BNP Chairperson Khaleda Ziaโ€™s nomination papers have been submitted for the Dinajpur-3 constituency in the parliamentary polls.

Local BNP leaders and activists submitted the nomination papers on behalf of the former prime minister at 4pm on Sunday.

BNPโ€™s central leader Syed Jahangir Alam, a former mayor of the Dinajpur Municipality, bought nomination papers two hours before Khaleda entered the race from the constituency.

Jahangir earlier had said he collected nomination papers at his partyโ€™s instruction. He was present when the Khaleda nomination papers were submitted.

BNP activists started chanting slogans against Jahangir after learning of his move to contest in the general election from the seat. Jahangir managed to leave the election office immediately.

โ€œWe donโ€™t know who instructed Jahangir to collect the nomination papers and why,โ€ said Mofazzal Hossain, BNPโ€™s Dinajpur district president.

The health condition of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who is being treated in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital, has worsened and become extremely critical, members of her medical board said on Monday night.

โ€œKhaleda Ziaโ€™s condition is extremely critical. She is being kept on life support and is now receiving regular dialysis,โ€ said her medical board member Dr Ziaul Haque.

He said whenever the dialysis is stopped, her physical condition worsens significantly. โ€œDue to her advanced age and multiple health complications, it is not possible to provide all treatments at the same time.โ€

Another board member Dr Zafar Iqbal said Khaleda Ziaโ€™s condition could be described as โ€œcritically illโ€.

โ€œWe seek prayers from everyone. Some further tests have been advised, and decisions will be taken after the results are available. She remains under treatment in the CCU,โ€ he said.

Another physician of the medical board, wishing anonymity, said the doctors are making their best efforts, adding that the rest now depends on the will of Allah.

โ€œShe is elderly, and many long-standing illnesses have resurfaced at this age. Some of these conditions could not be treated properly at the right time earlier. Recovery from multiple complications has become very difficult due to her age,โ€ he said.

The physician said the BNP chiefโ€™s condition fluctuates between slight improvement and deterioration. โ€œShe is under constant observation, and new tests are being conducted every day.โ€

After his return from London last Thursday, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman visited Evercare Hospital to see his mother.

He regularly visits her after completing his daily programmes and stayed beside her hospital bed for several hours before leaving late at night. Tarique went straight to Evercare Hospital after spending more than three hours at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan.

In a brief address to party leaders and workers gathered outside the party office, he urged everyone to pray for his motherโ€™s recovery.

Khaleda Zia has been receiving treatment in the CCU of Evercare Hospital for more than a month. Her treatment is being conducted under the supervision of cardiologist Professor Shahabuddin Talukder.

Following a medical board meeting on Saturday night, Khaleda Ziaโ€™s personal physician Professor AZM Zahid Hossain said her condition remains complex and critical.

โ€œHer condition is extremely complex, and she is now going through a critical moment. If, by the grace of Almighty Allah and the tireless efforts of doctors, she can overcome this crisis, then we may see some positive outcome,โ€ he said.

The 80-year-old former prime minister has long been suffering from multiple health complications, including arthritis, diabetes, kidney, liver, lung, heart and eye problems. She had been receiving treatment for these conditions for years.

While staying at her residence, she recently developed breathing difficulties, cough, fever and physical weakness. As her condition gradually worsened, she was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23.

Following medical examinations, rapid deterioration of her lungs, heart and kidneys was detected, prompting doctors to move her to the CCU on November 27.

A medical board comprising 30 local and foreign specialist doctors has been formed to oversee her treatment. The board holds daily meetings and makes adjustments to her treatment plan as needed.

Policies pursued during Khaleda Ziaโ€™s tenure in government helped place the countryโ€™s economy on a stronger footing by promoting infrastructure development, the rule of law, investment security and long-term certainty, Mahbubur Rahman, president of the International Chamber of Commerce Bangladesh (ICCB), said on Friday.

He made these remarks at a civic condolence meeting organised in memory of BNPโ€™s former chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia in the afternoon.

The event was held at the South Plaza of the national parliament building on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.

Leading figures from politics, diplomacy, journalism, development organisations, academia, research, editorial circles and the business community, along with representatives from various professions, attended the gathering. The programme concluded at around 5:30 pm.

Addressing the event, Mahbubur Rahman said, โ€œAt the same time, some of her initiatives in the field of social development were extremely significant.โ€

He referred in particular to Khaleda Ziaโ€™s programmes aimed at expanding education and enhancing human skills.

โ€œFood for Education, the expansion of primary schooling, and support for girlsโ€™ education brought a new ray of hope to many poor families. As a result, far more girls were able to attend school, and womenโ€™s education advanced considerably. The level of womenโ€™s participation that the country has reached today owes a great deal to these initiatives of that period,โ€ he stated.

The ICCB president noted that the assessment of a statesperson is not confined solely to what they did while in office.

โ€œHistory also remembers how a leader spent their time outside power and how they confronted crises,โ€ he said, adding that Khaleda Ziaโ€™s relationship with the country and with politics had always remained significant.

Quoting Khaleda Ziaโ€™s statement, โ€œI have no home other than Bangladesh,โ€ the business leader said, โ€œThis reminds all of us that our future is inextricably linked with this country. The more stability the country achieves and the greater the publicโ€™s confidence becomes, the more opportunities will open up for all of us. The business community, too, wants a Bangladesh where rules and regulations are robust, trust is built, the younger generation has greater opportunities to move forward, and the tendency to siphon off national wealth abroad is substantially reduced.โ€

Mahbubur Rahman further said, โ€œKhaleda Zia was not merely a political leader. When she stepped into politics beyond the confines of her family, she did not forget the family, nor did she forget society or the system as a whole. She created a new horizon there.โ€

The programme began after 2:30 pm on Friday with the recitation of the Holy Quran. This was followed by condolence messages in memory of Khaleda Zia, read out by Salehuddin, executive editor of the Daily Ittefaq. Subsequently, speeches were delivered by writer Faham Abdus Salam; Basudeb Dhar, president of the Puja Udjapan Parishad; Khaleda Ziaโ€™s physician FM Siddiqui; Debashish Roy, special assistant to the chief adviser of the former caretaker government; Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman; ICCB President Mahbubur Rahman; CPD Distinguished Fellow Debapriya Bhattacharya; senior editor Shafiq Rehman; writer and researcher Mohiuddin Ahmed; Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam; DPI President Abdus Sattar Dulal; former diplomat Anwar Hashim; University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman SM A Faiez; writer and researcher Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir; Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Asif Nazrul; educationist Professor Mahbub Ullah; and former Chief Justice Syed JR Mudassir Husain.

Among those who attended the condolence meeting were BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, their daughter Zaima Rahman, and family members including Shamila Rahman, wife of Khaleda Ziaโ€™s younger son Arafat Rahman Koko. Also present were Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Professor Ali Riaz, Monir Haider, and others.

Senior BNP leaders attending the meeting included BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir; Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Mirza Abbas, Selima Rahman, Salahuddin Ahmed, AZM Zahid Hossain; Security Adviser Major General (retd) Fazle Elahi Akbar; Chairmanโ€™s Adviser Mahdi Amin; and other senior leaders.
