The National Citizens Party on Sunday said that they were promising to the countrymen that they would present them with a new democratic constitution, which would guarantee citizensโ€™ rights, ensure justice, and put an end to authoritarianism and dynastic politics in Bangladesh.Bangladesh-themed souvenirs

NCP convener Nahid Islam, addressing a street rally at Saheb Bazar zero point in Rajshahi city Sunday evening, also said that the July Proclamation must be incorporated into the new constitution.

NCP organised the street rally on the fifth day of the partyโ€™s countrywide programmes to mark the first anniversary of the uprising that ousted the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

โ€˜Those who refuse to incorporate the July Proclamation into the new constitution or bringing it in a legal framework, they are paving the way for a return to Mujibism and have declared themselves guardians of that ideology. We must build resistance against those who position themselves as protectors of Mujibism,โ€™ Nahid added.

Reiterating the partyโ€™s demands, Nahid said that they would build a new political order and a new system of governance based on merit and qualification.

Nahid once again reiterated that the national election must be held after the trial of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the leaders and activists of the fascist Awami League for committing massacre during the July-August uprising and fundamental reforms in various sectors.

โ€˜We want to see the trial of mass-murderer Hasina. We demand reforms, and we want to see a new constitution,โ€™ NCP convener Nahid Islam said while addressing a street rally in Rajshahi city Sunday evening.

Commemorating mass leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashaniโ€™s historic massive long march from Rajshahi towards Indiaโ€™s Farakka Barrage, demanding its demolition, Nahid said that they would begin a massive long march from Rajshahi if they had to reclaim their rightful share of river water and protect their borders.

Among others, NCP member secretary Akhter Hossain, chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, and senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara also spoke.

National Citizen Party (NCP) organised a "July Podojatra and Pothosobha" in Rajshahi this evening, aiming to renew its call for democratic reforms and decentralisation of power.

The event began around 6:00pm from Rajshahi Railgate in the city, with participation from different upazila units of the NCP.

Marching through the city streets, the procession concluded with a public gathering at Zero Point.

Addressing a crowd, NCP Convener Nahid Islam said, "This generation promises a new democratic constitution for Bangladesh. One that will ensure the rights of its people and end autocracy."

Referring to the events of August 5, Nahid said, "We had dreamt of rebuilding Bangladesh through reforms. But after August 5, different forces have blocked that path. Those who stand in the way of reform will never be forgiven by the people."

He also added, "Previously, our goal was the fall of fascism. Now, it is the reconstruction of Bangladesh. Before the election, reforms must be addressed, justice must be served. We want to see the trial of killer Hasina."

Paying tribute to historic movement, Nahid recalled Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani's Farakka Long March from Rajshahi, saying, "If we have to reclaim our share of rivers and protect our borders, we will launch another long march from Rajshahi."

"Development doesn't mean only Dhaka's development. We need decentralisation of power and resources. Rajshahi must have employment, education, healthcare, and industrial growth. That's why we held the uprising," said Nahid.

The NCP is observing a month-long nationwide programme titled "Desh Gorte July Podojatra (July march to build the nation)", which will take place across all 64 districts of Bangladesh.

Other speakers at the gathering included NCP Senior Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, Chief Organiser (northern region) Sarjis Alam, Chief Organiser (southern region) Hasnat Abdullah, Member Secretary Akhter Hossen and Senior Joint Secretary Tasnim Jara.

The programme ended with a call to gather again at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on August 3 and a pledge to fulfill the "July Declaration".

NCP urges natโ€™l unity for justice, reform, new constitution

National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Monday called upon all sections of society to unite to demand justice for the July mass killing, fundamental state reforms, and the adoption of a new constitution.

Addressing several rallies in Natore and Sirajganj, he said that they could not proceed to elections until justice was delivered for the July killings and enforced disappearances.

