Iran-United States talks back on; Trump warns Iranian supreme leader

Iran and the United States said Wednesday they were going ahead with nuclear talks in Oman later this week, even as president Donald Trump piled pressure on Tehran’s supreme leader by saying he should be ‘very worried.’

Doubts had swirled about the fate of the negotiations after a report earlier Wednesday that the talks between the bitter foes were falling apart due to disagreements about the format and the venue.

The uncertainty had increased fears of renewed US military action against Tehran, amid soaring tensions since Iran violently put down some of the most serious protests against its rule since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

But Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said nuclear talks were now ‘scheduled’ for Friday in Muscat. ‘I’m grateful to our Omani brothers for making all necessary arrangements,’ he said on X.

A White House official also confirmed to AFP that the meeting would happen in Oman on Friday.

Diplomats had earlier said the meeting would happen in Turkey. But the Axios news outlet said the US was on the verge of pulling out, as Iran disputed both the location and whether its ballistic missile programme should be included.

But Trump, who has sharply built up the US military presence in the region and refused to rule out new military action, continued to up the pressure on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

‘I would say he should be very worried,’ Trump said Wednesday in an interview with US broadcaster NBC News.

Trump also said that Iran had eyed a new nuclear facility after US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites during Israel’s June war against the Islamic republic.

‘They were thinking about starting a new site in a different part of the country,’ Trump told NBC. ‘We found out about it, I said, you do that, we’re going to do very bad things to you.’

Trump has sent a US aircraft carrier group — which he calls an ‘armada’ — to the region and one of its planes shot down an Iranian drone on Tuesday. Iran has threatened retaliation against US targets in the region if attacked.

United States secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier Wednesday that the United States was ‘ready’ to meet Iran — but insisted that discussions must cover Tehran’s missile and nuclear programs to be ‘meaningful.’

‘They will have to include certain things, and that includes the range of their ballistic missiles, that includes their sponsorship of terrorist organisations across the region, that includes their nuclear program and that includes the treatment of their own people,’ he said.

Rubio said that Trump’s roving envoy Steve Witkoff had been ready to meet with Iran in Turkey but then received ‘conflicting reports’ on whether Tehran had agreed.

Iran in previous talks on its disputed nuclear program has ruled out discussions on its missiles, casting the weapons that can hit Israel as a tool of self-defense to which every country has a right.

But Iran has been under growing pressure from the protests and after an Israeli bombing campaign last year. Iran has also lost key regional allies with Israel’s severe degrading of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the fall of veteran Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.

Iran says to hold more talks with US despite Trump military threats

Iran on Friday said it expected to hold more negotiations with the United States after a day of indirect talks in Oman seen as a critical chance for diplomacy after President Donald Trump threatened new military action against Tehran.

With an American naval group led by an aircraft carrier in Middle Eastern waters, US and Iranian delegations held talks in Muscat mediated by the Gulf sultanate without publicly meeting face-to-face.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who led Iran's delegation in Muscat, said talks solely focused on the nuclear issue, after the US had indicated Tehran's backing for militant groups and its ballistic missile programme also needed to be on the agenda.

The talks were the first between the two foes since the United States joined Israel's war with Iran in June with strikes on nuclear sites.

They also come just under a month after Iranian authorities launched a crackdown on protests that left thousands dead according to rights groups.

US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, accompanied by Trump's influential son-in-law Jared Kushner, led Washington's delegation at the talks.

"In a very positive atmosphere, our arguments were exchanged and the views of the other side were shared with us," Araghchi told Iranian state TV, adding that the two sides had "agreed to continue negotiations, but we will decide on the modalities and timing at a later date".

"The way forward will depend on our consultations with capitals," he added after the talks concluded.

"Our discussions are focused exclusively on the nuclear issue and we are not addressing any other subject with the Americans," Araghchi told the official IRNA news agency.

In a symbol of the potential for US military action, Admiral Brad Cooper, the commander of US Central Command, whose area of responsibility includes the Middle East, was also present at the talks, according to images published by the Oman news agency.

