Neuro-Endovascular field: PINS, University of Missouri to hold joint training​

LAHORE: An agreement has been signed between the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences (PINS) Lahore and the University of Missouri, USA for a joint training program in Neuro-Endovascular field under which postgraduate fellows from Pakistan will be trained in this field.

As per agreement fellows from PINS will visit the University of Missouri in United States to attain expertise and participate in training courses on advanced neurosurgery while this Program will contribute towards the development of Pakistan’s medical field in Neurosurgery.

Dr. Farhan Siddique, Program Director PINS and Micheal Ortiz, Chief Resident of University of Missouri signed this MoU along with Executive Director PINS Prof. Asif Bashir regarding the fellowship program and exchange the documents.

Executive Director PINS Prof. Asif Bashir said they will continue bilateral ties and will ensure mutual cooperation with international organizations to provide the most advanced technical expertise in the field of neurosurgery in Pakistan.

“This is the first time that PINS has presented six research papers at the World Federation of Neurosurgery Conference which was held in Cape Town, South Africa,” he said, adding: “We are going to start a stroke intervention program for paralysis patients at PINS, due to which the stroke patients will be able to get immediate treatment and can save themselves from physical disability. We encourage our young neurosurgeons to develop themselves and make Pakistan’s name brighten all over the world.”

Workshop on mental health held​

FAISALABAD: A workshop on ‘Mental Health Awareness and Stress Management’ was arranged by Cadet College Faisalabad for its faculty and training staff. Mrs Anum Hameed, Ph.D. scholar was the source person.

The worthy guest speaker has an experience of counseling at Pakistan Military Academy under the supervision of Brigadier Dr. Shoaib Kiani (retd) SI (M), Ex Chief Psychologist Pakistan Army.

The participants of the workshop displayed a keen interest in stress management techniques. The worthy counselor also conducted counseling sessions with selected faculty members, training staff, and cadets.

At the concluding session of the workshop, Birg Dr. Abdul Hameed SI (M) Commandant Cadet College Faisalabad emphasized the faculty and training staff to use the stress management techniques for the well-being of the cadets.

Pakistani Company Forges Nutritional Partnership with China​

YIBIN- Pakistan's Searle Company signed a cooperation agreement with Jiangxi Nuotai Biotechnology Limited in Yichun, China on January 9th. Over the next five years, the two companies will collaborate in infant nutrition and adult nutrition.

According to the cooperation agreement, the Chinese side will apply for the registration of the trademark and manufacture the collaborative products within China. Searle Company, on the other hand, will take charge of imports, sales, and after-sales service of the collaborative products. This collaboration is expected to contribute to the advancement and innovation in the nutrition industry.

Known for its extensive international presence in 18 countries, Searle Company stands as a leading player in the pharmaceutical industry in Pakistan. The representative of Searle Company expressed his confidence inthe collaboration with Chinese company in nutrition industry, "This cooperation will provide more nutritious supplementary food for children in Pakistan and offer sugar-free nutritional products for the large diabetic population in the region."

"This partnership will not only accelerate the cooperation between Pakistan and China in the nutrition sector, but also pave the way for the global promotion of our collaborative products," stated the representative of Jiangxi Nuotai.

First-ever Global Health Security Summit starts in Pakistan​

The first-ever two-day Global Health Security Summit commenced on Wednesday to address the critical challenges posed by global health threats.

This summit bringing together Health Ministers from member states, international health leaders, experts, officials from leading health organizations, health technical experts, global partners, donors and stakeholders.
The summit, organized under the theme “Together for a Healthy Planet,” aims to foster international cooperation, knowledge exchange, and strategic partnerships to enhance global health security.

The government of Pakistan has invited distinguished speakers, including health ministers, and globally recognized experts in the field of global health security from across the world.

The participants will have the unique opportunity to engage in insightful discussions and contribute to shaping a comprehensive Islamabad Declaration that will be issued at the culmination of the Summit.

Addressing the opening session of the summit caretaker federal minister for health Dr. Nadeem Jan stressed a shared vision where health security is seen as a universal right and the strength of a nation’s health systems is measured not only by its capacity to respond to crises but also by its ability to prevent, detect, and mitigate health threats.
He said that the vision of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) is not merely a theoretical construct, it is a shared commitment to building robust and resilient public health systems worldwide.

He said that Pakistan has been an ardent supporter of GHSA, steering collective efforts towards a safer and more secure world.

He underscored the importance of multisectoral collaboration, where the interplay of health, environment, agriculture, and security is crucial.

