Iran beat him with pure grit and doggedness and almost took Basra and many other Iraqi cities but the US started providing Saddam with chemical weapons, to blunt Iranian advances. They all got together the US, Soviets and the Chinese to stop Iran from demolishing Iraq. A decade and a half later the US handed over Iraq to Iran on a platter.You forgot to mention that Saddam was America's darling.