The aspirations behind the mass uprising -- driven by students and the public -- were for a corruption-free and impartial Bangladesh, but after August 5, many parties had distanced themselves from these demands, Nahid resented.Bangladesh-themed souvenirs

As part of the partyโ€™s ongoing month-long march programmes to mark the first anniversary of the July uprising that ousted the Awami League regime on 5 August 2024, the NCP convener alleged that attempts had been made to disrupt their events, noting that their banners were torn and obstructive tactics employed in Natore and Sirajganj.

He said that those who had faced bullets and narrowly escaped death would not be intimidated, warning that those who sought to revive a culture of fear were gravely mistaken and foolish.

Calling for fundamental reforms, Nahid stressed the urgent need for a July declaration and constitutional recognition of the peopleโ€™s uprising.

โ€˜The martyrs who participated in the uprising deserve state recognition and honour,โ€™ he said.

He called for a new constitution to replace the existing Awami League-era constitution, which he criticised for failing to protect the rights of the people over the past 50 years and for dividing society and the state.

Nahid said that the NCP would announce its manifesto on August 3 at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital, which would include the economic, social, and cultural liberation of all people and outline a plan for rebuilding a new Bangladesh.Bangladesh-themed souvenirs

As part of its nationwide programme from July 1 to August 5 marking the first anniversary of the uprising, the NCP launched its march on July 1 in Rangpur with prayers for uprising martyr Abu Sayed.

The party plans to continue marches across all districts until July 30, calling for the prosecution of the Awami League and its leaders over the massacres during the mass uprising.

They are also demanding reforms and the adoption of a new constitution aimed at establishing a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam said in Kushtia on Tuesday that the party would not accept foreign hegemony in Bangladesh anymore.

During the partyโ€™s ongoing programme marking the first anniversary of the 2024 July uprising, Nahid also said that the NCP would resist if any political party wanted to accept domination of foreign countries.

โ€˜We fought against Indian hegemony in the country following the path of Abrar Fahad. We will resist if any political party wants to become a slave of such foreign domination again. Citizens of Bangladesh will resist it,โ€™ said Nahid while addressing a brief rally at Nimtola Bazar in Kushtia on the eighth day of the partyโ€™s countrywide rally.

Nahid was also a former central leader of Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the July uprising to oust the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

He stated, โ€˜We have become free from the slavery of India. We have become free from the slavery of โ€˜Pindiโ€™ (Rawalpindi, once the capital of Pakistan).โ€™

โ€˜Bangladesh will stand tall with freedom and sovereignty in the upcoming days. We will create our politics and our state,โ€™ said the NCP leader.

Nahid also said that the NCP would continue its struggle until ensuring trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution for the country.

Earlier, in the morning, NCP leaders and activists offered prayers at the grave of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad, who was brutally beaten to death inside his residential hall on October 7, 2019, by leaders of the university Chhatra League unit after he posted comments on Facebook criticising Bangladeshโ€™s agreements with India.Bangladesh-themed souvenirs

After the prayers, Nahid said that Abrar was an inspiration to organise protests against Indian aggression and against fascism.

The NCP began the nationwide march on July 1 from Rangpur by offering prayers for uprising martyr Abu Sayed as part of its July 1- August 5 countrywide programme to mark the first anniversary of the uprising.

A group of students and youth leaders who led the uprising formed the NCP on February 28.

NCP leaders and activists, including the partyโ€™s chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara, senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adeeb and joint convener Nusrat Tabassum, among others, participated in the marches and rallies in Kushtia and Meherpur.

The NCP is scheduled to hold marches in all districts till July 30, demanding trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution aiming at building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.Bangladesh-themed souvenirs

The party leaders and activists will hold marches and rallies in Chuadanga and Jhenaidah districts today.

Several members of the National Citizen Party (NCP) were reportedly attacked in Dhakaโ€™s Mohammadpur area on Wednesday when they protested alleged extortion and demanded action against illegal establishments in Krishi Market.

According to M M Shoaib, office coordinator of NCPโ€™s Dhaka North unit, NCP activists from the Mohammadpur unit visited the Zone-5 office of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to submit a demand for the removal of illegal structures and the reinstatement of legal shop owners at the Krishi Market.

