State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat on Wednesday said that the government is working to make the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) and the country's film industry as a whole self reliant, reducing their dependency on the government.

"I think no industry should depend on subsidies, as the subsidy-enjoying industry always depends on the government. Therefore, we want to create an environment so that FDC and our film industry can be self-reliant," he said.

The state minister said this while addressing a discussion at the FDC in the city's Tejgaon area this afternoon, marking the National Film Day, BSS reports.

Film actor Ferdous Ahmed, MP, spoke at the function as the special guest, with FDC Managing Director Nuzhat Yeasmin in the chair.

Arafat said there is no stronger media than cinema to present any country with dignity in the global arena and added, "If we want to present our country with dignity before the world through cinema, we have to produce quality films."

Noting that there is a necessity to create a favourable environment to make quality films, he said, "I will try my level best to create such an environment."

Referring to the Prime Minister's instructions over the development of the country's film industry, the state minister said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already given me some instructions regarding films. She directed for establishing Cineplex at the district level, which will be able to be self-reliant".

He emphasised creating a way of earning to make the film industry self-reliant and said, "I myself have enthusiasm to work on Bangladeshi films. I think if we can create the environment, everything will be done automatically, and we could take forward our culture through the films."

Arafat added, "We have to establish our dominance in the film industry in South Asia and try to go beyond it."

Pointing out the challenges posed by technological advancement in the film industry, he said, "We have to think about converting the challenges into opportunities innovatively and create scopes to go forward."

Noted playwright M Hamid presented the keynote paper in the discussion while film director Dr Matin Rahman and Editors Guild President Abu Musa Debu spoke, among others.

Earlier, the state minister inaugurated the National Film Day programme by releasing balloons and led a rally on the FDC premises.

Idhika Paul promotes Shakib's "Rajkumar"

Idhika Paul made her silver screen debut with Himel Ashraf's "Priyotoma" and gained immense fame for her role as Iti in the film. Her bubbly and spontaneous performance alongside Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan, won her love from Bangladeshi fans as they recognise her as 'Priyotoma'.

Although Shakib Khan starrer "Rajkumar" gained immense fame after its release last Eid, it has struggled to generate much buzz lately with its songs or posters.

In an effort to promote the movie, Idhika Paul posted a status urging her fans to have faith in "Rajkumar" and to watch the film this Eid.

"This Eid, 'Rajkumar' will hit theatres. As your beloved 'Priyotoma,' I extend my congratulations and best wishes to the entire team behind this film, including producer Arshad Adnan, director Himel Ashraf bhai, and, of course, Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan," read her post.

"It is hope that bridges the gap between good and better, sustaining us each day; expectation is an enduring sentiment. With that sentiment in mind, let us rally behind this film. Let 'Rajkumar' triumph and win the hearts of all. As your 'Priyotoma,' that is my heartfelt wish for you all."

Notably, American actress Courtney Coffey stars alongside Shakib Khan in "Rajkumar", produced by Versatile Media. The latest reports indicate that the film will be screened in over a hundred theatres across the country from Eid day. Additionally, there are plans for its release in the United States, Canada, and Dubai.

Several movies are set to premiere this Eid, yet the complete list of hall venues hasn't been disclosed by the producers. Star Cineplex has recently unveiled its Eid week schedule, featuring eight new films across seven of its branches.

Helmed by Mishuk Moni, "Deyaler Desh" has got the highest number of shows among the eight movies. 17 shows will be screened daily across all branches of Cineplex of the film. Sariful Razz and Shobnom Bubly have played the protagonists in it.

The movie trailer depicts Razz and Bubly, two working-class individuals deeply in love, until tragedy strikes with Bubly's sudden demise. Following her death, Razz chooses to live alongside her lifeless body. The trailer and accompanying song have sparked significant debates on social media, ever since their release.

Himel Ashraf's "Rajkumar" and Gias Uddin Selim's "Kajol Rekha" received 13 shows each. Additionally, "Omar" obtained 11 shows, "Mona: Jinn 2" secured seven, "Meghna Konnya" and "Green Card" each attained two, while "Ahare Jibon" was scheduled for three shows.

Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Senior Manager of Media and Marketing at Star Cineplex, holds reservations about releasing numerous movies during a single Eid, despite the decision to release eight films this Eid. He believes that rather than focusing on releases on Eid, films should be distributed consistently throughout the year.

Shakib Khan talks about 'Rajkumar', shares his plans for Eid celebrations

As the Eid festivities and celebrations are in full swing in Bangladesh, superstar Shakib Khan's much-anticipated film "Rajkumar" is hitting a milestone by securing screenings in a whopping 127 theatres across the country.

With tickets selling out for the next two days at the country's most prominent theatre, Star Cineplex, the anticipation for the grand reception of the film is palpable. Apart from Shakib Khan, the film features American actress Courtney Coffey, along with Tariq Anam Khan and Dilara Zaman, amongst others.

For over two decades, Eid festivities have been incomplete without the anticipation and excitement for Shakib Khan's blockbuster releases. Each year, audiences eagerly await his cinematic gifts, turning Eid into a celebration not just of cultural and religious significance but also a cinematic event.

Following the phenomenal success of "Priyotoma" last Eid, the superstar is once again poised to captivate audiences with his latest blockbuster, "Rajkumar". With bated breath, he looks forward to the accolades and the warmth of his fans' reception, hoping to replicate, if not surpass the joy and success that "Priyotoma" brought to many during the festive season.

With the joy of Eid, hope and anticipation for his film, Shakib Khan gets candid about his Eid celebration plans in an exclusive interview with The Daily Star.

How's your Eid going so far?

The celebration of Eid is unfolding pretty much as it does every year for me. Like every year, I began the day having some delicious paeesh (Bengali traditional dessert) made by my mother, then headed to offer prayers. I have plans to spend some quality time with my sons. Of course, I will be keeping an eye on the film updates in the afternoon. It's all about enjoying the day with loved ones and exchanging greetings with friends and well-wishers. So, I will try to catch up with my friends and family as well.

Your film 'Rajkumar' is generating a lot of buzz. Why should people catch this film during Eid?

"Rajkumar" is more than just a film; it's a cinematic experience. We've put our hearts into making it the best it can be. The film showcases stunning locations, both in Bangladesh and America. Audiences will be captivated by the scenic beauty on screen. We've left no stone unturned in ensuring it's a top-notch production.

A record-breaking 11 new films are hitting the screens this Eid. What's your take on such a large number of releases?

Well, the decision to release a film ultimately lies with the producers, who invest their resources into it. But one has to consider whether releasing this many films will be financially viable. If producers end up in debt, it affects the industry as a whole. As for me, I prefer not to comment on the number of releases; it's a personal choice for each filmmaker, is what I feel.

Your filmography seems to be getting more selective. What's the reason behind this approach?

I believe in quality over quantity when it comes to films. That's why I'm taking on fewer projects each year. Sure, it's a financial hit for me personally, but I want to focus on doing meaningful work. Take "Rajkumar", for example. After "Priyotoma", I wanted to ensure the same level of excellence. So, I'm being picky about the projects I take on.

Do you have anything to say to your fans and audience?

Through my work, I aim to bring honour to our country and Bengali cinema on the global stage. I hope "Rajkumar" resonates with Bengali-speaking audiences worldwide. With your love and blessings, I hope to go far. Remember to cherish this Eid with your loved ones with Bangla cinema, and thank you for your unwavering support.

Addressing questions about her relationship with Shakib Khan, Bubly responded, "I don't know if I have the same love as before, but I love him. There is some pride involved. Misunderstandings arise because we don't discuss things between us; he reacts based on what others say."

In response to inquiries about her plans and whether she would consider marriage or relationships in the future, Bubly asserted, "There will never be any room for love or relationships in my life. I am just focused on my work and giving importance to my child. This decision will never change in the future."

Bubly also addressed rumors surrounding her marriage and clarified, "Shakib took care of Moharana soon after our marriage. We got married in Pubail. Close directors and producers were present there. Whatever rumors are being spread have no basis."

This upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, audiences' over bound excitement is even higher with Shakib Khan and American actress Courtney Coffey's starrer much-anticipated movie titled 'Rajkumar'.

