The Border Guard Bangladesh Rangpur region and the Indian Border Security Force North Bengal frontier held a courtesy meeting at the Banglabandha-Phulbari ICP on the Bangladesh-India border at about 12:00pm on Thursday, said a BGB release on Friday.

At the meeting, BGB strongly protested and condemned the killings at the border while a 15-year old Bangladeshi youth Jayanta Kumar Singh was shot dead by BSF at Baliadangi point on September 9, BGB’s Thakurgaon sector commander colonel Muhammad Towhidur Rahman confirmed Thursday night.

In response to the meeting, inspector general of BSF North Bengal frontier Shri Surya Kumar Sharma expressed regret for the unexpected incident by the BSF and assured the BGB delegation that the BSF would not open fire on any Bangladeshi citizens at the border areas in future, the BGB official added.

The meeting was also attended, among others, by Rangpur region commander of the BGB brigadier general Khandaker Shafiquzzaman, deputy inspector generals of the Siliguri and Kishanganj sectors and other BGB and BSF officials.

Amid growing anti-India sentiment, a road adjoining the Indian High Commission in Dhaka has been named 'Shaheed Felani Road' by a citizens group initiative in protest of 'border killings' - the killing of Bangladeshi citizens by India's Border Security Force in the frontier regions.

An organization named People's Activist Coalition (PAC) installed a nameplate denoting as much on the road, ignoring police's attempts to obstruct them, on Friday afternoon.

Some people started gathering on the road in front of the Indian High Commission around 4 pm.

Police and army personnel took position on that road and stopped the movement of people and vehicles.

Around 4:30 pm, when the leaders and workers of the PAC went to install the nameplates, the police stopped them.

They were heard chanting slogans like 'Delhi na Dhaka/ Dhaka Dhaka'.

At one stage, a nameplate was installed on the road saying "Shaheed Felani Road."

Felani, a minor Bangladeshi girl, worked as a domestic help in New Delhi. She was returning home with her father through Anantapur border in Kurigram district on January 7, 2011, when members of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot her dead. Her body was handed over to Bangladesh a day later.

Bangladesh recently strongly protested two border killings in the space of eight days by BSF.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh lodged the first formal protest to the Government of India on the killing of a 13-year-old Bangladeshi girl, Shwarna Das of Juri upazila of Moulvibazar district, who was shot and killed by Border Security Force (BSF) of India on September 1.

In the protest note sent to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, Bangladesh strongly protested and condemned such ruthless acts and expressed deep concern over the incidents.

The government of Bangladesh reminded that such incidents of border killing are undesirable and unwarranted and such actions are in violation of the provisions of the Joint Indo-Bangladesh Guidelines for Border Authorities, 1975.

The government of Bangladesh called upon the government of India to stop repetition of such heinous acts and conduct enquiries into all border killings, identify the responsible persons and bring them to justice.

Bangladesh is set to regain around 200 acres of land previously lost to India due to the erosion of the River Padma along the Daulatpur border in Kushtia.

A joint decision to resurvey the disputed land and return it to the rightful owners was reached in a meeting held between senior officials of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday.

The land in question, located in the Challishpara area of Ramkrishnapur union in Daulatpur upazila, has been under dispute due to shifts in the Padma River’s course and natural disasters, which disorganised international boundary pillars over a stretch of three kilometres. The problem was first identified in a survey conducted earlier this year.

Lieutenant Colonel M Mahbub Murshed Rahman, Commander of BGB’s 47th Battalion, confirmed the matter. 'It has been agreed to conduct a resurvey of the disputed land and return it to the rightful owners.'

During the survey on February 10, it was revealed that about 200 acres of Bangladeshi land had ended up inside Indian territory, and approximately 40 acres of Indian land in Bangladesh territory. Both countries are now preparing to officially correct the boundaries in October.

Sunday’s meeting, held at the border pillar 152/7-S of Jamalpur Border Outpost in Mahishkundi, Daulatpur, also addressed broader issues such as preventing border killings and tackling drug trafficking. The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Lt. Col Rahman, while Commandant Vikram Dev Singh of the Rowshanbagh Battalion represented BSF.

Lt Col Rahman emphasized that until the resurvey is complete, no one will be allowed to utilize the disputed land. He also conveyed Bangladesh’s strong protest against recent border killings, urging BSF to refrain from detaining innocent citizens and prevent illegal cross-border activities, particularly in the lead-up to the Durga Puja.

Col Md Arifuzzaman, sector commander of BGB, Dinajpur, led the Bangladeshi side while Iss Awul, DIG of Kishanganj Sector BSF Battalion, led the Indian side.
