India and China are discussing resuming border trade five years after it was halted, foreign ministry officials on both sides have said, as US tariffs disrupt the global trade order.

Past trade across the icy and high-altitude Himalayan border passes between the neighbours was usually small in volume, but any resumption is significant for its symbolism.

The two major economic powers have long competed for strategic influence across South Asia.

But caught in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump's tariff regime, the countries have moved to mend ties.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected for talks in New Delhi on Monday, according to Indian media, after his counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visited Beijing in July.

That, as well as agreements to resume direct flights and issue tourist visas, has been seen as an effort to rebuild a relationship damaged after a deadly border clash in 2020 between their nations' troops.

"For a long time, China-India border trade cooperation has played an important role in improving the lives of people living along the border," China's foreign ministry said in a statement to AFP on Thursday.

It added that the two sides have "reached a consensus on cross-border exchanges and cooperation, including resumption of border trade".

New Delhi's junior foreign minister, Kirti Vardhan Singh, told parliament last week that "India has engaged with the Chinese side to facilitate the resumption of border trade".

No restart date was given by either side.

Successive US administrations have seen India as a longstanding ally with like-minded interests when it comes to China.

India is part of the Quad security alliance with the United States, as well as Australia and Japan.

But ties between New Delhi and Washington have been strained by Trump's ultimatum for India to end its purchases of Russian oil, a key source of revenue for Moscow as it wages its military offensive in Ukraine.

The United States will double new import tariffs on India from 25 per cent to 50 per cent by August 27 if New Delhi does not switch crude suppliers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to Indian media, might also visit China in late August. It would be Modi's first visit since 2018, although it has not been confirmed officially.

Beijing has said that "China welcomes Prime Minister Modi" for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit opening on 31 August.​

India inaugurates new military airbase close to China border, source says

India's air force chief made the inaugural landing of a military transport aircraft at a new airbase capable of fighter jet operations close to the disputed Himalayan border with China, a defence official said on Thursday.

The move comes amid a thaw in ties between the nuclear-armed neighbours, following a milestone pact last October to ease military tension along their de facto border and a visit this year to China by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh landed the C-130J aircraft on Wednesday at the Mudh-Nyoma air force station in Ladakh, perched at a height of about 13,000 feet (4,000 m), added the official, who sought anonymity as the matter is a sensitive one.

The Indian Air Force and the defence ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The new airbase, the region's third such key station, is just 30 km (19 miles) from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

"This new airfield in Ladakh, capable of fighter operations, will add a new challenge for both of our adversaries," retired Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor wrote on X, referring to neighbours China and Pakistan.

China has an airfield at a similar height, he added.

Mistrust persists between China and India despite the thaw, Indian analysts and officials say, with the Indian Army chief pointing this year to continued heightened troop presence and infrastructure build-up on the border by both sides.

India and China share a poorly demarcated border that stretches 3,800 km (2,400 miles) and has been disputed since the 1950s. They fought a brief but brutal war over it in 1962.

Ties soured after a deadly border clash in 2020, before their 2024 pact brought a thaw and easing of some curbs, allowing resumption of direct flights and two-way visits.​

Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday he told Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that the neighbours should tackle key aspects of relations, such as fair market access and trade balance, in New Delhi's effort to repair ties with Beijing.

Relations between the nuclear-armed nations improved in 2024, ending years of ‌friction dating from a border clash in 2020, after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in October 2024.

"There are also concerns about predictability of supply chains ... We also need to agree on the meetings of various mechanisms and platforms as per our mutual priorities," Jaishankar said on X.

"Peace and tranquility in the border areas is obviously the prerequisite for normal ties," Jaishankar added after the meeting, held on the sidelines of a regional gathering in the Philippine capital of Manila.

"Since October 2024, both sides have engaged to ensure that important objective. This will continue to need our constant attention."

India and China have resumed direct flights and New Delhi has cut red tape to speed up approvals of business visas for Chinese professionals since October 2024.

Both will also resume border trade from 1 August, following a six-year gap, domestic media said.

India’s $132 billion worth of imports from China in fiscal year 2025/26 were its highest from any nation, with a deficit of more than $100 billion in their total trade of $151.10 billion.

India, which imports inputs and machinery critical for its factories, eased curbs this year on Chinese investments in some industries, a major step towards rebuilding ties with Beijing.

In 2020, New Delhi tightened scrutiny of investments from Chinese companies, as relations soured after their troops clashed on their largely undemarcated Himalayan frontier, killing 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.​