So far, the two recently released songs from the movie, 'Rajkumar' and 'Borbaad', have received mixed reactions from the audiences.

However, Shakib Khan's recent unveiling of 'Ami Ekai Rajkumar' and his heartfelt message dedicating the song to his fans, who are adorably called 'Shakibians', made this song a bit special.

In the song released via Shakib Khan's official Facebook page last Friday at 7:00pm, Shakib, dressed in a flamboyant fit, dances in the video alongside hundreds of dancers surrounded by a multicolored designed set. Notably, Ashok Raja is credited to have choreographed the song.

Shakib's charm is undeniable in the music video, and it is also a testament to his understanding of what his fans expect from him.

The Dhallywood actor's winsome smile and signature dance moves made the latest song an instant crowd favourite.

Although the previous two songs from the film couldn't garner much fanfare, this new song has been the talk of the town since its release. Shamim Hasan voiced 'Ami Ekai Rajkumar' which was penned by Ferari Forhad and composed by Emon Chowdhury.

The filming of the song for the Himel Ashraf directorial film took place in January this year at BFDC. Furthermore, approximately 300 dance artistes have actively participated in the song's shooting.

Director Himel Ashraf expressed his confidence regarding the movie's playlist, and said, "I can't help but feel like the songs in the movie 'Rajkumar' will surpass those of 'Priyotoma'. These songs will be well-received by the audience."

Star Cineplex takes down three Eid films amidst intense competition

1713219997208.png

Out of 11 films that were released during the festival, some are performing well, while others have not met expectations from the producers.

Three films fell off from the Eid race in the country's premier multiplex, Star Cineplex. On the third and fifth day of Eid-ul-Fitr respectively, Kazi Hayat directorial film "Green Card" and Chotku Ahmed's government-granted film "Ahare Jibon" were taken down. However, both movies are still running shows at Lion Cinemas.

Fuad Chowdhury directorial "Meghna Konnya" is another film was taken down from the multiplex. The film stars Qazi Nawshaba Ahmed, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Shatabdi Wadud, Samonty Das Shoumi, and Sajjad Hossain, among others.

According to the associates of Star Cineplex, the films could not sustain business at the halls.

Many involved in the film industry have expressed their opinions about the release of movies during Eid. Some argued that releasing 11 movies during Eid was not a good decision at all. It was a bad business decision to release more than four films during Eid. Some also criticised the release of three movies starring Sariful Razz during Eid, stating that it would have been better for the audience if only one of his movies was released during the festival.

Drawing inspiration from Kurosawa Akira's memoir by the same name, the film's title offers a glimpse into the real lives of Farooki and Tisha, a renowned celebrity couple in Bangladesh who hold significant stature in the country's film industry.

Expressing his sentiments, Farooki shared to Variety, "This is a special film for me and Tisha. Personal, embarrassing and rewarding at the same time. I am happy the film will be seen by the Channel 4 audience. Hope they will be able to connect with the universal theme although portrayed through local details."

Produced by Redoan Rony for the Bangladeshi streaming platform Chorki, with co-production support from Nina Lath, Anna Katchko, and Tisha, the film forms part of Chorki's ambitious "Ministry of Love" project, comprising 12 films.

Redoan Rony, Chorki's CEO, expressed delight at Channel 4's decision and said "Channel 4 is an esteemed broadcaster. We are glad that they chose to showcase our film to their audience. Chorki always wants to make quality films and series. This is a clear sign we are moving in the right direction."

"Something Like an Autobiography" is set to be featured at the upcoming Sydney Film Festival, marking another milestone for Farooki and Tisha's collaboration.

Looking ahead, Farooki's next project, "To Hell With Love", a Hindi and English-language romance set in the UK, has garnered attention following its participation in India's Cinevesture International Film Festival's project market.

Amidst the list of films released on Eid-ul-Fitr, the first to hit international screens is the Himel Ashraf directorial film "Rajkumar", starring Shakib Khan. Following its domestic reception, the film has been screened in 75 theaters across the United States and Canada since April 19.

The film's international distribution has been handled by Swapna Scarecrow. Courtney Coffey stars opposite Shakib Khan in "Rajkumar", with additional cast members including Tariq Anam Khan, Mahiya Mahi, and many others.

