Conspiracy on for a Christian state: PM

Prime minister and ruling Awami League president Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said that a conspiracy continued to make a Christian state comprising the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh and a part of bordering Myanmar.
She came up with the remark in her introductory speech at a meeting with the AL-led alliance at her official residence Ganabhaban.
'The plot is still there. With a part of Bangladesh like East Timor [broken off from Indonesia], then Chittagong [Chittagong Hill Tracts], Myanmar will form a Christian state. A base will be built in the Bay of Bengal,' she said.
She said that there was a conspiracy not to allow the election in Bangladesh this year.
'But the holding of the election would be allowed and I would face no difficulty in retaining power if I allowed them to build a base in the Bay of Bengal. It was a proposal from a white person,' said the prime minister.
'I gave a clear answer that I am Bangabandhu's daughter. We made the country independent. I do not want to come to power by renting part of the country or handing it over to someone,' she said.
She said that everyone should know these words that her fight was everywhere — inside and outside.
'Trade and commerce have been going on through the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean since ancient times. And there is no controversy and conflict in this place. Many have their eyes on this place... I would not let that happen,' said the prime minister.
She asked that who would be attacked if any air base was established here.
This was the first meeting of alliance chief Sheikh Hasina with the partners after the past general elections held on January 7.
Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon, general secretary Fazle Hossain Badsha, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal–Jasod president Hasanul Haq Inu, general secretary Shirin Akhter, Samyabadi Dal general secretary Dilip Barua, Jatiya Party–JP chairman Anwar Hossain Monju, Tarikat Federation president Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, Communist Kendra joint convener Asit Baran Roy and others attended the meeting.
