@Old School I just checked out some portions of books online. They define the marshals as paramilitary. It seems they fall under the universal definition of paramilitary.

But as you pointed out a legal paramilitary might not exist in the legal books of law enforcement of America.

If I want to call you, I will call you by the official name given to you by your parents. That is the right way. Any other name will never be your official name and may even sound abusive. I hope you understand.
Para-military is a very sensitive name in the US, and the government sometimes calls them terrorists if discovered.

Anyone working outside the US military act is officially known as civilian. It is wrong to parallel them with military. US military must obtain official permission from the civilian authority to appear in public in uniform let alone entering a civilian area or city. They are not permitted to take part in anything outside their bases.

It's like race. It's a sensitive term, but there is a loose universal definition of a "black person" and a "white person" although not official. Same for paramilitary.

There may be an unofficial universal definition of paramilitary which US Marshals would match with but the official American definition is negative, although non-officials describe it as such.

Every law enforcement organization has a tactical unit: specially trained weapons and tactics. This includes DEA, ATF, and also Marshals. None of the US federal enforcement has a default para-military status, which implies that vast majority of its operators are armed with heavier weapons.