He said that a group of miscreants, led by Mahbub Alamโ€”known to be a close associate of the deposed Awami League's former mayor Atiqโ€”launched a sudden attack and attempted murder on NCP representatives in Mohammadpur.

Several people, including Mostakim, Kabir Sujan, Zaved, Shawon, and Sani, sustained injuries in this incident and were admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for treatment, he added.

On the other hand, Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hasan said they were informed of the incident by an official of DNCCโ€™s Zone-5.

โ€œWe sent a team to the spot and learned that a dispute had broken out between two groups over money and other issues. A scuffle occurred, but we could not confirm whether any political party, including the NCP, was involved. It did not appear to be a political matter,โ€ the OC said.

No formal complaint has been received from either side as of yet, added the OC.

National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has called for building pro-Bangladesh politics for the betterment of the people.

"Chuadanga, stand for the education, health and development of the people. We must stand for reforms in building the country,โ€ he told a street rally in Chuadanga.

Nahid said, โ€œIf the Mujibist fascist party is to come to Bangladesh, it will have to come over our livesโ€.

He sought peopleโ€™s support for its demand for judicial reforms and a new constitution, saying if the people support NCPโ€™s demand, they wonโ€™t be disappointed as the party will gift them justice-based politics.

This new political party, which has emerged from the mass uprising, is holding a nationwide 'July March' programme demanding justice, reforms and a new constitution since July 1 and it will continue till July 29.

โ€œSheikh Hasina's government launched enforced disappearances and killings with the direct and indirect support of the Indian government. It is the responsibility of the students and youth to protect the borders, soil, people and map of Bangladesh. The National Citizen Party will work on the basis of that responsibility,โ€ he said.

Nahid said, โ€œKiller Hasina and her party are responsible for all the killings of the July mass uprising. The Indian government has given shelter to this terrorist and murderous force in its own country.โ€

In this context, he said, the human dignity and sovereignty of the people of Bangladesh have been violated by Indian domination.

โ€œIndia is depriving us from our fair share of water. We have been repeatedly humiliated politically, culturally and economically,โ€ he added.

Nahid said, if India wants cordial relations with Bangladesh, that relationship will be based on equality, fairness and dignity.

Trial of fascists, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution are essential for rebuilding Bangladesh, said National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam in Magura on Thursday.

At a rally in Magura as part of the partyโ€™s current programme marking the first anniversary of the July uprising, Nahid said, โ€˜We have to rebuild the country. The struggle to rebuild Bangladesh has begun after the July uprising.โ€™

โ€˜Trial of those people involved with the fascist regime, fundamental reforms, and a new constitution are essential to rebuild Bangladesh,โ€™ said Nahid at the Vaina More rally in the district town on the 10th day of the partyโ€™s countrywide rally.

Nahid was also a former central leader of Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the July uprising to oust the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

He stated that there existed some crises even after the uprising, adding that the work on a new constitution and a July Charter to ensure fundamental reforms was not progressing.

The NCP leader called on people to become aware of those crises and also to be vocal against corruption and extortion.

The NCP began its national-level march on July 1 from Rangpur by offering prayers for uprising martyr Abu Sayed as part of its July 1- August 5 countrywide programme to mark the first anniversary of the uprising.

A group of student and youth leaders who led the uprising formed the NCP on February 28.

While addressing the rally in Magura, Nahid also reasserted the partyโ€™s demand for a July charter and a July declaration.

โ€˜One year of the July uprising will be completed on August 5. We want the July charter and the July declaration by August 3,โ€™ said Nahid, adding that the NCP, along with students and people, will take to the streets if the government together with the political parties fails to produce the July declaration by that time.

NCP leaders and activists, including the partyโ€™s chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, senior joint convener Samanta Sharmeen, senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara and senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adeeb, among others, participated in the marches and rallies in Magura and Narail districts.

