Police have arrested former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda from the capital’s Uttara.

Residents of the area detained him on Sunday evening and handed him over to the police.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara West Police Station Md Hafizur Rahman confirmed the arrest to the media.

He will be shown arrested in a case filed with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, the OC said.

The police detained former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda from the capital’s Uttara area Sunday evening.

He was detained hours after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party filed a case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, three former chief election commissioners and 20 others for their roles in three controversial national elections held in 2014, 2018 and 2024.

An angry mob cordoned the former CEC in the capital’s Uttara area and put a ‘garland of shoes’ on him in the presence of the police, according to a video of the incident that went viral on social media.

The metropolitan police’s detective branch joint commissioner for south and admin, Mohammad Nasirul Islam, said that the police rescued Nurul Huda from agitated people and handed him over to a DB team at about 7:30pm on Sunday.

‘He was taken to the DB office on Mintoo Road in the city at about 8:00pm,’ he added.

He said that the former CEC would be produced before a metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka showing him arrested in the case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station

BNP national executive committee member Salahuddin Khan filed the case with the police station Sunday morning against 24 people, including former chief election commissioners, EC commissioners and other officials involved in conducting the 10th, 11th and 12th national elections alleging irregularities and partisan conduct.

The named accused in the case include ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her government’s home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda and Kazi Habibul Awal, former election commissioners retired Brigadier General Ahsan Habib, Alamgir Hossain and Anisur Rahman, and former inspectors general of police Javed Patowari and Benazir Ahmed, according to the case documents.

‘We have recorded the case. The plaintiff named 24 people, including three former CECs, as accused in the case,’ Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station officer-in-charge Emaul Haque told New Age.New age fashion

He said that although the case did not mention any particular unnamed accused, it said that other people were also involved in manipulating the elections.

The BNP said in the case that 153 Awami League candidates were elected unopposed in the 2014 parliamentary election, boycotted by the BNP and other opposition political parties. The election was led by CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.

In the 11th election, held in December 2018 under CEC KM Nurul Huda, the BNP alleged ballot-stuffing at the night before the voting day.

The 12th election in 2024, overseen by CEC Kazi Habibul Awal, was branded by the BNP as a ‘dummy election’. The election was also boycotted by the BNP and other opposition political parties.

The Awami League regime was ousted on August 5, 2024 amid a student-led mass uprising and Professor Muhammad Yunus-led interim government took over the office three days later.

Earlier this month, chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus instructed the authorities to form a committee to investigate the roles of those involved in conducting the three elections.

On Sunday, the BNP submitted a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner alleging large-scale irregularities and electoral misconduct during the country’s 11th National Parliamentary Election held in 2018.

In the letter, signed by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, accused the then EC, government officials, and ruling party affiliates of colluding to obstruct a fair electoral process.

BNP claimed that its candidates and those from the Jatiya Oikya Front faced widespread attacks, arrests, and intimidation throughout the election period.

It alleged that, despite earlier assurances from the EC about a neutral electoral environment, law enforcement agencies, with backing from the commission and the then ruling party, carried out coordinated crackdowns on opposition leaders and supporters after the election schedule was announced.

The party further claimed that 13 people were killed and 16 of its candidates were severely injured during the campaign, with opposition campaign activities being disrupted nationwide.

The letter also accused the commission and the law enforcement of facilitating midnight voting alleging that ballot boxes were stuffed with votes for ruling party candidates before the polling day.

The BNP stated that it had submitted at least seven formal memorandums to the commission during the election period but received no substantive response.

Instead, the party alleged, the commission aided the manipulation by publishing results it deemed unconstitutional and contrary to electoral laws.

The letter also listed numerous officials—including district commissioners, police and election officers, and senior members of agencies like Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh, National Security Intelligence, Special Branch, and DGFI—whom it accused of direct involvement in the alleged vote rigging.

Concluding the letter, Mirza Fakhrul urged the current CEC to take immediate legal action against those responsible and to annul the 2018 results.

Interim government in statement last night said former chief election commissioner Nurul Huda was arrested by police in connection with a specific case.

The government took note of the chaotic situation created by a "mob" during the arrest and the physical assault on the accused, read the statement issued by the chief adviser's press wing.

"The government once again urges all citizens not to take the law into their own hands.

"All accused individuals will be brought to justice in accordance with the country's laws, and decisions regarding sub judice matters and individuals will be made by the courts," said the statement.

Assaulting the accused and subjecting them to physical abuse is illegal, contrary to the rule of law, and constitutes a criminal offence, it said.

The law enforcement agencies will identify those responsible for inciting unrest and "forming a mob" and will take appropriate action, it added.

