Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has demanded the impeachment and arrest of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

He made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon after visiting the graves of those killed in the BDR mutiny at the Banani Military Graveyard on National Martyred Army Day.

Nahid, also National Citizen Party (NCP) convenor, said: “We believe it is the responsibility of the new government to impeach the president and arrest him swiftly. He has made remarks against the [late] president Ziaur Rahman. He has also made remarks against the [late prime minister] Khaleda Zia.”

“We believe that the president, who is a mark of the ‘fascist’ regime, needs to be arrested quickly. In the interview he gave, he also violated his oath. Therefore, under no circumstances is he fit to remain in this office.”

The NCP leader said, “The first task of the first session of parliament should be to take steps to impeach the president of the ‘fascist’ regime.”

After the fall of the Awami League government, several organisations, including the Students Against Discrimination, set a deadline in October 2024 for the president to resign.

Protests continued outside Bangabhaban until late at night. Later, the protests were halted due to divisions between the groups.

Explaining the reasoning behind the demand, Nahid said: “When the July massacre took place, the president did not fulfil his responsibility as the guardian of the state. He remained silent. Because of his silence, this massacre occurred. So he is also involved in this massacre.”

“There have also been allegations of financial irregularities against him.”

Under the Constitution, the president may be impeached if two-thirds of the members of parliament support the motion. However, there is no precedent of a president being impeached in Bangladesh.

In the past, presidents in Bangladesh have always been elected from the majority party in parliament.

In November 2001, then-president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury was elected with the nomination of the BNP.

In 2002, the then-government moved to remove him. Amid preparations in parliament, he resigned from the post on Jun 21, 2002.​

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed says the future of the National Citizen Party (NCP) is promising, suggesting that the youth-led organisation could one day ascend to state power.

Speaking at a discussion and Iftar party marking the party’s first anniversary at Dhanmondi’s Abahani Club ground on Saturday, the minister lauded the NCP’s rapid political progress over the last year.

“The NCP has come a long way in just one year. Through political consensus and electoral alliances, they have managed to secure six seats in parliament,” Salahuddin said.

“These six seats will increase over time, and one day they may rise to state power. It takes time; nothing happens overnight,” he added.

The minister noted that the NCP’s emergence as a political force has encouraged greater youth participation in national politics, which he believes will drive the country forward by addressing the needs of the younger generation.

“I hope everyone accepts the ups and downs of this thorny political field. Those who could not accept these fluctuations did not survive in politics,” he remarked.

Salahuddin contrasted the NCP with parties that exist merely as "signboards”, asserting that the NCP truly represents the people's aspirations.

He urged all political entities to prioritise national interests despite their differences.

“There will be conflicts and debates, but we must remain united on national interests. We must make the National Parliament the centre of all discussions,” the minister added.

NCP Convenor Nahid Islam welcomed the home minister and other political leaders to the event.​

Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a member of parliament, on Saturday alleged that attempts are being made to rehabilitate the Awami League in the name of the Liberation War and the historic 7 March Speech of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, warning that such efforts would not be accepted.

“Attempts have begun to rehabilitate the Awami League in the name of the Liberation War and the historic 7 March speech. We want to say that the Liberation War is a matter of our pride, but Awami League has undermined that pride,” Nahid said while addressing an iftar programme organised by the NCP in Faridpur.

Nahid alleged that the Awami League had legitimised various crimes including enforced disappearances, killings and money laundering by invoking the Liberation War. “The Awami League cannot be rehabilitated in the name of the Liberation War, the 7 March speech or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

The NCP leader also accused the government of betraying the aspirations associated with the “July Charter,” saying they had taken two pledges based on the charter’s implementation order. “The ruling party has taken one of those pledges, but it has been the first to betray the aspirations of July and the July Charter.”

Expressing willingness to work constructively with the government, Nahid said the government must take oath under the reform council before the parliamentary session scheduled for the 12th.

Nahid further demanded the removal of what he termed a ‘fascist president’ in the first parliamentary session, warning that otherwise an 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami would be compelled to take to the streets.Bangladesh economic trends

Nahid also alleged that the government had already started politicising key state institutions. “We saw during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina how state institutions including the judiciary, administration and police were politicised. The current government has not even completed a month in office, yet we are already witnessing similar tendencies.”

Among others, special guests at the iftar programme included Sarjis Alam, chief organiser of the NCP’s northern region; Nizam Uddin, joint member secretary and Faridpur divisional organising secretary; Tariqul Islam, convener of Jatiya Juboshakti; and Zahid Ahsan, convener of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, along with central and divisional leaders of the NCP.​
