NCP still sees possibility of seat-sharing with BNP or Jamaat

Leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) believe that there is still an opportunity for seat-sharing with the BNP up until the withdrawal of nomination papers.

Similarly, they also see the possibility of a seat-sharing arrangement with Jamaat-e-Islami.

However, no final decision has yet been made regarding whether the NCP will ultimately reach a seat-sharing agreement with any party.

The BNP has already announced candidates in 272 of the 300 parliament constituencies. In this situation, questions have arisen about whether there is any remaining scope for seat-sharing with the NCP.

This is because the BNP has announced party candidates in all the constituencies where NCP’s top leaders are potential contenders. Jamaat-e-Islami had already announced candidates in those constituencies earlier.

NCP joint convener Monira Sharmin told Prothom Alo that alongside preparations for contesting the elections independently, discussions with various parties about alliances or seat-sharing would also continue.

NCP convener Nahid Islam has purchased party nomination form to contest from Dhaka-11—comprising Badda, Bhatara, Rampura, Hatirjheel police stations (partly) and nine wards of Dhaka north city corporation.

Meanwhile, member secretary Akhtar Hossain has taken nomination form to contest from Rangpur-4, which includes Pirgachha and Kaunia upazilas.

Among other top NCP leaders, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari has taken nomination form for Dhaka-18; chief organiser for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, for Panchagarh-1; chief organiser for the southern region, Hasnat Abdullah, for Comilla-4; senior joint chief coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud for Noakhali-6; senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adib for Dhaka-14; and senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara for Dhaka-9.

Initially, the BNP did not announce candidates in the constituencies of two senior NCP leaders. On 3 November, the BNP declared party candidates in 237 constituencies but left Dhaka-9 and Dhaka-18 vacant. In the second phase, announced last Thursday (4 December), the BNP named candidates in 36 more constituencies, including those two.

As a result, many believe that the possibility of a BNP–NCP understanding has ended. However, several top NCP leaders still feel that the door to compromise has not closed, noting that many things can happen before nomination papers are withdrawn.

Seat-sharing or forming an electoral alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami is also under discussion. At an NCP executive council meeting on 10 October, a section of party leaders expressed support for entering into an electoral alliance with Jamaat. That section of the party remains in the same position.

Party sources say that informal discussions between the NCP and Jamaat, as well as other Islamic parties, are ongoing. NCP policymakers are reviewing the potential benefits and drawbacks of entering into an alliance or seat-sharing arrangement with them.

In addition, in late November, the NCP became involved in a process to form an electoral alliance—outside BNP and Jamaat—along with the AB Party (Amar Bangladesh Party), Bangladesh Rashtra Sanshkar, and Gono Odhikar Parishad. The alliance was slated to be formally launched on 27 November at the Shaheed Abu Sayed Convention Center in Shahbagh, Dhaka. Leaders of the four parties held meetings until late night the previous day.

At that meeting, one party proposed including United Peoples Bangladesh (UP Bangladesh)—a political platform formed by an initiative of some former leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir—in the proposed alliance. NCP leaders opposed the proposal. Meanwhile, differences of opinion emerged within the Gono Odhikar Parishad regarding joining the alliance. Ultimately, the alliance did not progress.

Yesterday, Prothom Alo spoke separately with two top leaders from two of the parties about whether the proposed alliance would materialise. They said that the likelihood of the alliance forming is low.

Asked whether the NCP is moving toward contesting independently or pursuing seat-sharing with a major party, senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adib told Prothom Alo yesterday afternoon, “Within the next two or three days, our candidate list for all 300 constituencies will be finalised. We are preparing to contest independently. However, until the withdrawal of nomination papers, there remains the possibility of seat-sharing with various parties.”

Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has announced a new political alliance called the “Democratic Reform Alliance,” formed through the coalition of three political parties: the NCP, the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), and the Rashtra Sanskar Andolan.

The alliance was announced with a commitment to fulfilling the aspirations for change that emerged after the July mass uprising in Bangladesh and to prevent the country from returning to the path of old politics.

This Sunday afternoon, at an urgent press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium in Segun Bagicha, the capital, Nahid Islam made this announcement.

At the event, AB Party chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju and Rashtra Sanskar Andolan president Hasnat Kaiyum were also present.

Nahid Islam said that the announced “Democratic Reform Alliance” is not merely an electoral alliance, but a political coalition. The alliance has come together with a focus on national dignity and economic liberation. It will participate in the upcoming national parliamentary elections and work to continue the journey toward economic freedom.

NCP sceptical about EC’s neutrality, capacity
Staff Correspondent 12 December, 2025, 00:33

The National Citizen Party on Thursday expressed the party’s scepticism about the Election Commission’s neutrality and capacity to hold the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections in a free, fair and neutral manner.

