If the United States were to not give Ukraine the military support it needs, it would be a serious setback for Ukraine, the EU and NATO, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Thursday.

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy are expected to discuss the abrupt halt in some key US weapons deliveries to Kyiv in a call on Friday, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment.

"If the US decides not to provide Ukraine with what is needed, it would be a serious setback for Ukraine and for Europe and for NATO," Frederiksen told a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in connection with Denmark's takeover of the EU Presidency.

"The war in Ukraine has never only been about Ukraine. This is a war about the future of Europe," she added.​

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin told US counterpart Donald Trump that Moscow will not ‘give up’ on its aims in Ukraine, while pledging it will also keep up a negotiating process on the conflict, the Kremlin said Thursday after a call between the leaders.

‘Our president said that Russia will achieve the aims it set, that is to say the root causes that led to the current state of affairs,’ Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters. ‘Russia will not give up on these aims.’

‘He also spoke of the readiness of the Russian side to continue the negotiation process,’ Ushakov added, saying the call lasted almost an hour.​

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he discussed air defences in a conversation with US President Donald Trump on Friday, and agreed to work on increasing Kyiv's capability to "defend the sky" as Russian attacks escalate.

He added in his account on Telegram that he discussed joint defence production, as well as joint purchases and investments with the US leader.

Ukraine has been asking Washington to sell it more Patriot missiles and systems that it sees as key to defending its cities from intensifying Russian air strikes.

A decision by Washington to halt some shipments of weapons to Ukraine prompted warnings by Kyiv that the move would weaken its ability to defend against Russia's airstrikes and battlefield advances. Germany said it is in talks on buying Patriot air defence systems to bridge the gap.

The conversation came a day after Trump said he had a disappointing call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia pummelled Kyiv with the largest drone attack of the war across the capital, hours after Trump's conversation with Putin on Thursday.

Zelenskiy called the attack "deliberately massive and cynical."

Trump spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, according to Spiegel magazine, citing government sources. The two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, including strengthening its air defences, as well as trade issues, Spiegel reported on Friday.​

The Kremlin said on Friday that it sees no immediate diplomatic way out of the war in Ukraine, hours after launching its largest ever drone and missile barrage of the invasion.

The hours-long bombardments across Ukraine came just after a telephone call between the US and Russian presidents ended without any breakthrough.

AFP journalists in Kyiv heard drones buzzing over the capital and explosions ringing out throughout the night as Ukrainian air defence systems fended off the attack.

‘We are interested in achieving our goals in the course of the special military operation and it is preferable to do it by political and diplomatic means,’ Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, referring to its invasion, launched in February 2022.

‘But as long as that is not possible, we are continuing the special operation,’ he said in a briefing, including with AFP.

US president Donald Trump had said he made no progress in discussions one day earlier with president Vladimir Putin on ending the war, while the Kremlin vowed to pursue its war aims.

A senior Ukrainian official said that Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky were planning to speak later on Friday.

Tymur, a Kyiv resident who said he had experienced previous Russian attacks, said that the assault in the early hours of Friday was different.

‘Nothing like this attack had ever happened before. There have never been so many explosions,’ he said.

Zelensky said air alerts had begun echoing out across the country as the Trump-Putin call was getting underway.

‘Yet again, Russia is showing it has no intention of ending the war and terror,’ Zelensky said on social media.

‘All of this is clear evidence that without truly large-scale pressure, Russia will not change its dumb, destructive behaviour.’

He urged the United States in particular to increase pressure on Moscow, which on Friday announced fresh territorial gains on the front line with the capture of a village in the Donetsk region.

Poland said its embassy building in Kyiv had been damaged in the attack but that staff were unharmed.

Germany’s foreign ministry meanwhile said that the timing of the attack — just after the leaders’ call — showed that Moscow ’continues to rely on brute force’.

‘Ukraine needs more to defend itself, not less,’ the ministry said on social media.

A government spokesman said Germany was exploring the possibility of purchasing more Patriot air defence systems from the United States for Ukraine.

Zelensky said 23 people were wounded in the barrage, which the air force said comprised 539 drones and 11 missiles.

A representative of Ukraine’s air force told Ukrainian media that the attack was the largest of the Russian invasion, launched in February 2022.

Overnight Russia attacks have escalated over recent weeks.

An AFP tally found Moscow launched a record number of drones and missiles at Ukraine in June, when direct peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow appeared to stall.

In Kyiv, AFP journalists saw dozens of residents of the capital taking shelter in a metro station.

Yuliia Golovnina, who said she shelters at the metro regularly, described to AFP the worry that comes with hearing an explosion during an attack.