Former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda has told a Dhaka court that the Election Commission (EC) should not be held accountable for controversies surrounding elections.

During a remand hearing at the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman on Monday, the judge asked Huda whether he believed he had violated his oath of office.

Huda replied in the negative.

He said: “The Election Commission comprises five members, supported by 1.6 to 1.7 million staff across the country. From Dhaka, it’s not possible to directly monitor how elections are conducted in remote regions.”

As the judge reminded him of his oath to ensure free and fair elections, Huda said: “Once results are announced, the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. If irregularities are found, the High Court can take action.

“The commission cannot cancel an election after the fact—that would amount to interfering with the judiciary.”

He added, “The prosecution has alleged bribery in the elections. But if an election is controversial, that doesn’t automatically make the commission liable.”

Police sought 10 days to quiz Huda in custody in a case filed by the BNP over holding elections “without the people’s mandate”.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarkar, the investigation officer, presented 11 arguments in support of the remand petition.

Following arguments from both sides, the court rejected Huda’s bail and cancellation of remand pleas, granting police four days to interrogate him.

Huda was brought to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrates’ Court around 3pm and kept in the court lockup. At 4:10pm, he was taken to the courtroom. He stood quietly in the dock with his head down and hands behind his back, later stepping forward to respond during the hearing.

Omar Faruq Faruqi, the state prosecutor, argued in favour of the remand, saying Huda played a “central role” in establishing what he called deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s “fascism.”

“He deceived the public,” Faruqi said, alleging that Huda oversaw the 2018 election where instructions were given to deputy commissioners to manipulate votes the night before polling.

“They handed out money, biryani, and held celebrations at night. Journalists asked him about it and he shamelessly replied that voting had already happened,” he said.

“He is referred to as the ‘midnight election commissioner’. I don’t know how he faces his family. He betrayed the nation,” the prosecutor added.

In response, defence counsel Tawhidul Islam said the prosecution had not adequately addressed the legal basis for remand and was relying on “narratives”. He argued that the charges against Huda are all bailable and that seeking remand under bailable sections was “legally flawed”.

He challenged the prosecution saying, “Show us the law that permits remand under bailable offences.”

Tensions rose during the hearing as some defence lawyers began shouting, prompting commotion in the courtroom.

Another defence lawyer said Huda had fought in the 1971 Liberation War as a sub-commander under Sector 9 Commander Major Mohammad Abdul Jalil and had led operations to liberate Patuakhali from occupying forces.

The case was filed by the BNP on Sunday with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police, naming 19 individuals including Huda, election commissioners who served during the 10th, 11th, and 12th general elections, and Hasina.

Huda was detained by a group of individuals at his Uttara residence just six hours after being named in the case. He was manhandled and humiliated before being handed over to police, who later showed his arrest in the case and took him to the Detective Branch office on Minto Road.

A court on Monday placed former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on a four-day remand in a case lodged for allegedly manipulating the national election.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mustafizur Rahman passed the order as police produced the former CEC before the court and pleaded to place him on a 10-day remand in the case filed with the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

Earlier, the police produced the former CEC in the courtroom at around 4.10 pm while he was brought to the court around 3.05 pm and was kept at the lockup on the ground floor.

BNP national executive committee member Md Salah Uddin Khan filed the case on Sunday morning against 24 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former CECs, for manipulating the national elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024.

Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, four former Inspectors General of Police (IGP), several former Election Commissioners and former Chiefs of Special Branch (SB), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) had been accused in the case.

Earlier on June 22, police took KM Nurul Huda into their custody from his residence at sector no: 5 of Uttara as a mob apprehended the former CEC at around 7pm.

Later, he was shown arrested in the case.

Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested former chief election commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul from the Mogbazar area of the capital on Wednesday morning.

Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of media and public relations division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo.

Earlier, police arrested another former CEC KM Nurul Huda on Sunday. A mob stormed his residence in Uttara, dragged him outside, placed a garland of shoes around his neck, and handed him over to police.

Officers later said he had been arrested in a Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police-station case filed by BNP leader Salahuddin Khan over allegations that included ballot-stuffing on the night before polling day.

A court on Monday granted police four days to interrogate him in remand.

Salahuddin Khan lodged a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on Sunday naming 24 people—including three former CECs—on charges of holding facial elections.

The accused include former CEC Kazi Rokibuddin Ahmed, who was in office during the 2014 parliamentary elections, former CEC AKM Nurul Huda, who held office during the 2018 parliamentary elections, and former CEC Kazi Habibul Awal in office during the 2024 parliamentary elections.