This Eid-ul-Fitr, three movies featuring Sariful Razz have been released. Amongst them, the film "Omar", directed by Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Raz, is set to be released in India and abroad on April 26.

The movie will initially be screened in multiplex theatres across approximately 20 states in the United States, followed by screenings in the remaining states until May 12.

"Omar" is scheduled to release in Sweden on April 28. Additionally, starting on May 10, the movie will be showcased in several multiplexes across Canada, including Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary, and Edmonton. Bioscope Films serves as the international distributor of this movie.

Another Sariful Razz starrer Eid-ul-Fitr movie, "Deyaler Desh", directed by Mishuk Moni is set to release in Australia on May 3. The film also features Shobnom Bubly, Swagata, and many others.

Courtney Coffey expresses dismay over promotional neglect

The first poster of the film "Rajkumar" was unveiled in late March, featuring only Shakib Khan prominently. While the names of the hero, director (Himel Ashraf), and producer (Arshad Adnan) were highlighted in bold letters, the heroine's picture or name was notably absent. Viewers speculated that the hero and heroine might appear together in the next poster, but that didn't materialise either.

Subsequently, most promotional materials released on social media for the campaign needed the name of the heroine, Courtney Coffey. The American actress expressed her regret and frustration about this situation, feeling that she had been discriminated against.

Despite "Rajkumar" being released in Courtney Coffey's home country, the United States, since April 19, posters featuring only Shakib's picture and name have been displayed across various theatres and roadside locations, further exacerbating her sense of exclusion.

On her social media platform, Courtney Coffey expressed her dismay, stating, "Has anyone in the United States seen my name on the 'Rajkumar' movie posters in theatres? So far, I have not seen my name on any of the posters. If anyone comes across a poster, please send it to me. I want to proudly stand next to it and take a picture in my own country."

A few viewers of Coffey's post shared pictures of some posters from theatres in Bangladesh where her name is indeed mentioned. However, her name appears at the very bottom of the poster — in small letters. In response to this, Courtney cited the example of last year's film 'Priyotoma', where foreign actress Idhika Paul, from Calcutta, acted opposite Shakib Khan. In that case, both the actress and Shakib's names were prominently displayed in large letters on the poster.

Another viewer from New York posted a picture in the comments section, mentioning that he saw the actress' name on a poster displayed at the Jamaica Multiplex. Coffey expressed her gratitude, stating, "Thank you. I couldn't see the name because it was positioned below in very small letters. I do not know why this has been done."

1713913704239.png

Regrettably, Courtney Coffey expressed, "My name needed to be featured prominently so that other companies in the United States could consider hiring me. Additionally, the names of all the other heroines are displayed alongside Shakib's name in his other films; their names are not relegated to small, inconspicuous letters below."

Coffey had also previously expressed discontentment with the "Rajkumar" team. For instance, viewers have questioned her lip-syncing in the film's song, pointing out discrepancies. However, the actress posted a reel video on Sunday (April 21), demonstrating improved lip-syncing to the song. In response to this, Coffey commented, "I shared the video to demonstrate my capability. However, the production team opted not to use my lip-syncing skills, despite my qualifications!"

The dissatisfaction surrounding Courtney Coffey's involvement in the film extends further, as she appears in some scenes seemingly without much consideration, leading to criticism from viewers. However, the actress asserts that her portrayal was per the script. To substantiate her claim, she shared a picture of the script on Facebook as evidence.

These instances highlight Coffey's discord with the 'Rajkumar' team on various matters. However, there has been no response from the filmmaker, producer, or lead actor regarding any of these issues.

Notably, "Rajkumar" was released in hundreds of theaters across the country on April 11, coinciding with Eid-ul-Fitr, and has since emerged as the most successful film of the season. In addition to its domestic success, the film is now being screened in the USA and Canada. Furthermore, it is scheduled to be released in Australia on April 25.

Chanchal Chowdhury confessed that he couldn't fathom being offered the role of Mrinal Sen, "Nevertheless, as events unfolded, all my focus centered on bringing his character to life. It wasn't a fleeting process; day after day, I devoted myself to honing the role."