‘Will there be another one? Will something collapse on you?’ the 47-year-old said.

‘So in those seconds, you just hold your breath and wait to see what happens next,’ she added.

In Kyiv, concerns mount over whether the US will continue delivering military aid, which is key to Ukraine’s ability to fend off the drone and missile barrages.

The US announced this week it was reducing some of its aid deliveries.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said this was a clear signal that the 27-nation European Union needed to ‘step up’.

Ukraine has also ramped up its retaliatory strikes in Russia, where a woman was killed when a Ukrainian drone crashed into an apartment building, the acting regional governor in Rostov said.

Talks, spearheaded by the United States to secure a ceasefire, have stalled but Ukraine and Russia announced a fresh swap of prisoners of war with Ukraine.

The two sides said it was part of agreements reached during talks in Istanbul last month.​

Russian air defences shot down four Ukrainian drones headed for Moscow on Saturday, the city’s mayor said, while one of the capital’s main airports temporarily halted outgoing flights.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said emergency services were working at the sites of the downed drones, but gave no information on potential damage.

The Defence Ministry said 94 drones had been destroyed over Russia overnight on Saturday and 45 more between 0800 MSK (0400 GMT) and 1350 MSK.

Outgoing flights at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport were temporarily paused on Saturday before they were later lifted, Russia’s Rosaviatsia aviation authority said, citing “restrictions” over the capital’s airspace as well as strong winds.

Rosaviatsia said incoming and outgoing flights at airports in several other Russian cities were also temporarily halted, including at St Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport, citing safety concerns.​

US President Donald Trump said Ukraine would need Patriot missiles for its defenses, after speaking with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday, and voiced frustration over Russian President Vladimir Putin's failure to end the fighting.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he had a good call with Zelenskiy, repeating that he was "very unhappy" about his call with Putin a day earlier, given what he called the Russian leader's refusal to work on a ceasefire.

Asked whether the United States would agree to supply more Patriot missiles to Ukraine, as requested by Zelenskiy, Trump said: "They're going to need them for defense... They're going to need something because they're being hit pretty hard."

Trump touted the efficacy of the Patriot missiles, calling the weapon "pretty amazing."

Asked about the prospects for a ceasefire, Trump said, "It’s a very tough situation... I was very unhappy with my call with President Putin. He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people - it’s no good."

Zelenskiy said he had agreed to work on increasing Kyiv's capability to "defend the sky" as Russian attacks escalate, adding in a message on Telegram that he discussed joint defense production, as well as joint purchases and investments with the US leader.

A source briefed on the Trump-Zelenskiy call told Reuters they were optimistic that supplies of Patriot missiles could resume after what they called a "very good" conversation between the presidents.

RUSSIA PUMMELS KYIV

Trump said he also spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about Ukraine's request for Patriot missiles but that no decision had been made to supply the advanced missiles.

US news outlet Axios reported, citing unnamed sources, that the call lasted around 40 minutes and that Trump told Zelenskiy he would check what US weapons due to be sent to Ukraine, if any, had been put on hold.

Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, said he and Trump had agreed to "arrange a meeting between our teams to strengthen air defenses.

"We had a very detailed discussion on joint production. We need it, America needs it."

The conversation came a day after Trump said he had a disappointing call with Putin.

Russia pummeled Kyiv with the largest drone attack of the war across the capital hours after Trump's conversation with Putin on Thursday.

Zelenskiy called the attack "deliberately massive and cynical."

Kyiv in the past received Patriot batteries and ammunition from the US in the form of aid under then-President Joe Biden.

Trump criticised him for sending weapons to Ukraine without getting anything in return, and since taking office has overseen a dramatic shake-up of relations with Kyiv.​

US President Donald Trump said Friday he was "very unhappy" about his telephone call with Vladimir Putin on the war in Ukraine, saying the Russian leader just wanted to "keep killing people."

"It's a very tough situation. I told you I was very unhappy with my call with President Putin. He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people, it's no good," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Trump also hinted that he may finally be ready to toughen sanctions against Russia, having held off for the past six months while he tried to persuade Putin to end the war.

"We talk about sanctions a lot," Trump said. "He understands that it may be coming."

Trump added that he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meanwhile had a "very strategic call" on Friday, as concerns mounted in Kyiv over US military aid deliveries.

Zelensky said earlier that the two leaders had agreed to work to "strengthen" Ukraine's air defenses, following Russia's largest drone and missile barrage of the invasion so far.

Trump said he had also discussed sending Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine in a separate call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday, although he had not yet agreed to do so.

Merz "feels they have to be protected," Trump said.​