He said that this is not a challenge confined to borders, it is a shared responsibility that necessitates a collective response.

Dr. Nadeem Jan said that the significance of our collective efforts cannot be overstated, especially against the backdrop of recent global health crises, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

He said, “We have witnessed the interconnectedness of our nations and the imperative of a unified response to emerging health threats.”
He said, “In the face of complex global health challenges, this summit serves as a beacon of collaboration and innovation.”

“Together, we embark on a journey to strengthen our collective defenses, share knowledge, and chart a resilient course for the well-being of our nations”, he added.

While encouraging robust discussions, innovative solutions, and collaborative strategies, the minister anticipated that the outcomes would not only strengthen individual health systems but fortify the global health security architecture.

He added this summit is not just a forum for dialogue, it is a catalyst for actionable outcomes.

As the current chair of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Global Health Security Agenda, the minister reiterated the commitment of the country as Pakistan has been resolute in its commitment since the initiative’s inception in 2015.

He said Pakistan leads in addressing critical issues amidst the ever-evolving health landscape.

He added Pakistan is committed to facilitate dynamic discussions that highlight key problems and pave the way for innovative solutions.

The summit stands as a testament to the commitment of the global community to collectively safeguard the well-being of nations.

Federal Secretary Ministry of National Health Services, Iftikhar Ali Shalwani underscored the importance of the summit and said that the summit symbolizes our unwavering commitment to furthering a safer world, where health security knows no borders.

“Our collective mission over the next two days is to chart a course toward a future where health security is not a privilege but a fundamental human right, the secretary shared while making the inaugural remarks.”

As the world has recently experienced a huge catastrophe in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to have far-reaching implications, there is a dire need to work together and learn from each other to explore mutual avenues to build an equitable, resilient, and sustainable system to ensure global health security.

The summit will cover the broader areas that include the impact of global health security on national health security, pandemic preparedness and response, climate change and emerging public health threats, multi-sectoral coordination in the context of “one health”, sustainable financing and global health security and social implication during pandemic.

A workshop titled ‘Developing MCQs for Post-graduate Students Using ChatGPT’ was conducted at Indus University of Health Sciences on 15th February 2024! Facilitated by Prof. Faridah Amir Ali, Dr. Shafaq Sultana, and Dr. Madiha Ata, this pre-conference event for the International Conference of Medical Education 2024 by CPSP explored the innovative use of ChatGPT in crafting contextually relevant MCQs.

Attendees gained hands-on experience, learned best practices, and networked with peers, fostering advancements in post-graduate medical education assessment.

A collaborative effort between the Department of Health Professions Education and Indus College of Family Medicine and Public Health showcased a commitment to enhancing pedagogical practices in the ever-evolving medical education landscape.

CMH Risalpur, CMH Chunian, CMH RYK, CMH Landi Kotal, and CMH Mailsi are not closing permanently. Instead, they are being transformed into Fauji Foundation Hospitals to uphold high-quality healthcare standards.

The decision aims to ensure that retired soldiers and their families receive top-notch care in their vicinity.

To streamline operations, human resources are being strategically relocated to match the workload at these CMHs.

Additionally, healthcare personnel are being centralized from medical battalions and smaller CMHs, with the Fauji Foundation providing support to meet human resource needs at these establishments.

These CMHs will continue operating under the oversight of the Medical Directorate. Importantly, the policy regarding laboratory and diagnostic tests for entitled patients remains unchanged.

Pakistan’s Maple Leaf Cement subsidiary to construct $110mn hospital in Islamabad​

Novacare Hospitals (Private) Limited, a subsidiary of Maple Leaf Cement Factory Limited (MLCF), will construct a $110 million state-of-the-art hospital in Islamabad.

The development was shared by MLCF in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday.

“Novacare Hospitals (Private) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company, will start constructing a state-of-the-art hospital in Islamabad, and has signed an international affiliation agreement with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, a leading UK teaching hospital group,” read the notice.

MLCF in its notice shared that the total investment in the project will be $110 million, and the hospital will be located on a 50-Kanal plot in DHA Phase-V, Islamabad.

“The 250-bed hospital will have a covered area of 550,000 square feet and will provide comprehensive tertiary healthcare across 28 clinical services,” it added.

MLCF shared that the hospital is being designed by HKS Inc., a US-based global design firm.

“As a result of its affiliation with Imperial College Healthcare, Novacare will benefit from the expertise of a leading UK teaching hospital group. Novacare will gain expert advisory input from Imperial College Healthcare on models of care, services, and staffing, and aims to implement their clinical standards and protocols.
