Chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has said former prime minister Sheikh Hasina should be extradited and brought to justice if she committed crimes.

"Why shouldn't be? If she committed crimes, she should be extradited and brought to justiceโ€ฆ She should be facing justice too," he said while responding to a question at "The New York Times Climate Forward Event."

"Why shouldn't be? If she committed crimes, she should be extradited and brought to justiceโ€ฆ She should be facing justice too," he said while responding to a question at "The New York Times Climate Forward Event."

Referring to Hasina, law affairs adviser Asif Nazrul recently said Bangladesh will definitely seek extradition of any convicted person under the extradition treaty with India once trials begin.

โ€œWe have an extradition treaty with India. As per the extradition treaty, if any convicted person stays in India, we can seek his or her extradition. We will soon let you know through the Law Ministry,โ€ he told reporters while responding to a question at a media briefing in Dhaka.

Sheikh Hasina, who left the country on 5 August, is facing a number of cases.

The government has taken some steps and there are some visible progress including formation of investigation and prosecution teams.

Asked whether he will run in the election, the Nobel Peace Laureate Dr Yunus said, "No way, that's not me."

He said that he had no plans to run for office. โ€œDo I look like someone who would run?โ€

Responding to a question on โ€œstreet justice,โ€ Dr Yunus said people abroad are getting โ€œexaggerated newsโ€ and invited journalists to come and report whatever they see with their own eyes.

Regarding the election, Dr Yunus said it should not be too far as reform initiatives have been undertaken.

Commissions formed towards achieving reforms are: Electoral System Reform Commission headed by Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, Police Administration Reform Commission headed by Sarfaraz Hossain, Judiciary Reform Commission headed by Justice Shah Abu Naeem Mominur Rahman, Anti-Corruption Reform Commission headed by TIBโ€™s Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Public Administration Reform Commission headed by Abdul Mueed Chowdhury and Constitution Reform Commission headed by Distinguished Dr at Illinois State University Dr Ali Riaz.

These commissions will start working from October 1 and they will submit their reports by 31 December.

โ€˜You are the cause, we are the result.โ€™

Dr Yunus also said, the Paris Agreement, the global accord for limiting the effects of climate change, wonโ€™t work as long as the world sticks with the current economic system.

That system, he said, is centered on maximizing profits, creating wealth for a tiny group of people and generating massive waste.

โ€œThe economic system we have built is key to the destruction of this planet,โ€ said Yunus, adding that humans had created a โ€œself-destructive civilization.โ€

Dr Yunus also said, the Paris Agreement, the global accord for limiting the effects of climate change, wonโ€™t work as long as the world sticks with the current economic system.

Speaking at the New York Times Climate Forward summit, Yunus, a pioneer of microfinance, said that no matter what changes were made to the agreement, it would not make a difference until the worldโ€™s underlying systems were redesigned.

Developing countries like Bangladesh should not have to bear the burden of the climate damage done by their wealthier counterparts, he said.

โ€œWhy should we carry the burden of all the destruction that you put on us?โ€ Yunus said. โ€œYou are the cause, we are the result.โ€

He added that individuals should also bear the responsibility of producing less waste and shrinking their fossil fuel footprint.

Dr Yunus spoke about the challenges of leading a country experiencing some of the worst effects of climate change.

Asked what rich countries owe to countries like his, Yunus said the global framework for climate action needed radical change, with a focus on net-zero emissions and the elimination of extreme wealth inequality.

The New York Times on Wednesday brought together innovators, activists, scientists and policymakers for an all-day event of live journalism examining the actions needed to confront climate change.

The event, Climate Forward, included frank discussions of the political and policy challenges surrounding climate change.

It featured some of the worldโ€™s leading newsmakers โ€” including Jane Goodall, Muhammad Yunus and R.J. Scaringe โ€” to share ideas, work through problems and answer tough questions about the threats presented by a rapidly warming planet.

Former EXIM Bank chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder arrested

1727827861712.webp

Former chairman of EXIM Bank Nazrul Islam Mazumder was arrested from Dhaka's Gulshan area last night.

A team of detectives arrested Mazumder, also the founder of Nassa Group, said Rezaul Karim Mallick, additional commissioner of detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

"He was accused in several cases. We will decide in which cases he will be shown arrested," he told The Daily Star.

In late August, following the ouster of Awami League government, Bangladesh Bank reconstituted the board of directors of EXIM Bank, bringing an end to the era of the financial institution's influential chairman Mazumder.

A close ally of the Awami League government, Mazumder had been serving the private bank owners' forum -- Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) -- since 2009.

Mazumder not only used his influence at Exim Bank, but also at the overall banking industry, including the central bank, according to industry insiders.

Ex-whip Shamsul among 10 MPs under ACC scanner

1727914726869.webp

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to launch investigations into allegations of abuse of power and amassing illegal wealth against ten former lawmakers, including ex-whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury.

