Iran beat him with pure grit and doggedness and almost took Basra and many other Iraqi cities but the US started providing Saddam with chemical weapons, to blunt Iranian advances. They all got together the US, Soviets and the Chinese to stop Iran from demolishing Iraq. A decade and a half later the US handed over Iraq to Iran on a platter.

In the 1980’s Iran had no weapons industry and bought weapons from the black market and learnt a very painful lesson. A doctrinal change in military culture and tactics was implemented learning from mistakes and a whole new asymmetrical warfare concept was created to fight opponents not on their terms, thereby negating their advantage in sophistication/ superiority.

The results of this policy are in front of us today.

Considering they were totally under sanctions at the time. And Saddam was essentially being armed by the US. Think Russia and Ukraine. Only Iran being no Russia. The rest of the players being essentially the same.