In reference to the film "Padatik", Chanchal further detailed, "I had to learn everything related to Mrinal Sen's mannerisms, speech patterns, and overall demeanour. Extensive research was imperative, and I received valuable assistance from the director throughout the process."

Despite the tragic loss of his father during the filming of "Padatik", Chanchal Chowdhury persevered. Reflecting on this difficult time, he shared, "When my father passed away, grief engulfed me. But Srijit da stepped in, telling me to focus on being Mrinal Sen in front of the camera and to remain myself off-camera."

"With this directive in mind, I continued his work with the support of Srijit Mukherji, whom I regard as a remarkable filmmaker," expressed Chanchal.

The film "Padatik" is set to be featured at the Chicago International Film Festival this upcoming July. Kunal Sen, son of the acclaimed Mrinal Sen and a Chicago resident, is set to preview the film first. A special exhibition will accompany the screening, with renowned actor Chanchal Chowdhury in attendance.

At last, when asked him if he believed he had a special knack for choosing successful films. He replied, "Success comes from deliberate action. I receive hundreds of film offers, but I'm very selective. Every decision of mine is carefully considered. After my stint in the film 'Padatik', I've been meticulous with my film choices. For an artiste, picking the right projects is crucial. That's what I believe."

Sohel Chowdhury's daughter speaks out on murder verdict

Prominent film actor Sohel Chowdhury was shot dead by some unidentified criminals at Trumps Club in Abedin Tower in Banani, on December 18, 1998.

Twenty-five years later, a Dhaka tribunal today sentenced three people, including businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, to life imprisonment in the case filed over the murder of the actor.

As the verdict was announced by Judge Arunabh Chakraborty of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2, Sohel Chowdhury's daughter Lamia Chowdhury explains her deep angst over the incident.

.....

Actors Sohel Chowdhury and Parveen Sultana Diti have two children. The eldest daughter, Lamia Chowdhury was always there for her mother after losing her father. Their son Shafayat Chowdhury completed his studies at a university in Canada and settled in Europe, after graduation. Lamia became interested in filmmaking after studying at the Toronto Film School in Canada. She returned to the country after completing her studies and currently working on an individual project produced by Azmeri Haque Badhan.

May Allah help Lamia cope with the grief of her father's murder - due to his involvement with real life villain Aziz Mohammad Bhai, who openly flouts life imprisonment sentences (he must have had a dozen of these by now) by running his companies via proxies and by living life overseas (Thailand - for those interested).

But - Allah's justice is swift and certain. I will be very surprised if AMB does not get his businesses and bank accounts seized via some Anti Corruption Commission verdict. Bigger fish are getting caught nowadays.

Aziz Mohammad Bhai is a Mafia Don. Not much can be done via Dudok. He has a strong political connection which helps him evading law enforcement agencies net. In the past, Aziz Mohammad Bhai used our film industry to whiten his black money.

Humayun Faridee: Remembering the 'actors' actor'

1717026052664.png

"Nothing in this universe is as serene, as profoundly beautiful, as death. For death is inevitable. If you are born, you must die. Remembering this truth, we would not stray into sin. To embrace the inevitable is the truest wisdom, and in it lies the deepest peace," the prodigal son of Bengal, the late Humayun Faridee once shared on death in a profound interview.

"Fearing death is a folly. The wise do not fear its approach. Embrace it, accept it, welcome it, and you will discover an extraordinary beauty in life," the artiste elaborated who left us on a spring evening 14 years ago.

Humayun Faridee, a luminary of Bangladeshi stages, screens, and television, took his final breath on February 13, 2012, in Dhaka. Yet his physical departure does not signify erasure. His creations and artistry have transcended time, rendering him immortal in the hearts of his admirers. While literal victory over death is unattainable, Faridee achieved a form of immortality through the enduring legacy of his work.

Born on May 29, 1952, in Dhaka, Faridee pursued his education in Economics at Jahangirnagar University. It was during his university years that he became involved with theatre under the tutelage of one of the brightest stars of the Bangladeshi theatre scene, Natyacharya Selim Al Deen. On stage, he delivered iconic performances in plays such as "Tritirtha", "Kittankhola", "Muntasir Fantasy", and "Keramat Mangal".

