SHC restrains ECP from issuing election results amidst complaints

Feb 12, 2024

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to refrain from issuing any notifications concerning the election results from any constituency until the complaints challenging the results are resolved.

The order came during a hearing presided over by Chief Justice Sindh High Court, Justice Aqeel Ahmad Abbasi, in response to over 25 applications challenging the 2024 election results.

According to Express News, Barrister Farogh Naseem, representing MQM-P, argued that the court needed to determine the suitability of these matters for litigation. The hearing addressed concerns raised by petitioners, including Barrister Salahuddin, who claimed that successful candidates, as per Form-45 results, were later ranked second or third.

Chief Justice Abbasi acknowledged the numerous applications and urged adherence to legal processes, suggesting that re-polling might be a viable option if complaints about Form-47 arose. He commended the peaceful conduct of the election and emphasised the importance of following the law without disrupting the electoral process.

A delegation of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), comprising Raoof Hassan and Umair Niazi, called on President Dr. Arif Alvi, at Aiwan-e-Sadr and informed him about the suspected manipulation of the general elections.

The development was confirmed by the President of Pakistanโ€™s official X handle.

The statement added that the delegation told the President about the purported anomalies in the election procedure.

The statement, citing the delegation, said that โ€œonly 45 forms issued in different constituencies show the facts of the election results.โ€

โ€œIn the general elections, the public showed faith in the partyโ€™s candidates despite the irregularities,โ€ the delegation informed the president.

His political party is effectively banned, his speeches are barred from television, and he faces at least 14 years in prison. But as the Pakistan election results show, Imran Khan cannot be suppressed.

Independent candidates affiliated with the former prime ministerโ€™s Pakistan Tehereek-e-Insaf (PTI) party secured the most parliamentary seats in last weekโ€™s nationwide election, the election commission announced Sunday.

It is a stunning victory for an incarcerated Khan who, two years ago faced a dramatic ouster as prime minister and most recently faced a military-led crackdown analysts say was designed to thwart the cricket iconโ€™s return to power.

โ€œYou kept my trust, and your massive turnout has stunned everyone,โ€ an AI-generated video of Khan shared by the PTI that mimicked his voice, said to his millions of followers shortly after his victory. โ€œNow show the strength of protecting your vote.โ€ Khanโ€™s team has previously used AI to deliver his speeches from behind bars.

โ€˜Not that big a dealโ€™: PM Kakar brushes off criticism from US lawmakers on elections

Caretaker Anwaarul Haq Kakar has brushed off criticism from US lawmakers regarding the general elections and said that it is โ€œnot that big a dealโ€.

He said Pakistan had a huge diaspora in the United States, some of whom had โ€œquite an active role in domestic politics and have their own inclinations towards domestic politics here so at times it is quite easy for you to settle there, participate in local fundraising and youโ€™ll be able to influence one, two or a few members of US Congressโ€.

Kakar said US Congress members did not โ€œrepresent the gospel truthโ€ and were not the โ€œpedestal of do [and] does [not]โ€.

He said there were other important issues for them to comment on.

Trust me. They will change their tune soon. When big daddy speaks like that even the generals pay attention.

Notice how active the Americans have become. This is the right moment to attack the generals. They are at their weakest. You reap what you sow. The generals always enjoyed full support from all peoples. Instead they deviated and chose to play good cop bad cop. Now the Americans have turned against the generals and playing good cop bad cop.

The Americans aren't going to accept these election results because everyone knows what happened. The generals are in a tough spot.