The ACC, led by its Chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, initiated these inquiries based on preliminary evidence uncovered by its intelligence unit, ACC deputy director for public relations Aktarul Islam said today.

Among those under scrutiny are Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury Nasim (Feni-1), Ekramul Karim Chowdhury (Noakhali-4), Omor Faruk Chowdhury (Rajshahi-1), Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury (Chattogram-12), MA Zaher (Cumilla-6), Iftiquar Uddin Talukder (Netrokona-3), Fahmi Gulandaz Babel (Mymensingh-10), Hosne Ara (reserved women's seat), and Aftab Uddin Sarker (Nilphamari-1).

The allegations center on the former lawmakers' misuse of power to acquire substantial wealth both domestically and abroad, as well as embezzling funds from development projects and engaging in money laundering.

Additionally, the commission has initiated an inquiry into five others, including Awami League Rangamati district president and former lawmaker Dipankar Talukdar (Rangamati), for allegedly embezzling public funds through a fraudulent project. The four others involved in this inquiry are district AL general secretary Hazi Mohammad Musa Mathabbar, vice-president Brisk Ketu Chakma, vice-president Angsrip Chowdhury, and cultural secretary Remliana Pankhwa.

Abul Kalam Azad

The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Abul Kalam Azad, former lawmaker and former principal secretary of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina, from the capital's Kalabagan yesterday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner (DB) Rezaul Karim Mallik confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.

Detectives arrested him from his place of hiding in the capital, where he had been staying since the fall of the Awami League government, the DB chief said without providing details.

Azad was elected member of parliament (MP) from Jamalpur-5 constituency in the last general election. The parliament was dissolved following the student-led mass uprising.

He also served as the principal secretary and principal SDG coordinator, as well as the prime minister's office secretary, and secretary to the Power Division and Economic Relations Division, reports BSS.

BFIU directs banks

1728269049785.webp

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) yesterday asked banks to freeze all personal accounts of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, his son and group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, and their family members.

The family members mentioned by the BFIU are Sadat Sobhan, son of Ahmed Akbar Sobhan; Sonia Ferdowshi Sobhan, wife of Sadat; Shafiat Sobhan, another son of Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and vice-chairman of the conglomerate; and Sabrian Sobhan, wife of Anvir.

The anti-money laundering agency sent a letter to the banks ordering them to freeze the personal bank accounts in their names for 30 days in the first phase.

The BFIU asked the banks to block their locker facilities as well.

The intelligence unit also sought an update on the account details of Safwan Sobhan, son of Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, and Safwan's wife Yeasha Sobhan within two working days.

The Criminal Investigation Department of police recently decided to investigate money laundering allegations against the Bashundhara Group bosses and their family members.

The members of the law enforcement agencies on Sunday arrested former environment, forest and climate change affairs minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury, former Awami League lawmaker for Rajshahi-3 constituency Asaduzzaman Asad, and home ministryโ€™s Public Security Division senior secretary Aminul Islam at three places in the capital.

On the same day, a judicial magistrate court in Dhaka allowed the police to take former Prime Ministerโ€™s Office principal secretary Abul Kalam Azad, also a former Awami League lawmaker for Jamalpur-5 constituency, in their custody for interrogation for seven days in a murder case.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Policeโ€™s deputy commissioner for media, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said that a team of the Detective Branch of DMP arrested former minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury at a location in the capitalโ€™s Gulshan Sunday evening.

DMP officials said that Saber was arrested as he was wanted in several cases lodged with different police stations in the capital.

Saber is a former AL lawmaker for Dhaka-9. His expertise in environmental policy and climate diplomacy earned him the special envoy role to the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in 2023.

He was also elected lawmaker with AL ticket in the elections held in 2008, 2014 and 2018.

DC Talebur said that the members of DMPโ€™s DB also arrested home ministryโ€™s former senior secretary Aminul Islam at Banani in the capital Sunday afternoon.

He, however, could not mention the case in which Aminul was arrested.

The Rapid Action Battalion said that they arrested former AL lawmaker Asaduzzaman Asad at the capitalโ€™s Baridhara Sunday afternoon.

He was arrested in a case lodged with Boalia police station in Rajshahi district over opening fire on students during the Students Movement Against Discrimination on July 19, said RAB media and legal wing director Lieutenant Colonel Munim Ferdous.

Asad is also a former general secretary of the Rajshahi district unit of the AL.

Court officials said that Dhaka additional chief judicial magistrate Jiadur Rahman allowed the police to take former PMO principal secretary and former AL lawmaker Abul Kalam Azad in their custody for interrogation for seven days in the case filed over the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim in the capitalโ€™s Naya Paltan area during BNPโ€™s grand rally on October 28, 2023.

The police arrested Azad at Dhanmondi in Dhaka Saturday afternoon.