Faridee, a charismatic actor often hailed as the actor's actor and an ideal artiste, captivated many with his expressive gestures, hearty laughter, and compelling personality. His personal life stories have inspired countless individuals. His journey began on stage at the tender age of 12, performing his first play in a neighbourhood theatre in Kishoreganj in 1964.

During his school years, Faridee directed his first play, "Bhoot". By 1976, he emerged as one of the key organisers of the inaugural theatre festival at Jahangirnagar University. It was during his university days that he became affiliated with Dhaka Theatre, further showcasing his acting prowess nationwide as a member of the Bangladesh Village Theatre (Gramm Theatre). His formal journey commenced with Jahangirnagar University's inter-theatre competition, where he wrote, directed, and acted in the play "Atmastha O Hironmoyider Brittanto", which was adjudged the best amongst five competing plays.

There is a huge market for Bangla films, we need to utilise it: Goutam Ghose

1717460580550.png

Photos: Prabir Das
Bangla cinema is currently evolving, with constant experiments rejuvenating it, according to acclaimed filmmaker Goutam Ghose.

In an interview with The Daily Star during his recent visit to Dhaka, Goutam discussed the golden era of Bangla films, their present and future, the difficulties Bangla film productions face, as well as his own vision.

The director, widely known for his films like "Padma Nadir Majhi", "Antarjali Jatra", "Moner Manush", "Sankhachil", "Ma Bhumi", "Paar" and "Kaalbela", stated that the international standard of Bangla films has declined.

1717460634489.png

"Experiments in Bangla cinema are commonplace-- young directors in both Dhaka and Kolkata are trying to make new types of movies with new dimensions in form and content. However, it's not nearly as much as it used to be in the old days," said the filmmaker.

Comparing Bangla movies to the cinemas of South India and Maharashtra, Goutam opined that the latter are performing better.

"Perception used to change with new technologies, and new perception is required for new technologies. I hope that a transformation will occur in Bangla movies," the director said, stressing the need for collective efforts by both West Bengal and Bangladesh for the betterment of Bangla cinema, and diversifying its market.

"We don't know proper marketing and how to conduct business," Goutam remarked, citing this as the primary reason for Bangla films' underperformance.

"The number of Tamil-Telugu speakers is far fewer than the Bangla audience, but they invest Tk 100-200 crores in a movie, and easily get a return on their investment," said the director, adding, "Tamil-Telugu speakers all over the world watch their movies in cinema halls. Their films are being released in halls across North America, Europe, Japan, Southeast Asia, etc."

"Directors of Kerala are doing well," he said, mentioning Payal Kapadia, who won the Grand Prix award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. "On the contrary, Bangalis across the globe don't watch Bangla movies; they watch pirated versions, or prefer television and OTT platforms".

Popular Indian singers Sonu Nigam and Arijit Singh have lent their voices to the film "Padatik", starring Chanchal Chowdhury. As per reports, the song will be released tomorrow. Directed by Srijit Mukherji, the film is a biopic of the eminent subcontinental filmmaker Mrinal Sen.

Chanchal Chowdhury shared this information on his social handle, saying that the song titled "Tu Zinda Hain" will be revealed tomorrow at 10am as part of a surprise promotional campaign before the film's release.

On May 14, the teaser of the film was released which shed light on how Srijit portrays Mrinal Sen in it.

From the teaser, it can be inferred that "Padatik" depicts the story of Mrinal Sen's journey from childhood to becoming a filmmaker, including his professional and personal life. This biopic showcases how Mrinal Sen became a filmmaker and subsequently chose cinema as a medium to speak for the people — depicting their struggles, existence, and stories of survival and loss on celluloid. These stories have been acclaimed in the global cinema arena.

The shooting of the film began somewhat secretly on January 15 last year and took place in several locations, including Kolkata and Mumbai. Some scenes were also shot outside India.

Last year marked the birth centenary of Mrinal Sen and to pay tribute to him, Srijit Mukherji initiated directing "Padatik" based on the life, work, and times of the late filmmaker. Besides Chanchal Chowdhury, the film features performances by Monami Ghosh, Jeetu Kamal, and many others.

