years of experience. Some gas engineers are earning £120,000+ but £70k+ is a normal rate… if working with a good construction company and I haven’t started mentioning solicitors earning £150,000 if working with a reputable company. In my profession I expect to earn about £70,000 but some IT engineers are earning £120,000. The Doctors (GP) earn about £10,000 per session which is 3 hour per day x 52 weeks and about £100 per hour if doing overtime. To simplify this maths, if you are doing 2 sessions per day (morning and evening), 4 days a week, you are earning £80,000. The hospital doctors, if working under NHS earn minimum of £50,000 but they may earn £150,000+ if working in private care.

I know people in US earn similar or may be a bit more but it won’t be too much difference.

I remember I used to earn £3.20 per hour in 2004 when I was 16. Now the minimum wage will be £11.44 from next month. An average person with unskilled job expect to earn £15 per hour. A semi skilled person such as a lorry driver expect to earn £18 to £35 per hour depending on the company. A taxi driver earns £20-25 per hour in London or let’s say £1200-1500 per week. Please do not compare these salaries with Bolton or the north. The salary in Bolton cannot pay the rent in London which is about £2600 per month for a 3 bedroom house, let alone the bills.

I have given examples of other professions in my last post. The point is, for skilled workers the salary is not as good as some other countries but it is still higher than 90% of the first world countries. Ireland in comparison offer more. Norway and Switzerland are also better than UK, the USA in my opinion is very similar.

You are very young ! I completed my Masters before you were born . lol. US is too big in term of popuation and the scale of the economy to be compared with any other country. I have a different professional background, which I will not discuss here. I do not compare my case with unskilled minimum wages or manual labor.

Sir I gave an example of doctors, solicitors and other professional at the same time. I am aware of most professions but the government jobs pays the least so you took a right decision to move to USA.

An average soldier earns starting salary of £23,000 in UK which is half the average salary of a barber. I have a college friend who switched his career into finance and was earning £15,000 per month after taxes when I met him last time about 3 years ago. He works at Barclays Bank, Canary Wharf. Besides the government jobs, UK offers similar salary to any first world country be it USA, Canada or Japan.
