The origins of the Kumbh Mela are rooted in the ancient Hindu legend of the Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean of milk. According to this myth, gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) jointly churned the ocean to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality. During the ensuing struggle for possession, drops of Amrit fell at four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.
