Sheikh Kabir Hossain, uncle of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has left the country for Singapore through the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The flight carrying him departed from the Dhaka airport on Sunday morning, Prothom Alo reported quoting intelligence sources.

A little known figure before Awami League assumed office in 2009, Sheikh Kabir rose to fame after Sheikh Hasina became the prime minister.

He was very influential in different sectors, including the financial sector, and held various top positions in 23 institutions, organisations and agencies during the Sheikh Hasina regime.

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Sunday said the interim government has not received any letter from Tulip Siddiq, reportedly seeking a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during his official visit to the United Kingdom.

"The government has not yet received any such letter," Alam told UNB when enquired about Tulip Siddiq's reported letter seeking audience with Professor Muhammad Yunus.

"We cannot comment on something we have not seen," the Press Secretary added.

Prof Yunus is scheduled to leave Dhaka for London on Monday evening as part of his four-day official visit to the United Kingdom.

"I haven’t done anything wrong and I have nothing to hide. If you’re serious about finding out the truth, let’s talk," Tulip Siddiq wrote from her verified X handle, tagging the Chief Adviser and sharing a report run by The Guardian.

Former City Minister of the UK Tulip Siddiq has written to Prof Yunus as she wants meet him in London to clear up a “misunderstanding” after corruption allegations made by interim administration led her to resign from the UK government, according to a report run by The Guardian.

Siddiq, whose aunt deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was put on trial in absentia last week over crimes against humanity during her 15 years tenure, has been accused of benefitting from the former regime by the authorities in Bangladesh.

The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday started an inquiry into allegations of embezzling and laundering Tk 2,000 crore against immediate past Bangladesh high commissioner to the United Kingdom Saida Muna Tasneem and her husband Generation Next Fashions Ltd chairman Tauhidul Islam Chaudhury.

The commission formed a team led by its deputy director Jahangir Alam to carry out the inquiry against the couple, said its chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen at a press briefing.

According to the allegations, Saida Muna Tasneem and her husband Tauhidul Islam borrowed Tk 2000 crore from 12 financial institutions in the names of fake entities, including Generation Next Fashions Ltd, and laundered the money abroad.

Institutions from which they borrowed the money include United Commercial Bank, Bank Asia, Eastern Bank, City Bank, Brac Bank, National Bank, Trust Bank and South East Bank.

After the Awami League government’s fall the interim government recalled Saida Muna to Dhaka in September 2024 as part of its move to restructure the foreign office.

Muna, belonging to the 11th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service foreign affairs cadre, went on post-retirement leave in December last year.

She had been the Bangladesh high commissioner to the UK since November 2018. Before her London assignment, she served as the Bangladesh ambassador to Thailand.

Replying another question, Abdul Momen said that documents suggested Tulip Siddiq, who is a UK Labour Party lawmaker and former city minister, is a Bangladeshi.

Besides running three ongoing cases against Tulip, who is a niece of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the ACC is conducting an inquiry also against her, said its chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen.

He questioned why Tulip resigned as UK city minister if she was innocent. ‘If she claims innocence, why did her lawyer contact the ACC? Why did she step down from her ministerial role?’

He said that the ACC considered her a Bangladesh national and would take action accordingly.

Earlier on Sunday, it once again summoned Tulip Siddiq over allegations of unlawfully acquiring a flat from Eastern Housing at Gulshan in Dhaka city.

The fresh notice has been sent to five different addresses in Dhaka, asking her to appear before the commission on June 22 in connection with the case.

Earlier in May also the ACC issued her a notice to appear before it, which she disregarded so far.

A Dhaka court has ordered the freezing of nine bank accounts of former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud and the seizure of a car on charges of illegally acquiring wealth and money laundering.

An order has been simultaneously issued to seize 12 bank accounts of his wife Nuran Fatema, reports bdnews24.com.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib gave the order on Monday after hearing two separate applications from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

ACC spokesperson Tanzir Ahmed said Hasan Mahmud has Tk 15.94 million in nine bank accounts. His wife has Tk 16.12 million in 12 bank accounts.

ACC Assistant Director Al-Amin filed the application for the seizure of their bank accounts and cars.

The court also imposed a travel ban on the Awami League Joint General Secretary and his wife that day.

Although there are rumours that he has been staying abroad since the change of government following the mass movement, Hasan has not been seen publicly in the country since the power shift.

He was reportedly seen offering Eid prayers at a mosque in London.

On Jan 16, the court ordered the freezing of 77 bank accounts of Hasan and his family.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned Bashundhara Group chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, the former prime minister's defence advisor Major General (retd.) Tarique Ahmed Siddique and his wife Shaheen Siddique. ACC’s deputy director (public relations), Akhtarul Islam, confirmed this to Prothom Alo today, Monday.

According to sources, they have been asked to appear at the ACC head office in Segunbagicha on 2 July to provide statements regarding certain allegations.

The Anti-Corruption Commission had also summoned Bashundhara Group chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and members of his family in May as part of an investigation into the allegations of land grabbing, embezzlement and money laundering. In the notices issued by ACC, they were asked to appear at the ACC headquarters in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, on 25 and 26 May for questioning.

The notice stated that their statements would be taken in order to properly investigate allegations against Ahmed Akbar Sobhan (Shah Alam), his family members, and individuals linked to his interests such as tax evasion, land grabbing, misappropriation of loan funds, fund transfers, and money laundering.

According to the notice, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, his wife Afroza Begum, their elder son and Co-Chairman Sadat Sobhan, and Sadat’s wife Sonia Ferdousi Sobhan were summoned for questioning on 25 May. On 26 May, his son and Bashundhara Group managing director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, his wife and group director Sabrina Sobhan, vice chairman Safiat Sobhan (Sanvir), vice chairman Safwan Sobhan and his wife, and group director Yasha Sobhan were summoned.
