Japan is like a country club.......culturally......
My understanding is that they have a very insular culture (very disciplined and responsible and are fanatics on cleanliness) - but like you said, they still appreciate the uniqueness of every culture. The thing that they are antsy about is environmental consciousness, cleanliness and hygiene, which they value a LOT, unlike other Asians. Recycling is like a religion apparently.
Longtime back a student friend of mine in a Japanese University started cooking Biryani in the dorm, and fed some of his Japanese friends
After that - he got really popular in the dorm and they started a club where they'd bring in the ingredients every weekend and cook as a social activity. This was a communal kitchen situation of course but all would pitch in (in teams) to clean up after the fact.