The NCP is scheduled to hold marches in all districts till July 30, demanding trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution aiming at building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

The party leaders and activists will hold marches and rallies in Jashore and Satkhira districts on Friday.

NCP announces political battle if denied โ€˜Shaplaโ€™ electoral symbol

A delegation of National Citizen Party (NCP) briefs the media after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission in Agargaon, Dhaka on 13 July 2025. Prothom Alo

National Citizen Party (NCP) has announced that it will launch a political battle if the party is denied โ€˜Shaplaโ€™ (water lily) as its electoral symbol.

NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari announced this at a press briefing after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the election commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday.

โ€œWe have no alternative to the Shapla as our electoral symbol. We have checked legal ways and found that there is no obstacle to us getting it. If any hurdle is created, we will fight it politically,โ€ Nasiruddin Patwari said.

The NCP chief coordinator also raised questions on the neutrality of the election commission (EC) members. โ€œThe EC must be restructured before the election. It is straightforward. Even the law under which the current EC was formed must be changed,โ€ he stressed.

He also alleged that many people from EC are acting as spokespersons for political parties. However, he added that those of this EC who have proven their integrity could remain in office.

A five-member NCP delegation met the CEC. The delegation included chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, chief organiser (southern region) Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (northern region) Sarjis Alam, joint secretary Zahirul Islam, and joint convener Khalid Saifullah.

Joint secretary Zahirul Islam Islam briefed the media on the summary of the meeting. He said that the delegation submitted a new application requesting the Shapla symbol be allocated to their party.

Apart from this, the NCP delegation also urged the EC to remove the โ€˜boatโ€™, electoral symbol of Awami League, from its list.

Zahirul Islam said that since the Awami Leagueโ€™s registration is currently suspended, its symbol should be removed from the ECโ€™s list. The commission has assured them that the matter will be given special consideration.

Replying to a query on whether NCP can demand for the Shapla symbol since it is the national emblem, Zahirul Islam said the Shapla is not the national emblem alone; rather, it is a part of the national emblem, which also has other elements including jute leaves, paddy sheaves, and stars.

Pointing out that those elements are already used by other political parties, the NCP leader said, โ€œThe national emblem has specific colours and dimensions.โ€

In that case, they brought the matter to the ECโ€™s notice that there is no legal barrier to getting Shapla as an electoral symbol, he added.

NCP also raised the issue of overseas voters being allowed to vote. Zahirul Islam said the commission assured them of considering the matter.

Recently, NCP applied for official registration as a political party. During the meeting, the delegation inquired about the progress of their application.

Zahirul Islam said the commission informed them that the registration process is ongoing.

BNP stands for protecting Mujib-made constitution, says NCP
Our Correspondent . Patuakhali 15 July, 2025, 00:04

The National Citizen Party on Monday accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party of protecting the 1972 constitution adopted by the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman-led government after the countryโ€™s independence.

The party convener Nahid Islam made the remark while addressing a roadside rally in front of Circuit House in Patuakhali district town.

The rally was organised on the 14th day of NCPโ€™s countrywide programme marking the July uprising that led to the fall of the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024.

Nahid also alleged that the BNP activists had now become extortionists and thugs and were defending Mujibism.

โ€˜Their hypocrisy is exposed,โ€™ Nahid said, adding that conspiracies were on to suppress the July uprising leaders who fought against a corrupt and mafia-driven political system.

Nahid also accused politically motivated media reports of undermining the leaders of the July uprising.

The rally was presided over by Supreme Court lawyer and NCPโ€™s Patuakhali district unit coordinator Zahirul Islam Musa.

The NCPโ€™s chief organiser for the south zone, Hasnat Abdullah and senior joint convener Samanta Sharmin, among others, also spoke.

Earlier in the day, NCP central leaders led a mass procession that began from the New Market area and passed through Launch Ghat, Chawk Bazar, Puran Bazar, Mukul Cinema Hall, Banani and the municipal office in the district town.