The party’s chief coordinator, Nasiruddin Patwary, just after the chief election commissioner’s election scheduled announcement, shared his party’s view with journalists at the party’s temporary office in the capital’s Banglamotor area.

He praised the interim government and the Election Commission for announcing the election schedule, but said, ‘There is a lack of neutrality and capacity.’

Citing that NCP campaigners were stabbed in Narayanganj and that the use of illegal arms had been exposed in many places, he said that his party had serious doubts about how effectively the Election Commission would be able to control muscle power, undisclosed money, and the influence of godfathers to ensure a fair election.

‘We also doubt how far the Election Commission can act independently, and remain free from partisan influence,’ he added.

Saying that the interim government was posting deputy commissioners and superintendents of police through a lottery system, he questioned the process at it seemed non-transparent to the NCP.

Nasiruddin said that his party sought clarification from the interim government about the questions of the scheduled referendum to be held simultaneously with the Jatiya Sangsad elections.

‘We received no answers so far,’ he said.

Confirming that the NCP will participate in the upcoming national election, he urged the voters to guard the polling booths so that no party’s hoodlums could take control of them.

He added that he did not see sufficient capacity in the law enforcement agencies.

‘We had also called for a reconstitution of the current Election Commission. But the election is going to be held under them,’ he added.

Nasiruddin said that his party-nominated contestants were strictly instructed to follow the Election Commission-set code of conduct.

He expressed his hope that the commission would ensure enforcement of the code of conduct also on contestants from the other political parties.

‘Otherwise, we will assume the Election Commission is acting in a discriminatory manner,’ he said.

National Citizen Party (NCP) chief Nahid Islam has raised alarms over the capability of the country’s intelligence agencies following the attack on Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi.

On Monday, Nahid said the country’s intelligence agencies were used to “suppress all opposition” for the past 16 years.

“Our intelligence was so experienced that they carried out abductions and killings with precision. But since Aug 5, their skills seem to have vanished.

“They can no longer make arrests. They allow killers to cross Bangladesh’s borders. Even after 72 hours, they fail to capture the perpetrators.”

Several voices have called for the resignation of the home advisor over the attack on Hadi.

Nahid stressed that the focus should not be limited to the advisor’s position; the effectiveness of the intelligence agencies also needs scrutiny.

He added, “It is not just the home advisor. We must discuss the deep state behind these operations and the functioning of our intelligence agencies.”

We stand united against collaborators of 1971, 2024 : Nahid
JU Correspondent 16 December, 2025, 19:14

The convener of the National Citizen Party, Nahid Islam, said on Tuesday that his party, together with the people of the country, would stand united against the collaborators of the Liberation War of 1971 and the 2024 July mass uprising.

‘Our message to the people of Bangladesh is clear. We stand united. We, the people and the youth of Bangladesh, are united against the collaborators of 1971 and 2024. Ahead lies a Bangladesh where our victory will surely come,’ said Nahid while speaking to reporters after paying tribute to martyred freedom fighters at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Victory Day.

He also alleged that successive governments in Bangladesh had betrayed the core promises of the 1971 Liberation War, allowing inequality and authoritarianism to take root and forcing citizens to repeatedly rise in protest.

Nahid said the country’s post-independence history was marked by broken commitments to equality, human dignity and social justice.

‘We achieved independence, but in 54 years we have repeatedly seen the people of Bangladesh betrayed,’ Nahid said.

‘The ideals on which this country was founded were never fully realised,’ he added.

He said the failure to uphold those ideals had culminated in mass uprisings in 2024, which he described as part of a longer historical struggle stretching from the anti-colonial movement to the war of independence.

‘From 1947 to 1971, and again from 1971 to 2024, the people of this land have waged historic struggles,’ he said, adding that his party considered itself an inheritor of those movements and aimed to build Bangladesh’s future on that legacy.

Nahid also said the safety of ‘July fighters’ could not be ensured by relying solely on the government and police, urging greater public organisation and vigilance.

‘We cannot depend on the government or law enforcement to guarantee our security. We have to ensure it ourselves,’ he said, calling on citizens to remain alert as the country approaches elections.

Citing the referendum, he said that NCP would campaign for structural changes to governance and the party-backed candidates would seek public support with a ‘yes’ vote for reforms.

He said forces linked to the previous fascist regime were attempting to destabilise the country and undermine the electoral process, while ordinary citizens were seeking stability and a normal law-and-order situation.

Nahid criticised the interim government for what he said was its failure to arrest those responsible for a reported attempt on the life of Osman Hadi, saying the incident highlighted ongoing weaknesses in law enforcement.

BNP-Jamaat compete to capture Awami League votes: Nahid Islam

National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam addresses a meeting titled 'Elections Dialogue: Your Party Voter Questions' at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, on Tuesday afternoon. Prothom Alo

Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has commented that BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are actively competing to sway Awami League votes in their favour.

