Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus BSS

Asserting that the July rekindled the people’s hope for a just, equal and corruption-free country, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called upon all to come forward towards building a Bangladesh together where tyranny will never rise again.

He made the call in a message issued today on the occasion of the July Uprising Day.

In his message, the Chief Adviser said, “July rekindled our hope - a hope for a just, equal and corruption-free Bangladesh.”

He said the sacrifice of thousands has gifted them this rare opportunity for national reform and all must protect it at any cost.

The fallen autocrats and their self-serving allies remain active, conspiring to derail the nation’s progress, he said, adding “Let us stand united beyond all divisions to confront and defeat these threats. Together, we will build a Bangladesh where tyranny will never rise again.”

Prof Yunus said, “Today (August 5) marks an unforgettable chapter in the history of Bangladesh. It was on this very day, one year ago, that the July Uprising reached its triumph, liberating our beloved nation from the grip of long-standing fascist rule.”

He extended his heartfelt congratulations to the people of Bangladesh whose united struggle brought about this historic achievement.

On this solemn day, he remembered with deep reverence the brave youth, workers, labourers and professionals who sacrificed their lives while confronting the fascist forces.

“My profound respect goes to every martyr of the uprising. I remember with deep gratitude all the July warriors who were injured, permanently disabled and even lost their eyesight. The nation shall forever honour their sacrifice,” Prof Yunus said.

He said the July Uprising was a collective eruption against sixteen years of oppressive authoritarian misrule.

At its core, he said, it was a fight to establish a new system free from discrimination, corruption and tyranny, while the goal was to restore democracy and return the country to the hands of its people.

The Chief Adviser said since assuming responsibility, the Interim Government has undertaken extensive reform efforts across all sectors of the state to fulfill these aspirations.

The trials related to the July killings are progressing swiftly, he said, adding that measures have been initiated to preserve the memory of the July martyrs and rehabilitate the injured July fighters.

“To accelerate our democratic journey, dialogue continues with political parties and stakeholders on necessary reforms, including the political and electoral systems.”

Prof Yunus said the Interim Government is committed to restoring the state power to the people through a peaceful, fair and transparent election, as part of a sustainable political solution.

Has interim govt been up to public's expectation?

HSC students stormed into the Bangladesh Secretariat to press home their demand for auto promotion to the next class in late July, 2025.

The interim government inherited the virtual wreckage of a state left by the autocracy toppled in the popular upsurge. The financial sector, especially the banks were in a shambles. The ousted autocracy would like to portray a rosy picture of the economy with the help of manufactured data that the pliable government agencies of the time like the Bangladesh Bank (BB), the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and so on were ready to supply for the asking. However, the post-upsurge interim government was under no such obligation to meet and produce fictitious figures and present those before the nation as a proof of its success. Neither has it any obligation to answer to any quarters except for the abstract authority of the people which brought it to power. But politicians and critics, who have been demanding everything under the sun from the interim government did not prove to be vocal or bold enough during the past one and a half decades of autocracy. However, the real stakeholders, the distraught ordinary people, have so far remained the silent observers of the post-upsurge madness among the traditional quarters in society who always grab and enjoy the fruits of any change, revolutionary or otherwise, in society

However, now, only a month and a couple of weeks left till the election day scheduled for February 12, 2026, the performance of the interim government so far would obviously be subjected to scrutiny by different quarters, inimical or friendly. Performance on the law-and-order front over the past 17 months that the interim government has been in office can ideally be a measure of how it fared. Now, had the government been an elected one, the answer would obviously be in the negative, because the constituents of the elected parities in the government would expect that their leaders would make good on their election promises. But the interim government formed after the mass upsurge was not an elected one. Then who is it answerable to? It was rather the product of an abnormal situation in which the past government was overthrown in a popular uprising. The uprising was a bloody one as the autocracy in power tried to crush the revolution with brutal force costing the lives of, according to an estimate, over 1,400 young men, women and children and causing grievous wounds to thousands of others. The most important aspect of the uprising was that it was one led by the students of universities, colleges and even schools and in which the common people participated spontaneously in large numbers. But when the autocratic government suddenly fell and its top leadership fled the country, a power vacuum was created which was required to be urgently filled up. The students and the masses who spearheaded the upsurge had no experience on how to form a government and that too, in such an unforeseen emergency. Neither had they any clue to what would be the nature of such a government. However, the major and minor political parties, who had just been sitting on the fence during the days of the students' and common people's bloody street battles in July last year, did not wait long to stake their claim as a shareholder of the pie of power. Though the stopgap interim government was formed to meet an emergency, they still went on haranguing it on issues of propriety. They even raised the question of if its creation followed the standard formula according to convention. Similarly, those who claimed to be experts on the issues of governance and constitutionality came up with a welter of formulae and recommendations. But all those suggestions were applicable for governments formed under normal and predictable circumstances.

The armchair revolutionaries, too, started to lecture the government from the safe distance of talk shows on television channels or the social media. But no one was ready to help the interim government, which was grappling with the void and the volatile situation left by the fallen government. In fact, the country was a complete basket case when the interim government took office after the fall of the autocratic regime. So, the expectations from interim government could not be very high, despite all the cacophony of various clamouring quarters to the contrary. If there is any quarter it is answerable to, it is the faceless masses of the people who made supreme sacrifices to bring it to power. But since the masses have no institutional shape to which a government might be accountable to, the interim government, in the ultimate analysis, is answerable to its own conscience.