A source with knowledge of the talks told AFP that the meetings took place at the residence of Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi.

'Don't want us to hit them'

Multiple sessions of talks in the morning and afternoon saw both sides shuttling to and from the residence of Albusaidi who appeared to be acting as mediator and passing on messages.

Writing on X, Albusaidi described the talks as "very serious".

"It was useful to clarify both Iranian and American thinking and identify areas for possible progress. We aim to reconvene in due course, with the results to be considered carefully in Tehran and Washington."

The White House has made clear it wants the talks to rein in Tehran's ability to make a nuclear bomb, an ambition the Islamic republic has always denied.

The US delegation intended to explore "zero nuclear capacity" for Iran, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, warning that Trump had "many options at his disposal aside from diplomacy".

"They're negotiating," Trump said of Iran on Thursday.

"They don't want us to hit them, we have a big fleet going there," he added, referring to the aircraft carrier group he has repeatedly called an "armada".

There was no immediate comment from the American delegation in Muscat.

'Compromise or war'

The meeting comes just under a month after the peak of a wave of nationwide protests in Iran against the clerical leadership, which rights groups say were repressed with an unprecedented crackdown that has left thousands dead.

Trump initially threatened military action against Tehran over its crackdown on protesters and even told demonstrators "help is on its way".

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said that according to its latest toll 6,495 protesters were confirmed to have been killed as well as 214 members of the security forces and 61 bystanders.

But it and other rights groups warn that the final toll risks being far higher, with the magnitude of the crackdown masked by the blanket internet shutdown imposed by the authorities for a fortnight.

Almost 51,000 people are also confirmed to have been arrested, according to HRANA.

But Trump's rhetoric in recent days has focused on reining in the Iranian nuclear programme and the US has manoeuvered a naval group led by aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln into the region.

Iran has repeatedly vowed it will hit back at US bases if attacked.

"We are ready to defend and it is the US president who must choose between compromise or war," state television on Thursday quoted army spokesman General Mohammad Akraminia as saying, warning that Iran has "easy" access to US regional bases.

The US initially wanted to hold the talks in Turkey, include regional countries and explicitly expand the agenda beyond nuclear but then had to change course due to Iranian demands, a regional source close to the talks told AFP.

Iranian police said 139 foreign nationals have so far been arrested in the central province of Yazd for their participation in recent protests, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday, without specifying their nationalities.

Yazd, a predominantly desert province with a relatively small population above 1 million, was one of many provinces affected by nationwide protests in January.

The protests, which started in December over economic hardships and quickly turned political, were repressed in the most violent crackdown since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The official death toll stands at 3,117, although rights groups say many more people have been killed.

US-based rights group HRANA has said that nearly 50,000 people have so far been arrested.

Authorities blame Israel and the United States for fomenting the violence.

"These (foreign) individuals played an active role in organising, inciting, and directing riotous actions, and in some cases were in contact with networks abroad," Yazd's police commander Ahmad Negahban was quoted as saying by Tasnim.

Judicial authorities have warned of severe consequences for unrest-linked detainees who committed violent acts.

"Those who played a role in this American sedition and supported it will not be spared," Iran's judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir said on Tuesday.

Iranian media reported on Monday the arrest of four foreigners in Tehran over last month's unrest, a shift from earlier reports announcing daily arrests of suspected protest ringleaders without pointing to foreign nationals.

Following a 12-day war in June in which Israel relied on agents within Iran for its early offensive, Tehran accelerated a campaign to deport mainly Afghan nationals, who represent the largest foreign community in the country.
Iran has already deported about 3 million afghanis in the last 8 months since the 12 day war. Another 6 odd million hiding in the country are difficult to catch and deport. There are another 10 odd million illegals besides the afghanis and they should also be deported.

As far as I know, Pakistan is also sheltering millions of Afghanis in their country. Both Pakistan and Iran are generous countries.