He said they need to show some examples to attract these votes, and there are even discussions about withdrawing cases filed against Awami League leaders.

Nahid Islam made this remark at an exchange of views held at the Media Bazaar of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, today, Tuesday afternoon.

The meeting, titled “Elections Dialogue: Your Party Voter Questions,” was organised by The Daily Star.

At the meeting, Nahid Islam said that in Cumilla’s Debidwar constituency, 200 Awami League activists have joined BNP, including those accused in the July genocide cases. He added that this is just one example, and there are many more such cases.

Referring to the Awami League’s failure to address the issue, the National Citizen Party’s convener said that although there was talk of forming a Truth Commission, it never materialised.

He added that it should be made clear that those in society who supported the Awami League but were not involved in genocide or terrorism have the right to citizenship and political participation, including joining any party. This distinction should have been made.

Nahid Islam said that supporting a fascist party is a crime. However, they can seek forgiveness and be rehabilitated in society.

At that time, the session’s moderator, Daily Star’s consulting editor Kamal Ahmed, asked Nahid Islam, “Are you in favour of forming a Reconciliation Commission?”

In response, Nahid Islam said, “We are in favour of doing this.” He added that if it is not done, the issue of the Awami League will repeatedly arise and it will trouble the parties.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general Hamidur Rahman Azad, and former president and presidium member of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Mujahidul Islam Selim, among others, were present.

NCP seeks revision of nomination submission, withdrawal deadlines
Jamaat sees no level playing field

Staff Correspondent 24 December, 2025, 23:36

The National Citizen Party on Wednesday expressed concern about the Election Commission’s capacity for holding the national polls on February 12 next year.

The party urged the commission to reconsider the dates for submission of nomination papers and withdrawal of candidature, keeping the voting date unchanged.

Speaking after a meeting between an NCP delegation and chief election commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the commission headquarters in Dhaka, NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary said that the party had requested the commission to consider whether these dates could be revised.

The Election Commission on December 11 announced the schedule for the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order, both set for February 12 next year.

According to the schedule, the last date for submission of nomination papers is December 29, scrutiny between December 30 and January 4, and the final date for withdrawal of candidature is January 20.

The election campaign will run between January 22 and 7:30am on February 10, 48 hours before balloting.

Nasiruddin alleged that the Awami League was attempting to destabilise Bangladesh to delay the national election.

‘The Election Commission wants to conduct the election on February 12. From the National Citizen Party, we have emphasised that this date must not be postponed. We have requested the EC to ensure the polls are held on schedule,’ he said.

On concerns about the election, Nasiruddin said that the NCP was aware of risks, including the killing of one aspirant, and urged the EC to ensure security for all candidates.

‘We have asked the Election Commission not to make any small mistakes that can cause the polling date to be postponed,’ he said.

The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, on the other hand, on Wednesday urged the Election Commission to ensure a level playing field in the upcoming elections, saying that providing VVIP facilities to some candidates and denying them to others undermines fairness.

‘If some individuals receive numerous facilities, including VVIP privileges, while others do not, that cannot be considered a level playing field,’ said Jamaat assistant secretary general Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair while talking to reporters after a meeting with the chief election commissioner at Nirbachon Bhaban.

A three-member Jamaat delegation met the chief election commissioner to discuss their concerns.

Zubair said that senior party leaders, including the Jamaat amir and the party’s secretary general, would be conducting extensive tours across the country during the election period, and the party had highlighted their security needs.

He emphasised that ensuring equal treatment for all candidates was crucial for the credibility and fairness of the electoral process.

National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam on Thursday welcomed the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh, saying his homecoming would further consolidate Bangladesh’s multiparty democratic practice.

In a message posted on his verified Facebook account in the evening, Nahid wrote that Tarique Rahman has returned to the country after 17 years, calling it a positive reflection of the democratic struggle that restored a citizen’s right to return to his own land.

“The return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to his homeland as a Bangladeshi citizen and political leader represents a meaningful outcome of the democratic movement,” he said.

Nahid said Tarique Rahman and his family had been subjected to state repression due to political dissent, forcing him to remain in exile for a prolonged period.

“Through the mass uprising, built on the blood sacrifice of thousands of martyrs, a situation has emerged that has enabled him and his family to return home,” he wrote.

Expressing hope for the future, Nahid said Bangladesh must uphold democratic values so that no political leader faces state persecution for holding dissenting views.

Referring to the political environment of the past decade and a half, he said the path toward a freer Bangladesh has now opened, with the core objective being to ensure the rule of law and political rights for every citizen.

Nahid expressed confidence that Tarique Rahman’s return would further strengthen the practice of multi-party democracy in the country.

“In the new political reality, our main challenge is to foster coexistence and build a culture of healthy political competition,” he said.

Welcoming Tarique Rahman back to the country, Nahid expressed the hope that his participation would be constructive in shaping Bangladesh’s democratic future.
