US Urges Pakistan To Condemn Pahalgam Terror Attack, De-Escalate Tensions With India

US Urges Pakistan To Condemn Pahalgam Terror Attack, De-Escalate Tensions With India
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to unequivocally condemn the "unconscionable" Pahalgam terror attack and act to defuse increasing tensions with India, the US State Department said on Thursday.

In a recap of the call, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce reported that Rubio also urged Pakistan to work with investigation attempts into the attack and reopen direct diplomatic communications with India. "Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to holding terrorists accountable for their heinous acts," Bruce further added.

The diplomatic initiative comes after the April 22 terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which Pakistan-sponsored terrorists killed 26 individuals, including mostly tourists, and injured several others. The attack has triggered a sharp decline in India-Pakistan relations.

Escalating Cross-Border Tensions After The Attack

Following the Pahalgam incident, India has witnessed a rising tide of ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC). Indian security forces have accelerated counter-terror operations in the Kashmir Valley, along with a reaction to cross-LoC firing in Kupwara, Poonch, Tutmari Gali, and Rampur sectors.

India has been taking a series of retaliatory steps, such as suspending the Indus Water Treaty, stopping operations at the Attari Integrated Check Post, closing Pakistani airspace access, and lowering diplomatic representation in both nations.

India's Stern Warning Against Terrorism

After the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged that India would pursue and punish all of them. "India will pursue terrorists and their backers to the ends of the Earth. Terrorism will not go unpunished," he said.

A day later, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened to discuss the scenario. Officials apprised the CCS of cross-border connections between the attackers, pointing out that the attack was during successful Jammu and Kashmir elections and along its trajectory of economic recovery.

The US call for restraint and responsibility comes against a backdrop of increasing international unease regarding South Asian stability.

Perpetrators, planners must be brought to justice': Jaishankar raises Pahalgam attack with US

In his call with Jaishankar, Rubio expressed his sorrow for the lives lost in the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam that had killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar

External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday raised the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In a post on X after his conversation, Rubio said that the perpetrators, backers and planners of the attack must be brought to justice.

"Discussed the Pahalgam terrorist attack with US @SecRubio yesterday. Its perpetrators, backers and planners must be brought to justice," the minister said on X.

Rubio spoke to both Jaishankar and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday and urged both sides to "de-escalate tensions".

In his call with Jaishankar, Rubio expressed his sorrow for the lives lost in the “horrific” terrorist attack in Pahalgam that had killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists.

Rubio “reaffirmed the United States' commitment to cooperation with India against terrorism. He also encouraged India to work with Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and maintain peace and security in South Asia,” a statement issued by State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said.

In his conversation with Sharif, Rubio spoke of the need to condemn the terror attack on April 22 in Pahalgam and urged Pakistani officials’ cooperation in investigating "this unconscionable attack."

He also encouraged Pakistan to work with India to de-escalate tensions, re-establish direct communications, and maintain peace and security in South Asia.

Rubio and Sharif “reaffirmed their continued commitment to holding terrorists accountable for their heinous acts of violence." A press release by the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office said that Sharif briefed the US Secretary of State on Pakistan’s perspective regarding recent developments in South Asia following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated since the attack, with both countries scaling down diplomatic ties. Pakistan has also violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control over the last few days, with India responding appropriately.

Revenge has come after 2 weeks. Afterall justice is served. However, this is not enough. Keep hitting each and every camps of these terrorists. I am sad that the terrorist on the other side of border were hit and not the terrorists of Kashmir were hit. Kashmir Mosques of Indian side should also have been hit. Why spare the Desi Terrorists?

India destroys Pakistan’s air defence system, radars in Lahore and other cities

India targeted Pakistan’s air defence systems, including one in Lahore, after foiling multiple drone and missile attacks on military bases across Northern and Western India. Meanwhile, Pakistan intensified unprovoked shelling along the LoC in several sectors of Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials confirmed that Pakistan had tried to engage Indian military installations using drones and missiles in cities including Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda, and Chandigarh.

New Delhi: Indian Air Force carried out targeted strikes on multiple air defence radars and systems in Pakistan on Thursday morning in response to a series of failed drone and missile attacks by Pakistan on military bases across Northern and Western India during the night of May 7–8.
According to Defense Ministry, the strikes were precise and limited to systems involved in the attempted attacks, including the destruction of an air defense unit in Lahore, which was reportedly sourced from China.

Unprovoked firing by Pakistan Army

Pakistan had attempted to hit key Indian military installations in cities such as Avantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj. However, India’s air defense systems successfully intercepted all incoming threats, and no damage was reported.
In response, India launched drone strikes on several Pakistani cities, aiming only at military assets directly linked to the earlier attacks. The Defence Ministry described the operation as measured and defensive, affirming that India had acted within its rights to protect its territory and citizens.
Meanwhile, Gurdaspur district administration ordered complete blackout in the district from 9 pm on May 8 to 5 am on May 9.

India on alert

Meanwhile, on the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistan intensified unprovoked shelling in the Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors. This heavy mortar and artillery fire resulted in the deaths of 16 civilians, including three women and five children. India responded to the firing, and officials said this retaliation forced the Pakistani side to halt its aggression.
Indian government warned that any further provocation by Pakistan will be met with a strong and appropriate response. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation but reiterated that India remains committed to peace—provided Pakistan refrains from hostilities.

Pakistani Cities Under Attack? Blast Reported From Karachi, Lahore And Other Cities
A series of explosions reportedly took place in the Pakistani cities of Lahore and Karachi on Thursday.

According to reports, three blasts occurred in Lahore, a city in Pakistan's Punjab province, this morning, sparking panic among locals, who fled their homes fearing for their lives.

In Karachi, residents reportedly heard the sound of an explosion near Sharafi Goth in Malir.

Frightened by the blasts, people in Lahore began rushing out of their homes in search of safety.

Chaos erupted in Lahore as residents fled following three consecutive explosions on Walton Road. Clouds of smoke filled the city’s skyline as panic spread through the streets.

Local sources reported two loud blasts near Askari 5, with smoke visible from the Naval College area, according to Samaa TV. Another explosion was also reported earlier today in the Burki district, as per MM News.

Commercial flights have been suspended at both Lahore and Sialkot airports until noon on Thursday amid escalating border tensions.

These incidents follow Indian military strikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Indian forces struck four terrorist targets, including the Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters in Bahawalpur (Punjab province), while destroying five additional targets in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, as per reports.

Additionally, unverified reports suggest that Indian drones struck targets in Lahore, Attock, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Mianwali, Chor, and Karachi.
