Yes - Harley Davidson had to open mfg. in India because tariff was 50% on imported bikes, now reduced to 40% before Modi went to USA. Harley's bikes made in India are smaller displacement bikes.

Protectionism is lazy way to defend your local inefficiencies. Trump saw Harley Davidson case in India as a token issue to harp on during the last election, total market for Harleys in India are around only USD 5 million or so. RE owns majority of the Indian bike market at that level (500 and 750 cc bikes).
There's even a Bajaj 440 something which comes with a Harley badge lol

They're not the cheapest bikes, even in the US.. idhar they'll never have a mass market, but there are enthusiasts who will benefit from the slashed duties.

Well Harleys are premium products that come with name recognition, cachet and panache.

In the motorbike market, Harleys are sold not as a 'product' but introduction to a certain type of 'lifestyle'. They are the last thing you'd want for a cheap mass market item. And although RE's aren't cheap either, RE's are RE's, and Harleys are Harleys.

Every year they have a grand rally at Sturgis full of fun get togethers, Harley workshops, sales events and enthusiast presentations for engine modifications etc.

RE in India has a long way to go to gather that type of product following.


Harley riders are one type of Trump core demographic, that's why he harps on the Harley tariffs in India..

If you gave these Harley buyers a 50% discount, they still won't buy an RE.

Entirely different segments, bhai.

Idhar a 650 is considered huge, udhar 2/2.5 litle huge V Twin cruisers etc.

Market hi alag hai, 650 are nice "beginner bikes" there, say people who are seriously in the hobby. They are also very fun (and comparatively compact) for your run downtown or for a rideabout on a sunday or holiday.

Take a ride someday are see for yourself, very fun bikes, the new RE 650s.. majedaar scene.
