Bangladesh, which once took a strong stance against India, is now facing serious challenges. Under the Biden administration, the country received significant financial aid, intelligence, and military support from the U.S., empowering Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus's government to adopt a tough approach toward India. However, with Donald Trump's return to power, the situation has completely changed. The Trump administration has halted financial aid worth hundreds of crores and assigned three officials to handle the situation in Bangladesh. This sudden shift has created uncertainty for thousands of people in the country, raising concerns about their future.

International Development (USAID). Numerous organizations in the country relied on this financial assistance, employing thousands of doctors, engineers, and workers. However, USAID has now instructed these agencies to cease operations immediately. The abrupt halt in funding has led to panic among employees, with many fearing job losses. Some organizations have already begun preparing for layoffs, while the lack of alternative employment opportunities is expected to worsen the crisis.

How much aid was given to Bangladesh by US?

The United States provided financial assistance to Bangladesh through its agencies to support sectors like health, agriculture, environment, good governance, and democracy. This annual funding amounted to approximately USD 200 million. Additionally, in 2023, the U.S. provided USD 490 million in one instance and USD 550 million in another. In September, USAID had also announced another USD 200 million in aid.

Security concerns for Bangladesh

Since the Myanmar crisis, the US has provided USD 2.5 billion in aid to Bangladesh, with most of the funds allocated for Rohingya refugees. Now, Bangladesh fears that without continued financial support, it will struggle to provide food and water for the refugees. This could escalate security concerns, as Rohingya refugees have previously clashed with the Bangladeshi army and police, leading to violent unrest in the country.