'I am sorry, please don't dwell on my past actions': Pori Moni to Mim

In 2022, Pori Moni and Bidya Sinha Mim engaged in a tug of war on social media, where Pori Moni accused Mim of trying to get close to her then-husband, Sariful Razz. The "Gunin" actress posted a series of statuses where she accused Mim of "mingling too much" with Sariful Razz and not "being satisfied with her husband."

Afterward, Mim posted a detailed status stating that she would take legal action against those attempting to tarnish her reputation. She also shared with The Daily Star that she would no longer act with Sariful Razz in movies due to the controversy. The incident led to a social media frenzy as people wondered when the mud-slinging would stop.

Fast forward to 2024, Pori Moni has divorced Sariful Razz, and it appears that all the bad blood between the two actresses is over. They publicly buried the hatchet at Dhaka Fashion Day 2024 yesterday, where Pori Moni walked down the ramp alongside other celebrities, including Bidya Sinha Mim, Sabila Nur, Puja Chery, and Tanjin Tisha.

Mim revealed to Prothom Alo what Pori Moni said to her at the event, sharing, "Two years ago, Pori Moni humiliated me with false claims on her Facebook status, that too on my birthday night. That whole incident scarred me a lot. After that incident, I tried to avoid her at public events. Prior to walking down the stage, all of us were standing behind the stage. Suddenly, Pori Moni hugged me and said she knew I was still upset with her."

"'Are you still mad at me? I am really sorry. Please forget what I said to you back then. Don't you love my children?' She further asked. I wasn't really prepared for that interaction, including her coming to me and hugging me. Many people noticed the incident, including Sabila Nur, and Tanjin Tisha, among others."

Mim said that before entering the stage and even towards the end of the program, Pori Moni kept repeating the same statements to her and hugged her twice.

When asked what she said to Pori Moni in response, Mim revealed, "I told her I really love her child, as I used to visit her house to see him. However, I decided to ask her once and for all, 'Pori, I have never wronged you. Why did you have to belittle me on social media with such lies? I was really hurt by your status at that time.'"

"After hearing that, Pori Moni replied, 'Please forget all of that. I am really sorry for everything that I have said about you. Please don't take my actions to heart.'"

Those who lack merit resort to criticism: Shakib Khan
1718406425344.png

Over the past two years, no film featuring Shakib Khan has premiered outside the Eid season. This pattern has sparked criticism, with many speculating that Shakib avoids non-Eid releases out of fear of box office failure. True to form, Shakib Khan's latest movie, "Toofan", is set to release this Eid-ul-Azha.

Directed by Raihan Rafi, the film revolves around the story of a 90s gangster. Alongside Shakib, the cast includes "Aynabaji" famed Masuma Rahman Nabila and Tollywood actress Mimi Chakraborty, with Chanchal Chowdhury making a special appearance.

To mark the film's release, the "Toofan" team held a press conference yesterday. Shakib Khan attended the event, where he discussed the film and responded to criticism regarding his decision to release movies exclusively during Eid.

The Dhallywood superstar addressed the critics, stating, "There are always people who have something to say. Now they're raising questions about why my movies aren't released outside of Eid. I've been in the industry for 25 years, and my success is well-established. I don't feel the need to prove myself anymore."

"My focus is on working for those who support me. When I returned from the US, my aim was to honour the love of those standing in line just to see me at the airport. I want to repay their loyalty by acting in high-quality films. Without quality, how can we compete? If our films aren't good enough to be shown in our country's multiplexes, let alone internationally, how can we hope to stand alongside Hollywood and Bollywood? Quality is essential for that," he added.

Shakib further remarked, "Our goal is to advance Bengali cinema without paying heed to detractors. Those who constantly find faults and try to hold Bengali cinema back fail to recognise the quality and often try to obscure it. Frankly, they lack merit themselves, which is why they resort to criticism. Support good Bengali movies, whether they are mine or someone else's, and don't listen to the naysayers."

Looking ahead, Shakib Khan revealed that his films will also be released on occasions other than Eid. He stated, "My movies will be released in the future, apart from Eid."

Shakib's upcoming film "Dorod" is set to be released independently of Eid, as per the creators, along with a few more projects in the pipeline.