So, one should not be surprised by the recent developments in which a section of the students who did not share power in the interim government are now questioning it if the government's performance so far had been up to the expectation of the students and the common people who had laid down their lives before it came to power, or if it betrayed the very cause it was supposed to serve. Especially, after Sharif Osman Hadi , a leader of the 'Inqilab Moncho', a political and cultural platform of a section of students who led the anti-autocracy upsurge, was shot dead in broad daylight while he was on the campaign trail. Notably, late Hadi was a candidate from his Inqilab Manch in the upcoming general election. The Namaz-e-Janaja (funeral prayer) of assassinated Hadi saw an extraordinarily large attendance by the shocked members of the public. So, the interim government needs to show its seriousness not just in words, but in action about bringing Hadi's assassins to justice.

Also, questions are being raised about the integrity of the members of the advisory council that run the interim government. One may excuse the interim government for the many instances of failures that go to its credit during the seventeen months that it has been in office. But what cannot be excused is the failure to remain incorruptible that was expected of it. Could it fulfill that requirement, if it is not to fail the cause of the martyrs of the July upsurge?

Tarique Rahman has met Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka, his first family visit to the advisor’s residence since returning to Bangladesh last month.

At 7:28pm on Thursday, the BNP chairman’s flag-bearing car entered the State Guest House Jamuna, accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman.

Tarique returned to Bangladesh on Dec 25 after more than 17 years abroad.

He had earlier spoken to Yunus by phone upon arrival at Shahjalal International Airport and met him briefly at the funeral prayers of his mother Khaleda Zia on Dec 31.

The latest meeting follows a string of recent contacts between the two.

On Jun 13 last year, Tarique held a one-and-a-half-hour private discussion with Yunus at London’s Dorchester Hotel.

Soon after, National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman Chowdhury announced that the next general election would be held in February 2026 once preparations were complete.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called for the publication of a white paper at the end of the interim government’s tenure to inform the public about the extent to which the government -- formed under the leadership of Prof Muhammad Yunus -- has fulfilled its responsibilities in line with the internationally promoted concept of “three zeros”.

“Alongside the international advocacy surrounding the ‘three zeros’ concept, I believe people of the country will want to know the extent to which responsibilities have been fulfilled nationally in relation to these three issues,” TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said at a human chain today on Dhaka’s Manik Mia Avenue.

TIB organised the programme marking the UN-declared International Clean Energy Day 2026.

Prof Yunus promotes the vision of zero poverty, zero unemployment, and zero carbon emissions globally. However, the TIB executive director said he believes that after assuming office, the government acted in ways that contradict Prof Yunus’s advocacy on these three fronts.

“As a UN member state, Bangladesh’s interim government has failed to observe Clean Energy Day,” he said.

He asked whether the government has taken any initiative that a future elected government could have carried forward.

Iftekharuzzaman also criticised the interim government’s draft of Energy and Power Sector Master Plan (EPSMP 2025), saying the plan is dependent on fossil fuels.

He alleged that one of the defining features of the interim government’s activities is the absence of a participatory approach.

At the human chain, Ashna Islam, co-coordinator of TIB’s Clean Energy Project, presented a concept paper on renewable energy and good governance for sustainable development.

In the paper, she presented several recommendations on behalf of TIB. These include political parties’ commitment to gradually phase out the use of fossil fuels and increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix; taking opinions of civil society, neutral experts and relevant stakeholders before finalising the draft of Energy and Power Sector Master Plan; adopting policies in the energy sector to achieve a ‘net-zero’ target.

Chief adviser’s total assets exceed Tk 156m

The asset statements of the advisers of the interim government have been published. The cabinet division released the information today, Tuesday.

As of 30 June this year, the total assets of chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus stood at more than Tk 156.24 million. A year earlier, his assets amounted to Tk 140.14 million. This means his assets increased by Tk 16.10 million in a year.

The chief adviser said his assets increased due to the encashment of savings certificates, an increase in savings and fixed deposits, and shares received through inheritance, among other reasons.

The total assets of the chief adviser’s wife, Afrozi Yunus, stood at Tk 12.76 million. It was Tk 21.18 million in the previous fiscal year. As such, her assets declined by nearly Tk 8.42 million over one year.

Under the Income Tax Act, assets refer to the combined value of a taxpayer’s movable and immovable property, as well as financial and capital assets.

In an address to the nation on 25 August 2024, the chief adviser reiterated a clear stance against corruption and said that all advisers would publish their asset statements at the earliest.

He added that this practice would gradually be made regular and mandatory for all government officials.

He also mentioned that an ordinance would be enacted to appoint an ombudsman, as promised under Article 77 of the constitution, to take action against corruption at the state level.

On 1 October that year, the “Policy on the Disclosure of Income and Asset Statements of Advisers of the Interim Government and Persons of Equivalent Status, 2024” was issued.

According to the policy, advisers of the interim government and persons of equivalent status engaged in government or republic service must submit their income and asset statements to the chief adviser through the cabinet division within 15 working days of the final date for filing income tax returns each year.

If a spouse has separate income, that must also be declared. The chief adviser will publish the statements through an appropriate method at his discretion.

However, the delay in publishing the statements had drawn criticism. Speaking on the matter, the chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam said last Monday that the asset statements of the interim government’s advisers would be published within one or two days.

Following the fall of the Awami League government through a student-people's mass uprising on 5 August 2024, an interim government was formed on 8 August under the leadership of Professor Muhammad Yunus. New advisers were appointed in several phases.

After additions and changes, the advisory council currently consists of 21 members, including the chief adviser. In addition, four individuals are serving as special assistants, special envoys, and national security adviser with the rank of adviser. Four special assistants to the chief adviser are serving with the rank of state minister. The asset statements of all of them were published today.
